Thank you for setting up an English forum with a good user interface.

Just a humble suggestion, what about a new section where we can discuss our favourite records/movies.

Moved your post. / jajo

Well, thanks for coming here and for your suggestion!

A guiding star when designing this forum was to keep things simple. Everything that didn't feel absolutely necessary had to go.

Music and movies was one of those things that was discussed several times. The conclusion was that music could fit under "Me and My System", since the musical discussions among hifi enthusiasts - in my experience - are more of a "I recommend this"-nature than lengthy debates. And it seems someone has already started a topic of a "What I'm listening to"-nature in that forum...

I think there are better forums on the net for discussing movies. It's not like people using the Tune Method have any particular taste that would make our movie (or music for that matter) recommendations more valuable than anyone elses. Or do you think otherwise?

Ohh...yes I can see the text "my music" in the header to that section.
Missed that.
No worries.

If you want to add a picture to your message, you write:

The displayed size is restricted, to make the forum easily readible. But if you click on the picture, it will open in a new window. There you can see it in its original size. Sometimes it might need a click to regain full size because your browser has scaled it down to fit the window.

This is an example:

I'm having a little, but slightly disturbing problem with the forum nowadays. When I log in, my username pops up as Registered User but all subjects including the ones with unread posts are marked with a single box. In the menu list it still says "Log in to check your private messages" and "Log in". When I log in for a second time the menu list changes to "You have no new messages" and "Log out (Pediatrik), but unread posts are still marked with one box.

PS The webbrowser I use is Safari. DS

Thanks for reporting, I will look into this and see if it can be fixed!

My problem is probably browser-dependent. I'm now back at work after two weeks of parental leave of absence and at work (PC, Internet Explorer) everything works perfect when I log in. Yesterday I tried to log in from my computer at home (MacBook Pro, Safari) and the problem reoccured. I guess that I need to change some settings in Safari.

Anybody out there who knows wich settings I should change?

I think you are correct in the assumption that it's browser-dependent.

Jajo has been looking at faults that appear with various browsers, but I am not sure he has figured this one out yet.

Pediatrik,

we have tried to duplicate your problem, but without success. I therefore suspect it has to do with that specific browser on that computer. Have you tried resetting Safari? That might do the trick.

I am using Safari on a G4 PowerMac and I don't have that problem. We also have two iMac G4s at work and they function properly on the forum in this regard.

I do have another question, however. I have noticed that the "sticky" threads are always marked with a single box whether there are new items or not. It isn't a big problem as when I see double boxes on a forum heading and then don't see any when I'm inside that forum I just look inside the sticky ones. But it was a bit confusing at first, and still is at times unitl I remember how it works.

Thanks for pointing that out, Thomas.
Actually there are two "new message" indicators, colour and number of boxes:

New message: 2 green boxes.
No new message: 1 grey box.

New message in a sticky thread: 1 green tilted box.
No new message in a sticky thread: 1 grey tilted box.

This wasn't exactly intentional, so I'll change it to something more logical.

Edit: Done! Now always 2 green boxes when there are new messages.

Since there have been between 5 and 10 new spam members each day for the last couple of weeks, membership now requires manual approval by the administration.

The only difference is that new members might have to wait a day or two for their membership instead of activating it themselves.

We now have 99 members and over 1000 posted messages. Looking through them just now I must say there is plenty of sound advice and valuable information in those messages.

Thank you, everyone!

One of the few things that surprised me is that nobody reacted on Thomas' proposal to discuss LP12 setup issues. I would have expected that to be popular, but perhaps those who play vinyl rely on their retailers and don't fiddle much themselves with their turntable.

Now who is going to be member number 100?

That's probably a very good observation Fred - I was dealer trained in LP12 setup, although several years ago, but never touch my turntable. I prefer to leave it to a dealer who has more recent practice, although I don't have a gig or speed-disc/strobe anymore, which limits things. Apart from the occasional clean of the belt and stylus (green stuff and AT vibrating pad cleaner) I never feel a need to tweak.

