Re: What causes high capacity in MM?
Ah, right, thanks for correcting me. Had a look back at the Naim forum and this is what I was thinking of, "The RIAA EQ of the Nait one was replicated in the new circuit." and "I copied the 0.15dB 40Hz bump in the RIAA frequency response from the Nait 1 to give it the same character. Technically thi...

Re: Record player for daughter
Nice system. I think it's important that she listens to vinyl again. Just the way she should like it. And it probably does. Thanks Hermann. Agree, it has to be what works for them. Just a recommendation to be careful when putting a turntable on top of an amplifier. The transformer used in most of t...

Re: Record player for daughter
Hijacking your thread somewhat but my youngest wanted a record player again. They go through these phases so glad I've hung onto the P2. This is her second attempt but she's a bit older now(13) so let's see. £150 Arcam Delta 60 warming up OK- I knew a 4140 wouldn't be deep enough... https://www.drop...

Re: What causes high capacity in MM?
It certainly works well with vintage Naim and also the Nait 50 but I think Naim replicated older phono settings in the 50.

I wonder if he's mainly concerned that it's still under family ownership and doing pretty well.
Perhaps focus on the tune is simply a 'nice to have'.
Would be interesting to find out wouldn't it.

Re: Good sounding vintage gear - examples
I should really recycle some of my gear, but have a very strong attachment to some units. My first Creek was a 4040 from 1984 but it unfortunately lost one channel in 2015 or so and have since relied on the 93' 4041 S2. The Rega P3 ( again 1984) is a work of art in my opinion and will stay in the l...

Re: Good sounding vintage gear - examples
I have had a Creek 4140 S2 since 1993 and it has been a great little stand in for my Tundra Monos when they have gone for upgrades. I think they would struggle to replace the amazing TM3s but certainly made a good fist of replacing TM 1 and TM 2. I like the way you've hung onto stuff. Plenty of gea...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
I think it's been said that speakers are The most personal choice within a system especially since they have to look good, have waf, work in the room, And be to your musical taste. I don't know that others have expressed it to the point that they can't bear anything but (almost) one brand, but that...

Re: Hermanns System
The only one I didn't like was D2 as the tempo seemed hurried.
Couldn't really get anything from the first track though.
Take Five was more even for me with perhaps a slight preference for E.

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Thing with your example is you’re changing 2 things - a better example is either system & just change the speakers… Not really cos I'm trying to convey a point that (for me) source first wouldn't outweigh the influence of (most) non-Linn speakers. I get what you’re saying but ultimately bad speaker...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
How so? You asked about a system with a level of engagement from all components over one compromised with an unengaging component, particularly uncommunicative/unmusical speakers… Not that a higher system budget &/or higher component price necessarily leads to increased engagement, but I’d argue th...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Just use a pair of the 3-4 other speaker models then 🤪 If you can’t afford a nice musical pair of speakers from the 10%, balance your budget a bit better, but do so between amps & speakers rather than Monos and lesser source… but you knew that, right 😋 Not really the point I was trying to make but ...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
How do you determine that it’s a fabulously musical source and that they are terrifically engaging amps if you’re using uncommunicative/unmusical speakers? 🤨 Like I said, assume the system was engaging with 3-4 other speaker models. Besides, I would hope there is consensus on this forum that Kalla,...

Re: Good sounding vintage gear - examples
Great thread Rutger and an enjoyable read! Can't comment on CD. The only time I ever truly enjoyed CD (in person) was an Akurate CD player shortly before Linn pulled the plug - I enjoyed that more than the CD12. Wouldn't mind an ACD with a Utopik and NOS laser. If beck could do his magic as well the...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Im only talking of the perceived pitch of a guitar. Good musicians use tuned guitars on their recordings. If one source can give the perceived listening impression of a more tuned guitar, then the articulation in the lower end of the sound where the fundamental rythm elements are, will also be more...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Are speakers unengaging or showing how unengaging the source is .Again it's all speculation, and probably something that can't be demonstrated . I can understand a better pair of speakers revealing an annoyance from the source/amp that other (possibly cheaper) pairs have covered up - I think that's ...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
I have a question - do you prefer a guitar thats carefully tuned or a guitar slightly out of tune ? Which one of those two guitars will give you more enjoyment ? This is what Source first is for me - the source that gives a more accurate perceived pitch from the recorded instruments when playing mu...

Hmmm. I might be able to compare Källa>boazu>'cheap no name speakers in untuned position' with Hakai>boazu>Espeks in a month or so.... I think where this applies for me is when the speakers are unengaging. Cheap with no name and no setup doesn't guarantee that. Are speakers unengaging or showing ho...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Yeah, source first was best. Here's a hypothetical system for you since I haven't done a real world comparison. 1. Klimax LP12 > Sagatun Monos > Tundra Monos > Inexpressive speakers that don't let the music through very well 2. Selekt LP12 > Boazu > Majik 109s I think I'd pick system 2. I'm sure on...
