HAKAI build for n00bs - lessons learned

Having just completed my build of a hakai and matching hakai nas I thought I'd try to summarize the process while fresh in my mind. It may serve as inspiration to others doubting whether or not they dare commit to a build. I have close to zero previous experience from computer builds or programming....

Re: HAKAI NAS

Yes, I meant the last line - it actually works now. The final step was embarrassingly basic; I juste needed to reboot the nas after I’d loaded music onto it. Minimserver default is to rescan the library when it is started, including after a reboot. That's almost certainly what got it working after ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Which one do you prefer? /Kallesprätt Clip 1. To me it’s more direct, easier to follow the bass, the trumpet and the inimitable sound of his female backup singers. Not sure what it is about those backup arrangements... he must have used many different singers through the years but the sound is so e...

Well, for one he has gone from Akito1 arm to EkosSE! :-)
Well spotted!

More clips tomorrow ;)
A for me too. Tighter and more coherent.

Is your system described somewhere?

Re: Oscar's system and first world problems

I’m gonna have to update the system description.

This “Dual Stereo” digital front end started playing music tonight.

I should get some sleep... more impressions in the coming days.

Am I nearly there, you may wonder? I’ve successfully formatted the SSD to NTFS and mounted it in Snakeoil as /dev/sdb5 on /media/music/sdb5 I’ve changed the windows settings such that now both Hakai and Hakainas appear in the network on my windows pc. Re: Everything louder than everything else?

Volume while recording clips or doing setup comparisons at home - how do you choose? While most components of the Hi-Fi hopefully behave largely the same over a range of volumes, I guess most find that speakers don’t entirely and rooms most certainly don’t. Can an A-B comparison give different resu...

Re: HAKAI NAS

The SATA-to-USB cable will be with me tomorrow. A little bit unlucky as I would have had time to tinker with it tonight, but then again only a slight delay to a project which is proving a great learning experience and which couldn't be expected to be plug and play anyway. I will indeed need to figur...

Re: HAKAI NAS

Thanks for the link FPM! There do appear to be a few different solutions in that tread, including enabling SMBv1 which isn’t recommended by Microsoft. Do you know what is required by Snakeoil? I’d rather not change more in windows than necessary so if one of the other workarounds will do the trick I...

Hello - making good progress with my system. Hakai and hakainas are up and running on the network, seemingly recognized by each other as well as Kazoo where I can play radio through the Hakai and see the hakainas as a music server. I’m running SnakeoilOS so have the Hakai set to upmpdicli Player and...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

This is a phenomenon I've encountered more and more as I dial in my own system. I find myself enjoying music I would have otherwise rejected because apparently it didn't make sense to me. This is precisely what I was missing, and seeking, when I discovered and adopted the Tune Method. This is spot ...

I have always defended Bob Dylan against unfair and faulty accusations of being a bad singer. :-) Just a quick question: Is your equipment connected to a proper earth? It does make a big difference. As good as it gets. It’s a power strip with ground connected with a grounded mains connector. At fir...

Re: Status in the world of hifi

Steely Dan is a prime example of the ‘original reproduction paradox’ - with the multiple takes employed in recording their music essentially didn’t exist until it hit the mastering table.

So is there even a performance to reproduce?
