Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I prefer A.
B starts out nice but as it goes along I notice it's lacking energy.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Yep A sounds easier to me and fun to follow.

That is a great expression Hermann.
That is something I would like my system to “communicate”. :-)

I prefer A too without knowing what others have picked

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I'm not sure. They seem very close to my ears. I enjoyed X a little more to begin with but at around 30 secs, I started to slightly prefer Y. So I'm on the fence.
I think the most enjoyable music I've heard from a CD clip and really good for digital of any kind.

Here is a second set to compare.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
That's helpful actually. I'm guessing X2 is your previous setup and Y2 is something new.
Y2 defo does the Hi-Fi stuff better and is more impactful, perhaps more compelling as well. For me, X2 might have a slight timing edge in terms of bringing the music together but personally I'd live with Y2 for a bit and then go back to X2 to check.
I think what's interesting is that they are both really good - just different.
I don't know what you're trying - is there a setting between X and Y that we could hear?

There is not an obvious “inbetween” setup but then something might turn up. :-)

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I would stick with the new (X) setup for a while then and if you're unsure after a week, try going back.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I think you've actually nailed it there with X, listening again, but would be good to know how you get on. I think Y is just more impressive, in a bad way.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I will let you know. :-)

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
for x vs y it was x for me and I didnt hat the feeling it was close between the two - x2 vs y2 is to my understanding comparing the same setups like x vs y?
I also prefer x2 over y2

Yes, that is correct. :-)

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I'm in agreement with this, x better than y and not that subtle. x2 also better than y2. I find it interesting that what I didn't like about the y clips seemed to manifest differently in the two sets. in the first set the y clip just seemed pretty blah compared to the x clip. In the 2 set the I found the y clip to be audibly offensive whereas the x clip was good. Anyway, it looks like you are headed in the right direction.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
A more uptempo track kicks in after a minute or so...
A: https://www.dropbox.com/s/daz98iqgivqnh ... 2.mp4?dl=0
B: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jr9m0igojoy3n ... 4.mp4?dl=0
You might need to adjust the volume a touch between clips but there's a reason for that.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
I prefer B.
The difference in volume threw me off at first but in the end B is more emotional so that's my pick.
Edit: By the way, how do you like the 212 so far?

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
.. bass seems a bit disjointed in both uptempo tracks - struggled to get by that - may just be Phil ;)
Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
A = VM540EB
B = VM95E
Wakonda was at the same volume setting for each recording - I wasn't sure whether to compensate for the different levels or not.
The 540 has been in the office for several weeks and I know it's got a lot better since the clips a while back. I'd hoped it would be much closer cos I like the clarity of the 540 but for me the 95 is still quite a bit more involving. Oh well - back to the Adikt or maybe Linn will have something new this year.
