Yes, strongly dismissive. Tried it numerous times, it just doesn't sound any good. It was added to Linn speaker manuals at some point, likely by some engineer who thought it was clever but didn't bother to test it.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
I switched the single wire terminals on my Espek to tweeters instead of bass (using the single wire passive plates). The difference was very noticeable.
It seems to bring a positive and a negative. On the plus, I can best describe it as the music has left the speakers and occupied the room. On the negative, it sounds a little more raw at times. I'm not sure yet if I prefer it.
I tried replacing the plates entirely by lengths of k400 across the 3 pairs of binding posts, but that did not work at all: no sound to the mid driver.

Yes, when you remove the plates completely you also remove some connections between the last six binding posts at the back of the speaker.
If you look carefully at the passive plates you will be able to see which posts that should still be connected for passive to work.
I will take a look tomorrow.
Like Lejonklou I also find it most musically satisfying to connect the speaker cable to the bass binding posts on my Espeks.
Looking at pictures on the net it looks like the last six binding posts are connected two by two horizontally from top to bottom when using passive plates.
I have now had a look at my own plates. The above is correct. All passive plates are connected like described above.
Active plate has no connections at all.
Here is a picture clearly showing the connections under the “skin” of the plates:

My plan is now to remove the plates and make new connections with good wire.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
I'm interested in where this is going! If you guys find that aluminium foil, a single strand of K400 or something else sounds the best. Then it'll be interesting to figure out if that's the best option for most speakers or only the Espeks.

Here's a nice looking solution but it needs a bunch of Knekt speaker plugs, spades, K20/K400 and a good solder:

Here’s a couple of video’s comparing the Netgear GS108T power supply against my diy version. I’ll reveal which one is which tomorrow afternoon.

The picture from Whatsmynaim has been on my screen all along and Spannko has removed the link to his videos temporarily I think. :-)Tendaberry wrote: ↑2020-10-13 14:41 Pic missing in Whatsmynaim's post and links missing in Spannko's post...
I actually heard his first clip before he removed the link. I sounded good.

Oh, I was hoping he'd made A !
I am on my crap work laptop and monitor though - will try again later.
Mind you, they both sound good to be fair.

Looks like a total of 14 links required?

I think you are right Charlie1 in that A has a slight touch better musical timing (maybe). B has a slightly more forceful sound.
But as you say they are close.

Overall I like A better but I wouldn't mind a scoop of B mixed in.

To me A was slightly plodding along, whereas B has more tension to keep the interest going.

A sounded better to me. B I could just turn off. A got a swing! But, my headphones are not that good.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Thanks everyone.
The DIY was A and the Netgear was B.
For me, the Netgear is slightly more tuneful but the diy has the type of sound one normally associates with multi-thousand pound upgrades. The speakers disappear, the soundstage is much larger, unheard details are revealed - everything required to produce a realistic sound is enhanced. If I can get the diy to play tunes as well as the Netgear, it would make it an essential upgrade.

I made a test using speaker wire but realised that what I really like about the Espeks is tied to the bi-wire plate sound.springwood64 wrote: ↑2020-10-15 09:35That's a lot of work! I'm impressed by your dedicated pursuit of perfection. I think I will ride on your coat-tails on this one ... :)
So I connected the K20 to the bi-wire plates and only made four more connections in total to the posts right above the speaker cables.
It worked. I have now got the best sound to my liking from my Espeks using single wire K20.
Next stop will be trying out K400 split to single wire but with the enjoyment I get out of my system now it can take some time before I get there.
When comparing different plates one has to remember that it takes a lot of playing time to get them to sound right.

That's great to hear. I'm also pretty cautious about changing things now as my system is now the most enjoyable I've had

The test I did using speaker wire between the binding posts was promising. I will return to it at some point. For now speaker cable is my focus.

Here’s the latest version of my diy power supply for the GS108T network switch compared against the supplied power supply. They can be identified by the time of the recording: 22.47 & 22.50.
Enjoy!

I prefer the first clip, 22.47. I find it quite a bit easier to follow and just enjoy it more
