No need to worry. The Källa backend is programmed carefully to use the most musical methods to transfer the data from the control point to the decoder framework. Airplay 1 and 2 refer to different sets of methods and handshakes between the client and server to enable different features. Källa is optimised only for the most musical combination of options and transfer methods and cannot be labeled as ”Airplay 1” or ”Airplay 2”.
Thanks jajo,
so with Källa there is never the above mentioned compression from 16/44.1 to AAC256?
I don’t mean to sound rude in any way, but the question is really quite irrelevant when we are discussing the best way to transfer the music signal from the control point to the decoder framework.
A signal source like Källa is a very complex system where many parameters will affect the end result. The bitrate of the audio stream is important, but not in the sense that most audiophiles think (that higher is always better). Bitrate/format is just one small part of a critical chain of events where every step must be selected based on the end result - which is the enjoyment you get when listening to music.
This is the best explanation of bitrate I've seen. Montgomery is the man behind the ogg vorbis used by Spotify.
Thanks. I've used it to satisfy my curiousity and prove that my speaker frequency range is within spec. I'm also going to see if it can help me track down bass resonances in my room. I also discovered that entering 3 instead of 30 makes the page take a loooong time to respond to the 'stop' button (perhaps not surprisingly ...)
I'm now a proud owner of a new (to me) Kalla bought as an ex-demo from a dealer. I really love it so far! Just a wonderful way to listen to music, and now finally, I can just continue listening to my partners playlists, instead of turning Spotify off when I get home cause of SQ.
I do have one question that I haven't been able to find out from searching: Is there a way to make the LAN lights not flash? Sometimes I'm listening, either to the Kalla or my LP-12 in the late evening with dim lights and I prefer not to see that flashing led on my wall. If not, I'll probably cut a tiny little piece of gaffers tape and cover it up, no big deal.
My network set up is Amplifi Alien->(wifi)->Second Amplifi Alien as Mesh Node->GS108T Switch->Kalla
Kalla is on static IP, and I setup a static lease on the Alien as well.
Thanks! Yeah, I was able to find a couple of Alien routers locally on craigslist so could put together the whole thing. Just need one more switch so that my Hakai has the full setup too.
I'll either add some tape or just get used to the leds. Maybe I'll add some more color leds behind my cabinet and just add to the fun!

It seems that the Hakai is the gateway drug to Källa. What do you think of it?

I found a kit that has tinted and opaque decals of various shapes and sizes designed specifically for dimming or blocking lights and displays that are too bright (I.E. all of them...especially the LEDs on the Gigaport!). It works well. The lights are still juuuust bright enough to see with the room lights on but are unobtrusive in the dark.

I love it! It's really amazing. Wish I could afford one in both of my systems- but the Hakai does pretty well in the second system. I'm at the older end of millennial so everyone in my world uses Spotify, so that's where all my recs and everything comes from. I've avoided it for years for the lesser audio quality, but now can enjoy everything sounding excellent with the bonus of access to my friends shared playlists, and i can create and share my own too.
And as far as SQ goes, it's just so musical. I just fall into the songs and want to keep listening.

Thanks for that link! I'll look into picking some up. I was just gonna cut up some gaffers tape, but this seems a little classier!

I’m so happy to hear that you enjoy Källa, jpneat!
