Re: Random thoughts on hifi

Lego,

I’m struggling to remember if the machines were adjusted for the tape being used tbh. It was a long time ago! Did the machines have auto biasing? I can’t remember.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Brand new Linn Blacks from eBay? I would inspect the joints. It's easy to tell if they're originals or something else. In my experience, it's very rare for original Blacks to "go bad" (like some old Silvers have, for unknown reasons). Interesting theory that I hadn’t contemplated. Here’s a picture ...

Interconnects - original or not?

This is the solder “bridge” I was referring to. All factory assembled cables and some dealer/diy cables will have this bridge.

Re: Amateur Hour

Hold your horses guys! The one on the left could be a factory made lead. You are 100% incorrect . It’s hard to tell from the photo, but the left one looks like the sloppy soldering is actually a technique Linn use to form a better connection between the barrel and the cable clip/earth point. There ...

5-0. Probably don’t need to keep it blind much longer. discodave may indeed have a point regarding the windows - I do have a history of posting inconclusive clips, though this set actually appears to have resulted in consensus. 1 is an approx 8 year old and well used QED interconnect. Cost somethin...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Thanks chaps. The result is: 100% of those who expressed an opinion preferred the DIY power supply* (* Sample size of 3) So there you have it, “research” proves that the DIY is better than the Netgear power supply. If it’s good enough for shampoo manufacturers, it’s good enough for me! Well, not rea...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Here’s the latest version of my diy power supply for the GS108T network switch compared against the supplied power supply. They can be identified by the time of the recording: 22.47 & 22.50. Enjoy! https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B125oqs3qHvgqNB PS. The identities will be revealed in 24 hours

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Thanks everyone. The DIY was A and the Netgear was B. For me, the Netgear is slightly more tuneful but the diy has the type of sound one normally associates with multi-thousand pound upgrades. The speakers disappear, the soundstage is much larger, unheard details are revealed - everything required t...

Re: Absolute Bargains!

I second your recommendation for the new baby Rega amp although I’ve only heard the £1000 “System in a Box” at the Bristol HiFi show where I thought that it was one of the highlights of the show. Musically, I thought that it was probably better than anything else I heard that day (off the top of my ...

Spannko, would you do me the honor of a reply? My $80 is ready to spend if your allegation is correct. My pocket book likes evidence, I didn’t realise you asked me a question! How can I help? Would you be so kind as to provide a link to the Melco/Buffalo forum comments you cited? Here’s an alleged ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I like Ringo's drumming on Beatles LPs, especially the earlier ones where his timing is great to my ears. I guess he wasn't the most technically proficient though. A reporter once asked John Lennon if Ringo was the best drummer in the world. “He’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles!” came bac...

In the case of the Melco, even the board model number (which Melco photoshopped out of their marketing shots!) is identical to a Buffalo switch which sells for about £80 Spannko, would you do me the honor of a reply? There are other solutions than disconnecting the network. The power is within the software. Watch this space. No further comments, your honor. Let’s not forget that the power is also in the power supply. Watch this space! Also, there’s a thread on the Naim forum which is becoming very interesting. ...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

I’ve compared the Walkman Pro to a Dragon and the Revox cassette deck. The Revox had a very precise and accurate sound, neutral and pure - very Germanic. The Nakamichi sounded less stable and not as well defined, in comparison to the Revox. The Sony’s sound was even less well defined than the Nakami...

Thanks Don,I was wondering why Spannko put up an explanation where it was the server issuing the IP addresses rather than the router . Did I ? Oops! I didn’t even notice tbh! However, a “DHCP server” is a piece of software which can be installed in a computer, nas, router etc. Here’s a bit of info ...
