Updated the UPMPDCLI libraries and server in Volumio.
Can run Qobuz and Tidal now, visible in Linn Kazoo.
So no need for BubbleUPnP (server) anymore.

For the people who still haven’t managed to run Volumio stable with web-ui or Volumio app, update you MPD (music player daemon) as explained at the upmpdcli website:

https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/upmpdcli/downloads.html

Bottom explanation for updating MPD for Debian.

Solved not responding web-ui for me and no more music stopping when selecting different song.

Looks like we soon can have Tidal/Qobuz integrated in next Volumio release :)

Meanwhile I have installed bubbelupnp on my Qnap to get Tidal on my raspberry/Volumio streamer.

I am making this post to help people who still didn't manage to run Volumio stable with ESI dac.
Since 2 days i've managed to run a stable Volumio build on HAKAI with ESI dac.
No more freezes, MPD crashing, UPMPDCLI crashing, stop playing when switching or adding songs, etc.

I am not sure if it is configuration and the use of server(s) and control points- dependant, but to make sure, i'll start with my configuration and my findings during the long and frustrating road to musical bliss.

What i wanted to achieve:
# Running Volumio on HAKAI *build as suggested, > USB > ESI Gigaport HD+ dac.
# Music (FLAC) located on HAKAI NAS, running Open Media Vault NAS-software, Minimserver for local music files and BubbleUpnp server for creating a Volumio-open-home-renderer to be able to stream Qobuz (and Tidal).
# Linn Kazoo control point, because i like it's simplicity and i'm used to it. (and it has Qobuz and Tidal build in)

ESI Gigaport HD+
Somehow the problems described above are all related to using this dac.
Although ESI claims the dac is fully compatible with the newest ALSA drivers in Linux, i encountered all sorts of trouble.
I was sure these were caused by ESI dac under Linux, since the RME dac i bought meanwhile, did not have any problem at all and worked from the day i plugged it in the HAKAI > FLAWLESSLY!

I could play songs or even albums fine with the ESI dac, but sometimes MPD (Music Player Daemon) crashes. Usually the crash is triggered by us; we change song, skip track, add tracks, clear playlist and so on...
When i tried to use Linn Kazoo (with BubbleUpnp server and Volumio as open-home-renderer) things got worse; 3 seconds sound, skip to next track... MPD crashes and UPMPDCLI error's in the logfile.

I was about to give up on using ESI dac and keep my RME playing, but with help from Volumio community i kept trying to get this particular configuration stable.
Here is the link to the thread i made at their forum: https://volumio.org/forum/mpd-crashes-w ... 11069.html

YES! Stable !
I was given the advice to try the current development build of Volumio. (see link above to get it)
The development build, although lower version number, has the latest Linux (Debian) Kernel(s) and most recent ALSA drivers, etc.
I made a fresh new usb install disk with this dev. build and crossed my fingers.. but no luck; still MPD crashes and hardly able to play a song.

Then i made some (quite a few actually) changes in some files and updated some parts of the build.
First: get the latest UPMPDCLI build (currently 1.3.6) https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/upmpdcli/downloads.html
Follow the instructions in this link!
(you need the Debian Jessie packages and you need to use "sudo nano" /etc/apt/sources.list.d/upmpdcli.list to add the file locations)

I made the following changes in the upmpdcli.conf.tmpl file (located in /volumio/app/plugins/audio_interface/upnp)
Remove # in the line #upnpav = 0 and change 0 to 1 (upnpav = 1)
Remove # in the line #ownqueue = 0 and change 0 to 1 (ownqueue = 1)

I added the following lines in the asound.conf file (located in /etc)
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.ctl.card 1
(use aplay -l to see which number the ESI dac is given and use the appropiate number (mine is given 1))

One thing is important:
DO NOT USE the web-ui or Volumio app to play music or configure any options.
I would suggest not to use web-ui or Volumio app at all or use it solely. Volumio doesn't like to be controlled by multilple control points (apps).

I hope this helps; mine is working perfectly now with Linn Kazoo control point and native Qobuz via BubbleUpnp server.
Need more help? Just ask!

That sounds great. I have lots of problems, and have figured out what not to do, to get stable playback.

Reading what you've done to get it stable, I'm quite lost as to what to do. Could you list a step by step method to achieve it?

I suppose sharing the end result as an installation image would be too big?

Alright, step by step guide:

1. Download http://updates.volumio.org/x86/volumio/ ... 86.img.zip
2. Create a bootable USB disk like described on the Volumio website
3. I trust that you can start this Volumio image like you did before?

