Single driver floorstanding speaker

Post by bonzo »

I remember one of the first times I was introduced to the Lp 12 the dealer had a pair of single driver speakers. To me it was always a great sound, can anyone comment on any current or past recommended models? Thank you

I heard Frugalhorns with Mark Audio drivers a while back. These drivers actually provide some bass and move about 8 or 10mm as I recall. The pencil design is supposed to develop even more bass AFAIR. I liked the single driver sound and they were fine on pop/rock. It was a very fast sound if you know what I mean and very lifelike with acoustic instruments. I was told the metal drivers are less fragile than the paper ones, but not quite so natural sounding.

I can’t recall comment on their musical capabilities cos they were on the end of very budget amp and streaming off the net. I was primarily interested to hear if they could even play rock/pop convincingly cos of the single driver design. I was gonna pursue further but don’t really have time at the moment. A lot of people that own them seem to have multiple pairs of speakers for different times/moods so I was also worried they wouldn’t be enough of an all rounder. Pretty cheap though even if you pay someone to assemble them.
