Just back from vacation. I didn't read the replies to this yet. I much prefer 18. Both instruments, but particularly the violin, really pulled me in. In contrast on 19 it sounded like poorer musicians playing inferior instruments.

On these two I prefer 28. I'm hearing basically the same differences I heard on 18 and 19, where I equalized the volume on the computer while listening.

Now after reading all this it appears I picked two different DACs. I went back and listened again and I still prefer 28 to 29 even though they are close as several mentioned. Now I wonder whether the volume control used to equalize the volumes of 28 and 29 has more or less effect on the sound than the internal volume control in the old iMac I used on 18 and 19. Ah, well. Digital mysteries.

OF is Original File
ADC is Analog/Digital Converter for recording the clips
MBP is the DAC inside Macbook Pro
HP is headphones
The signal flow for the clips and playback is like:
OF > DAC1/2 > ADC > Clip1/2 > MBP > HP (A)
The signal flow for playback of the OF is like:
OF > MBP > HP (B)
So with the clips you have an additional DAC/ADC step. When with one DAC (A) and (B) are closer I would prefer this DAC.

I'm confused: what is your "ADC" in this instance? Is it DAC output played through your sig system, and recorded on your phone, or did you take the DAC output into a mic(?) input on a computer to convert back to digital?

The analog DAC output went into the line input of a Tascam digital recorder, no mics.
