Re: The meaning of Source First
In the 1900's, it was normal with source first systems if you had limited funding. Ivor understood the importance of pushing dealers using source first and single speaker demonstrations. I presume that didn't go as far as non-Linn amps and speakers though, or would he have advocated lower cost NAD/...

Re: Do we really want a full understanding of music from our hi-fi?
There were a couple of albums i bought in the 80,s that even though I upgraded they didnt seem to improve in sound or musicality.I think it was Kid Creole and the coconuts and ABC lexicon of love!?.It was as if there were was no more information on the record to retrieve I too recall a small number...

Re: The meaning of Source First
Trying to look at it from Sunbeams perspective. What I would like to know is how sustainable long term is a front end first 'by all means necessary'.I have a slight suspicion if I sold my kairn aktive klouts ninkas and upgraded my deck to top spec LP12 and kept my intek and kans I'd initially be lovi...

I very rarely listen to my all time favourite albums ,Astral Weeks ,Hejira ,Kind of Blue etc , because I get it perhaps ? Astral Weeks is one of mine too and, like you, I rarely play it. Imagine watching a a really good entertaining film, which makes you laugh cry etc. a real rollercoaster. You follo...

Re: Do we really want a full understanding of music from our hi-fi?
I think I see a pattern here. Easy to digest: we hear it over and over again. Harder to digest demanding more of us when listening: we hear it seldomly. I think there is some truth in that Beck, especially on the movie side. Mr Tumble's great! My favourite is Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom - Nanny ...

Re: Do we really want a full understanding of music from our hi-fi?
Thanks for raising some really interesting points Thomas,I can relate to all of them .I recently asked Ivor on Fb about information retrieval from vinyl and he seemed to think that on the lows quite a lot but not so much on the highs ..I'll have a look for his exact words. On returning to a concert ...

Re: Do we really want a full understanding of music from our hi-fi?
Because it makes more sense? I agree that my sense of understanding can sometimes make drastic jumps after an upgrade. I still remember when I suddenly understood that a certain song could be ironic and not just happy - it was not in the words or the singing but how the playing of the instruments w...

Re: Do we really want a full understanding of music from our hi-fi?
I think there are many reasons to listen to music yes, for sure! Sorry, did I made it even more confusing now? I think what I'm really asking is why is it we have no qualms in listening to the same album night after night for say a week but we, well me anyway, might struggle to go to the same gig n...

Re: Do we really want a full understanding of music from our hi-fi?
Bear with me on this one guys. I've just finished reading ML's explanation of tune dem etc citing better understanding of the music as the reason to upgrade and tweak etc. Taking this to the extreme I'm not sure this is something I would necessarily desire. No, that was not what I wrote. This is: T...

Re: Do we really want a full understanding of music from our hi-fi?
So, are you suggesting that if HiFi gets too good then we won't want to keep listening to the same album cos it will have nothing else to offer us? And we'll never get any Eureka moments having listened to a 'grower' a dozen times previously
Yes that's what I'm suggesting because w...

'I'm not sure what this 'musical understanding' term actually means other than as an evaluation technique. I'm a bit confused by it all for anything else than that.'
I probably mean communication Charlie which is a form of understanding

Re: Do we really want a full understanding of music from our hi-fi?
The best we can do with hifi is to get the puzzle of sounds right. Then we end up with a 10 percent representation of the real thing (or less). I agree Beck it's the master tape that's in the way ..Hi-fi is never going beyond the master .So what is it in the the real thing we are not getting that's...

I didn't think much of u2 until i heard them played in a nightclub in Dublin ..Then I got it :o)Charlie1 wrote:Oh, and similar to your Rachmaninoff example but not nearly as classy, I always thought 'Vertigo' by U2 was drivel until I heard it live. I still don't think that much of the studio recording though.

Re: Factors effecting low volume playback
Ref 3020, I occasionally hanker for a cheaper and even simpler system where I might forget about the Hi-Fi ladder (probably delusional). Just a budget integrated, Majik LP12 and small stand mount speakers. Just two boxes (if the amp can fit a phono card). Mind you, a Kore would be nice too. See, I'...

Lego, please explain what you mean by 'risky'. And which accusation? That it's all about money or that it's a scam to resell music that is already available in your own secret proprietary format? I'd also appreciate if you could share your thoughts on what is positive or even excusable about the MQ...
Re: MQA
The only thing MQA are trying is to get rich. If there was any musical merit to their methods they would have demonstrated it. Which they have consistently refused (and deliberately wasted my time on several occasions). Such a blatant scam. Jings Almighty Fred!!!.Very strong accusation is that wise...

Re: Factors effecting low volume playback
This post brings back great memories of listening late at night with a NAD 3020 which had a button for late night listening ,not sure if it was the loudness button (which boosted bass and treble)or mute button i used which reduced volume if you wanted to answer the phone etc ,enabling you to turn vo...
Re: MQA
I could be wrong but i always presumed the master was what the artist recorded to tape which was then mixed on the desk(boom tizz) to give what we have on our stereos .I think the original recording is the illusion mqa is trying to create, well to these ears anyway :0)

Re: MQA
I have been listening to mqa albums on and off since the start of the year and I must admit it does have that boring old master tape sound to it.Not what I was expecting, less boom tizz compared to Tidals normal streams.I'm holding judgement. All recorded music is tweaked anyway and its all just an i...
