Musician, singer songwriter and …… novelist

Post by Arjen »

We all enjoy composers, musicians, singer songwriters. But some have more to offer than that. Like Richmond Fontaine’s and The Delines’ Willy Vlautin. He is some novelist too, Author of The Motel Life, Northline, Lean on Pete and recently The night always comes.
Any other musicians with another career to share on this forum?

There are lots of really great singers and songwriters, and it would be impossible for me to list all of them. However, some do immediately come to mind...

1) Mick Jagger and Keith Richards

2)Bob Marley

3) John Lennon and Paul McCartney

4) Neil Young

5) Joni Mitchel

6) Jerry Garcia

And this list is far from being complete, but it might get things started on this thread.

One of my favourite Brazilian singer/songwriters, Vanessa da Mata, is also a writer:

Joni Mitchell was already mentioned, she has been focusing on her painting for at least the past 20 years.

Don van Vliet (Captain Beefheart) also concentrated on painting since 1985, when he retired from the music business and moved into the Mojave desert. He has also released "Skeleton Breath, Scorpion Blush" a work containing 16 artworks, poems and song lyrics.

As a past Glasgow resident and (occasional) Monorail customer - I didn't know that!

Monorail was very close to both my office, and, more importantly, the best cup of coffee in Glasgow...

There's Ketil Bjornstad. Pianist, composer and author of novels, with a particular focus on Edvard Munch. I discovered him at a London Jazz Festival gig some years ago, performing with Kari Bremnes.

And Anthony Burgess was more than just a novelist...

I'd three cups of the delicious coffee before a business meeting. Stephen played a few tracks he thought I might like - I left with three albums. One was Alex Turner, Submarine.

Since we're in Glasgow, does Billy Connolly count as a musician, singer songwriter, author, (comedian, presenter) etc?

Neil is fading from Spotify. His albums have disappeared from his artist page, but his playlist still provides access to his songs, for now.

I suspect that Spotify will eventually tackle the challenge of disinformation on the service in a similar way to music discovery and music content labelling

Fortunately, we have most of his albums on vinyl already. Especially the albums that we really like and listen to most frequently.

I've just realised that I must also have some of his albums on vinyl! I had completely forgotten them as I had inherited them from my mother's husband (who sadly died in his late forties when I was young). I had no interest in Neil Young at the time and just filed and forgot them, but since acquiring Hakai, Radio Paradise and Spotify I have come to listen to him quite a lot.
