Opinions on Phone stages

Post by Robert Lake »

I need a Phono stage for my summer house. I am not prepared to pay so much, say €150-200. Lejounklou's products are out of the range, and very hard to find on the secondhand market.

I am wondering about Musical Fidelity V-LPS II around 1700SEK? Has someone listen to it?

An alternative is an old Linn amp such as the Intek or the (old) Majik I. I prefer an integrated amp rather than a pre-amp. I am not sure how the old Linn stands up totoday.

Robert, I think you will find the photo stages of a Linn Majik Preamp surprisingly good, either MC or MM. Get one of these and you have half your system sorted out. Sad one cannot get this model Dynamiked.

A good, inexpensive phono stage is the Fono Mini from Rega. However, I expect the original Majik I internal phono stage would be a fair bit better. Haven't done a direct comparison but a Linn LK1 preamp phono stage is significantly better than the regular Rega Fono so the Majik is likely to be up there too.

The Cambridge Audio phono stage is a cracker at about £`100