For sale and Wanted

We are currently looking into adding a For Sale and Wanted section to the forum. Several members have asked for this during the last few months. A common reason behind the requests has been that it would be nice to be able to buy from and sell to a fellow enthusiast.

The reason it has not been implemented yet is that I don't want this place to be cluttered with too many forum sections or subforums. It needs to look good and tidy! As soon as we have found an acceptable solution, the new forum sections will be added.

If anyone feels strongly against this addition, please do share your thoughts here!

I'd like to welcome Chris Morton who just turned our membership count to 150!

Over 2000 messages have been written during the first year of this forum, with a vanishingly low count of nonsense, agression and personal attacks. I find that impressive.

Thankfully there is some debate and controversy. Otherwise I think we'd be bored and go elsewhere. But the daily hits on this forum continue to rise with more than 5% each month. About 350 people visit this forum on a weekday.

Figures apart, I'd like to thank you for making this a quality forum that I enjoy visiting every day!

Current statistics: 181 members and 3754 messages posted. In common with other specialist forums, there is a minority who does most of the posting: 52 people have posted 10 messages or more and 29 have posted 20 or more.

When Linn opened their own web forum, the number of daily visits here fell by almost 20%. But since August the numbers are rising again! There is now around 300 people checking the forum every day.

Judging from comments I have been getting, the most positive aspect of this forum is that the quality level is consistently high. People have reported how they have gotten excellent answers to questions they haven't found straight answers to anywhere else.

Sometimes the quality level also appears to be the most discouraging aspect: Some emails I get start with "I don't want to ask this on the forum 'cause I really don't know much about these things..."

Please let me point out that questions are just as important as answers and that there are NO stupid questions! If you think about it, sometimes it's the most basic questions that generate the best discussions.

To all of you: Many thanks for your contributions, however big or small they might be!
I have learned a lot in here since this forum opened up one and a half years ago.

Thanks, The Management
...but when I follow the link (or come directly into the PM page) there's nothing there (no messages at all)!

Any idea what's going on?

We were spammed by the latest registered member; robinbanks64@yahoo.com

Not only did he post in the HiFi forum, but he also pm:ed individual members. I deleted his account along with the outbox. Therefore you were notified, but the message is already deleted.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Splendid news: We have just reached an all time high of more than 400 individual daily visits to this forum on weekdays! It's quite impressive to see the statistical curves continuing up.

We are currently 195 registered members, having posted 4287 articles.

Thank you all for making this such a great forum!

That's great to hear. I have to say that I find the trend on the Linn forums to be a bit disappointing. I think it shows the value of maintaining a site where the Tune method is the standard for evaluation as the discussions here are generally more useful where those on the Linn forum seem to be going all over the place.

I know several others have mentioned the same feeling to me and I believe it is the main reason for the continued interest in this unique forum.

Welcome to our latest member GiantSteps, who just turned the membership count to 200!

November showed a continual rise in individual daily visits and ended up as a new all time high.

Thanks everyone!

These last weeks it's been rather quiet in here. Clearly visible on the statistics, too, with a drop in daily visits from the all time high of late last year. I'm not sure exactly why, but I've seen a similar trend in other forums. I feel confident the activity will rise once again.

The thread of Absolute Bargains has also been quiet for a long time now. Maybe the financial climate could help boosting interest in that part? Enjoyable music to a minimal cost is something that have always interested me.

218 members and approaching 4900 messages. Thanks for your all your contributions to this excellent forum!

We just passed 6000 messages and the membership is at 252, not bad at all. Like on other HiFi forums, it's a minority who is really active. 73 members have posted at least ten messages and only 36 have posted 25 or more.

The number of individual daily visits took a dive when Linn launched their own forum but soon after the numbers started rising again. Now it seems to have levelled out at around 300 people a day.

Thanks for your valued input on the wonderfully interesting subject of HiFi and music! I am looking forward to an exciting autumn.