On a laptop or PC other then your HAKAI:
4. When Volumio has booted, navigate to http://volumio.local/dev/ in your browser
5. Enable SSH
6. Download and install Putty https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgt ... atest.html
7. Start Putty and SSH into volumio by filling in the IP address of your HAKAI Volumio
8. Login name: volumio password: volumio
9. Type: sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/upmpdcli.list (sudo needs password: volumio)(this will open or create upmpdcli.list in an editor in Putty)
10. Copy the lines below (select and Ctrl + C)
deb http://www.lesbonscomptes.com/upmpdcli/ ... ds/debian/ jessie main
deb-src http://www.lesbonscomptes.com/upmpdcli/ ... ds/debian/ jessie main
11. Paste them into upmpdcli.list (right click mouse on cursor in putty = paste in Linux SSH)
12. Ctrl + O (to save changes) <enter> Ctrl + X (to exit editor)
12a. copy and paste (to get the public key from the keyservers)
gpg --keyserver pool.sks-keyservers.net --recv-key F8E3347256922A8AE767605B7808CE96D38B9201
12b. copy and paste (to add it to the apt keyring)
gpg --export '7808CE96D38B9201' | sudo apt-key add -
13. Type: sudo apt-get update (and wait till packeges are read)
14. Type: sudo apt-get install upmpdcli (and press Y when prompted; this will install latest upmpdcli)
15. Find your device number for the ESI dac, type: aplay -l (remember the number ESI is given)
15. Type: sudo nano /etc/asound.conf (this will open asound.conf an editor in Putty)
16. Copy and paste:
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.ctl.card 1
(Change number to the one listed in aplay -l)
17. Ctrl + O (to save changes) <enter> Ctrl + X (to exit editor)
18. Type: sudo nano /volumio/app/plugins/audio_interface/upnp/upmpdcli.conf.tmpl (this will open upmpdcli.conf.tmpl in an editor in Putty)
19. Navigate with Arrow keys to:
#upnpav = 0 (remove # and change 0 to 1 (upnpav = 1)
#ownqueue = 0 (remove # and change 0 to 1 (ownqueue = 1)
20. Ctrl + O (to save changes) <enter> Ctrl + X (to exit editor)
21. Type: reboot (to reboot volumio)

All should work now in Linn Kazoo

Thanks for that Sopper, the problems you had previously experienced with kazoo is similar to problems I've heard from other people and the one thing they had in common was they all had iPhones. In Android, kazoo isn't really an issue

I am installing mine today and tried to follow the steps.. two usb sticks, one "burned" and one with the image file etc. At one of the very first steps, alt-shift-f1, the system just hanged. Odd. I restarted a few times, then avoided that and used the mouse to look around. In one menu I found

"Install on drive"...

Very weird... their instructions specifically say that there is no such thing. Fine, I clicked it, selected my Intel and it gave no errors during the process. When done, I removed both usb sticks and restarted from ssd! Confusing but at least in a good way... hey...!

After trying both the ethernet connectors it now gets network.

Should I add my NAS in it's settings?
I never did for the Linn DS so I don't think so. I want to use an app BubbleDS (or Kazoo as soon as the Android version stops crashing), linking music files on a selected nas to a selected renderer. Right?

(Although so far it does not show up as a "renderer" in BubbleDS.)

Adding a network disk in web-ui or Volumio app, just makes the music available in the web-ui or app. It has no purpose if you will use different control point.
I reckon you’re running a media server on your NAS? Like Twonky, minimserver, asset server, etc.

Your control point (Kazoo or Lumin or BubbleUpnp, etc) works like Linn streamers; select Volumio as renderer and select NAS media server and play music..

Thank you for the very clear answer, Sopper!

(Yes, NAS QNAP TS-109 running Twonky.)

Probably it was some temporary glitch, now I can select between the DSi and the HAKAI in the app BubbleDS! And it plays!

Just yesterday I thought the DSi was kind of highend hifi. Today it sounds.. different. What happened?! :)

There's a new version on the website. It has Qobuz and Tidal natively. This should have the newest kernel?

No it’s based on older kernel
I have not been able to get it stable, but that might be my setup and configuration demands

And I was not able to use Linn Kazoo for streaming Qobuz in this “native” version, only when using web-ui or Volumio app.

Hi Sopper, thanks for the guidance. For my understanding: is this write down meant for solving issues on IoS devices running Kazoo? I downgraded from the July release to this April release applying your manual, but no luck with Kazoo on my iPad so far.
