On Qobuz there are hardly any Lovett tracks available which is a big shame.

It would be nice if they did a proper reissue on double vinyl. It’s quite a long album to squeeze on a single disk. I have no idea why they haven’t unless there were contractual issues.

That album is one of the major reasons I want to get digital back in my system. It's my favorite of Lyle's work, but you can't go wrong with, "make mine a cheeseburger."

I have a hypethesis that I've been meaning to throw out here, now further prompted by RTM's very good playlist.

It starts with a Swedish magazine named "Filter" that I read, long before I got into hifi and only rather recently recalled.

Many years ago they ran a long feature about a man named Ludvig Strigeus. From his beginning as a young computer geek to his recruitment as chief programmer for Spotify.

Now, I'm not a programmer myself so can't verify this, but the way Mr Strigeus is portrayed his dedication comes across as special, even unique within programming.

So what is his dedication? To write all code as short and effective as possible.

As far as I know he has very little interest in music per se, but what we've learned from e.g. the Hakai project is that "simple" components performing "simple" processes is ofte the best way to go from a musical point of view.

I have no clue how Tidal's and Qubus' code to piece together all the little packages that make up a stream looks compared with Spotify. But I wouldn't be surprised if they use more code performing more unneccesary operation than Spotify.

Putting the packages together in the best way may indeed be more important than the resolution of the files.

Apparently Spotify uses Ogg Vorbis for their Premium service. I read up a bit and it seems there’s folk who believe this is a better sounding music lossy format than others. I never spent much time comparing digital formats but I’m wondering if it’s even worth it to upgrade to hd.

Yeah, I saw that one earlier today. It was the final push I needed to end my Tidal subscription. More and more albums were disappearing, only to reappear as "Master" (MQA), which I don't want to support. Goodbye, Tidal.

Hi Matt!

I have now tested Qobuz and I'm slightly disappointed.

I have compared quite a few albums and tracks using Spotify and Qobuz. With Qobuz, the sound is more "clean", while with Spotify it's a little thicker and more dense. Perhaps this difference is due to Qobuz using 16/44.1 and Spotify being compressed.

But there's also another difference. With Qobuz, the musical timing is less precise than with Spotify. There's like a digital signature with Qobuz that makes sounds separate instead of coming together. The result is a lack of emotional connection. Spotify might fault in the opposite way, being more dense and pushing things together instead of separating them. But it's still easier to understand and become gripped by a completely unknown track with Spotify than with Qobuz. Likely this is due to how they deliver the data, something that we have found far more important than the actual resolution of the data being transferred.

We have compared other streaming services as well. Spotify wins over Apple Music and most of the time over Youtube Music (premium).

If there are any specific settings in the Qobuz app that I need to set, I'd be happy if you could share them and I'll give it another try.
