Deezer or TuneIn on Hakai

Post by springwood64 »

I am considering building a Hakai. I currently listen to my Linn Axis or Sonos roughly 50/50. On the Sonos I listen to Deezer, my music library and TuneIn.

I've been researching Volumio and SnakeOil OS but can't find confirmation that Deezer is supported. Is anyone successfully using Deezer or TuneIn on either of these?

SnakeOil doesn't currently support either. However if you go down the Snakeoil route you can ask Agent_Kith to add them. He's a ludicrously helpful man.

springwood64,
I am listening to TuneIn as I'm writing. I like it for content and no stuttering or buffering issues. However, everything I've listened to on it are mediocre concerning sound quality. I use the free access; is the Premium subscription better? Is there a good sounding music station on TuneIn you can recommend?

I'm using the free service too, mostly to listen to BBC R4 or my local independent radio. It's very much background audio so I can't recommend it for musicality.

I'm intrigued by the Oz Hakai, as it is a low cost route in and can be upgraded.

I'll focus on my music library for the streamer since I can continue using Sonos for Deezer.

I've been following the various DS threads here and on the old Linn forums for years but I've never been tempted because I enjoy vinyl and the DS cost is so much greater.

So the budget of the Oz Hakai is very interesting 😀

If you use HiFi Cast as a control point you get Internet Radio built-in.

My current favourite Oz Hakai motherboard is the Intel 2500cc. When I bought it the cost was less than £20. It's gone up from what I can see but there's little sound quality difference between it and the Intel DN2800MT.

Snakeoil has Spotify Connect included.

I only use flac files.

Good luck with your journey.

On Snakeoil Agent_Kith added Bubble Upnp which supports Tidal, Qobuz and perhaps more.

Kith is ingenious. He finds a way around problems.

I've just started using HiFi Cast, having added Twonky to my existing media PC (it's a little Atom box I've had for about 10 years, on which I store all my media backed up via Livedrive).

I've been using the Sonos control point for a few years and it is really very intuitive and enjoyable to use. HiFi Cast is quite good, though the Sonos UI is neater. For some reason the Sonos app does not recognise the album art, though HiFi Cast has no problems with it.

Having said that, adding Twonky and then using HiFi Cast to control the Sonos Devices was really simple. It just worked.

The ShoutCast radio support in HiFi Cast does not seem to include BBC R4 or my local radio station unfortunately, but I'll research other options.

I trialled Tidal a while ago (though not Qobuz) but stuck with Deezer because pretty well every album I wanted to find I was able to do so on Deezer, but not on Tidal.

I assume that to benefit from Bubble Upnp on Snakeoil I need to use SO as a server. For the time being I'm using my Atom PC as a server. If the Oz Hakai works well I'll look at building an Oz Hakai Server and use SO for that.

I'll try it today and check for you. The HiFi Cast developer is a very good guy. If you ask for BBC radio stations he may help you.

I suspect that Deezer is not worth pursing at this point. They have very narrow explicit support playing over streaming solutions and have told their forum that they are not going to support UPNP.

Good news though: Both BBC and Tunein support the HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol.

Minim Radio (https://minimradio.com/) works with the MinimServer to support HLS. I'll check this out and see if I can get it working on my Atom PC.

If you have a SnakeOil OS Server you may also be able to get it to work with minimserver.

I can confirm that the combination of Bubble UpnP with MinimServer/MinimStream allows streaming of internet radio. I have it working with BBC stations and my local radio station. It's a pretty geeky set up and will break as soon as any stream provider changes the URLs of their content.

Tunein is not needed in this setup, as the audio is streamed direct from the providers.

I've got it working with HiFi Cast, Linn Kazoo and Bubble UpnP apps.

The UI on all of these apps for internet radio is a bit clunky, particularly when compared to Sonos. There's no station artwork and starting the stream can take around 30s or so with no visual feedback.

Hopefully in a week or so I'll have an Oz Hakai to play it on.

For those who want to set up BBC in MinimServer, follow the online instructions and then use these settings in place of the examples provided:
