Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Here is what a little torque investigation of the screws that holds the cd players lid in place did to the sound:

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
At first I preferred before, but I think you are onto something and after is easier to make sense of. I suppose I didn't find it conclusive.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
I prefer after - it makes more fun and sounds more happy driving forward. A big difference for me.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
good information - does the phaser also work for power supplies without 3poles (ie with a rasor plug/Rasiergerätestecker)Tendaberry wrote: ↑2020-03-31 16:28 I recently bought an Oehlbach Phaser, which indicates the correct phase for the appliance that you connect. I went through everything from computer, to router, switch, tv and stereo. It turned out to be a fairly big sound upgrade :-)
Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Thank you Charlie1 and Defender for listening. I understand both answers. There is something (body) from before I miss but I have gained a more distinct and precise sound. I will try something inbetween......

for me the string instrument (violin maybe) in before was a little on the annoying side

Do the Oehlbach Phaser do anything different than a regular voltage detector do?Tendaberry wrote: ↑2020-03-31 16:28 I recently bought an Oehlbach Phaser, which indicates the correct phase for the appliance that you connect. Linn has always had the same live pin going into their equipment as far as I know. A switch or router might have a different live pin that sounds best. Only way to find out is to try both.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
it works different it actually measures the error voltage/current in both directions (both phases) at the device side and highlights the lower one - what you do with the device you linked is checking where the hot pin is on the other side (at the power socket) but that doesnt tell where the device needs the phase.
Both need to come together the phase on the socket and the one where the device needs it.
Linn unfortunately didnt had it always at one pin which is in most of the countries now standardized since somewhere 2005-2007.
A Linto can have it on one side or the other same with a Lingo 1 or 2.
Tendaberry probably measured all electrical devices in the house to make sure they are wired correctly hoping for better/cleaner power delivery. I suspect he was already having his hifi system phased out correctly as that can be done by ear but how do you find out for a dishwasher, or a fridge (there is a way to measure it with a multimeter but its complicated).

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
I have ended my torque project with my cd player. The first try I found to be a little too sharp sounding and lacking a bit of body:

My second try I like more:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/hfdbr3d4d7xvn ... 1.mov?dl=0
The music is “Serenade” by Dag Wirén.

Yes, it does. I naturally also checked the Tivoli One in my bathroom, which doesn't have an earthed plug.Defender wrote: ↑2020-03-31 18:34good information - does the phaser also work for power supplies without 3poles (ie with a rasor plug/Rasiergerätestecker)Tendaberry wrote: ↑2020-03-31 16:28 I recently bought an Oehlbach Phaser, which indicates the correct phase for the appliance that you connect. Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
so your first link here is the same as „after“ with the links as some time before? If this is the case I can see what you meant with it sounding like lacking a bit of body and a little bit hot (which was not my perception when I was comparing your first clips)beck wrote: ↑2020-03-31 22:46 I have ended my torque project with my cd player. But I agree the second try has that removed. What I am not sure is if the best is in between the two or go on further than the second try.
Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
As always things get too interesting to leave so I will have to get some structure on this investigation.
A: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jmqilq1t0lpo1 ... 0.mov?dl=0
B: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hfdbr3d4d7xvn ... 1.mov?dl=0
and my latest try
C: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uh8ewrvtcsioa ... 6.mov?dl=0
C is kind of inbetween A and B.....
As I am in a hurry (sorry) here comes
D: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j59y72pja89v4 ... 8.mov?dl=0
Getting near the finish line B and D to me are ahead and fighting for the victory. But who is going to win?

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
mmh I still end up liking A so it is between A and D for me ... hard pushed to decide between the two I would say either A or D ;) ... with a tiny slight preference for D
Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Thank you Vlado and Defender for listening. I go with D and will continue my search just around the D setup. :-)

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Hard to pick between a and d. I like the warmth and tone of A but D is probably making more sense.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Hmm! There's something about A which is very good indeed, B loses a bit of the tension and crispness in comparison. D feels better than either, but I still almost, nearly but not quite prefer A.
Lovely music, though - Salonen on BIS?

Bloody hell beck! You need to write a white paper on how you’ve managed to coax so much music out of an old CD player!
It was between B & D for me too, with B winning the honours 👍👍👍

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
Thank you for all the answers. They really help as I do get what you all are talking about and why you choose like you do.
The music is taken from a compilation cd I have but I cannot see who is conducting and if it is a BIS production.
My thoughts regarding the clips:
A is very “precise”, B has an “analog” feel, C is a little confusing and D is a little dead but ok.
It is all about how tightly the lid is fitted to the body of the cd player both up/down and with the screws on either side of the player and this also has an effect on the power cable that runs by the top left back corner of the lid.
A: very tight fit
B: “loose” fit
C: screw removed in bottom left side (power cable corner)
D: between A and B
The investigation goes on but I will spare you for any more clips regarding this.
P.S. Read Spannko’s latest post in “Some observations from cd replay”. Very interesting indeed!

as beck is trying to find new torques for his cd player I am trying to optimize my Option 1 ;)
