What’s Slam Got To Do With It?

…. It’s nothing but a second hand artefact. Oftentimes in life, we have to be careful what we wish for. This is particularly so within the realm of high fidelity, or audiophilia. Ever since Linn introduced the Isobarik’s with their ability to produce prodigious amounts of super tight bass, particula...

Re: Pete's System

Fantastic Pete! Linn Records would often use Espek’s to monitor their recordings in preference to any other speaker, so you’ve got a great system there. Enjoy!

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

I've never designed or built a loudspeaker in my life, but I do know that any material will damp resonances at some frequencies. It's also pretty well known that symmetry is not a must for speaker cabinets for performace reasons, they are done more for cost reasons. This makes me thing that experim...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

What happens if you have a tunefork resonanse from the cabinet exactly at the frequency of a musical tone ? Remember you can always build a stiff, high Q resonating cabinet without tunefork effects if you use different thickness on every opposite wall in the speaker, also the sidewalls . This will ...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

Maybe there is also an inverse relation between dimensions and musicality? Possibly. I’ve a feeling that each additional kg, regardless of its role or purpose, reduces musicality due to the time it takes for vibrations to decay, thus smearing transients. However, increasing the size of the enclosur...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

On the subject of lower mass cabinets, I've heard quite a few open baffle designs (with conventional drivers, not referring here to electrostatics) - essentially as low mass as practically possible. I haven't found any of them to be musical - although most were DIY designs, but that's not an automa...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

This week I’m building an enclosure of approximately 600 x 250 x 250 which weighs about the same as the original Kans. Maybe there is also an inverse relation between dimensions and musicality? Possibly. I’ve a feeling that each additional kg, regardless of its role or purpose, reduces musicality d...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

Another factor in what possibly makes a loudspeaker more musical is a lower enclosure mass. This flies in the face of conventional audiophile wisdom which suggests that the best enclosures are heavy and rigidly braced. However, to date, everything I’ve done to eliminate enclosure resonances, which i...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

Imagine also having a bespoke design built only to work in your room, given the room is part of the acoustic system. Very expensive, I imagine! That’s an interesting idea! It also raises the question, how would the design process differ from any other loudspeaker designed to play tunes harmoniously?

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

Yes I have - always prefered the lowest resistance coils ( ie 1.6 mm ). Did you try anything even larger? 3mm² for instance? No OK. Then it’s quite possible that, for your particular application, 3mm² could be less musical than 1.6mm² even though its resistance would be lower. This is something I’v...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

True, but even If one uses a thick wire coil with very low resistance of, maybe 0.3 ohms its still more than 0 ohms that you get from a directly coupled amplifier. Using a thin wire coil can make the series resistance as high as 1 ohm . Have you tried listening for the effect of coil resistance on ...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

The coil in series with the bass driver always has some resistance, enough to make the amplifier connection to the driver worse at low frequencies where they are needed the most . This is where active crossovers has their biggest advantage because of the directly coupled power amplifier. These are ...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

Its true though that a passive crossover are more intertwined with the driveunits in a passive speaker, but not in a good way. It looses the direct amplifier connection with passive components that can only do damping of the energy coming to the drivers. It makes the amplifier loose the control of ...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

I guess it comes down with how music works. Its ordered frequencies in the time domain. Less order, worse sound. If energy is lost somewhere in the system it cant be recovered later in the chain. If one hifi system makes you tap your feet more than another - its a better system and most probably mo...

I had it some time ago. Linn Axis or Digital with K400 in 2.48m length on Keilidh/Tukan with Naim 72/140. In fact, I couldn't hear any difference. However, this was before the Keilidh crossovers got new capacitors, which gave the speakers a significant boost. In the next few days I'll be making two...
