Need a bit of help with this, and I have the suspicion this could be a dopy question!! LOL.

Im busy ripping away my 600+ cd's to the NAS. As well as the cd's I have about 300ish LP's. Is there a way to rip them to the NAS as well?

Im using a Kisto. Would the digital out give a suitable signal when playing vinyl? Or is there an easier more obvious way?

the same question came recently on a german linn yahoogroup.
i also question this. i have now a NAS and thinking about ripping.
one way is to use the DAC in kinos/kisto digitally connected to your computer. question is, whether the digital in is good enough. i wonder what your computer will record/save if you chose the digital audio input? is this the digital stream or will there be another conversion? with kisto you can also use a higher (24/96) audio-quality.

not sure, whether the normal pc/audio-input are enough. maybe a recording device would be better. someone mentioned a korg mr1000 for example.

As you suggested, someone else has also recommended that the digital out on the Kisto would be a better way to proceed. Ill give it a try. Would also give a better quality sound compared with the above?

Hmmm... I wonder how many people are actually considering ripping their vinyl. It would surely be interesting to hear a rip from a top spec LP12 to a Linto and then to a really good ADC played back through a Klimax DS. Not sure which ADC to use or how to best configure it, though. I think the process might require quite a bit of work for each record.

If you are serious about this, I would not recommend the NAD PP-3 as it is built on the PP-2 (with a simple ADC and USB port added). And the PP-2 sounds like... well, not good.

i have made some quick tests. my lp12 is connected to a linto and the linto goes into my kisto. all connects are linn silver.

i created a record path "Phono - LtRt96", optic digital out. i used some normal optical digital cable connected it to my macbook. for recording i used CD Spin Doctor from toast7. there i choosed digital input, dvd high quality, 96k/24bit and recorded as aiff.

the result is quite good. played back via optical cable from my macbook to my kisto.

you can grab a testfile. in itunes i converted the aiff file to mp3 with 320k, the mp3 lacks some bass. the aiff is quite better.

Have you tried your rip:s on a DS-player? It is expected that it does not sound the same when played back using the MAC, but how much is lost through a DS (preferably Klimax :-)?

no not now, i only played it through my macbook.
thinking about buying some of the DS, klimax would be the ruler, but it is a bit out of reach
maybe i'll start with a sneaky, or should i jump to akurate? its a bit a question of price...

Before too long there will be a Majik DS added to the list to choose from. Thought you might want the decision muddied further.
