Re: Good sounding vintage gear - examples
Great thread Rutger and an enjoyable read! Can't comment on CD. The only time I ever truly enjoyed CD (in person) was an Akurate CD player shortly before Linn pulled the plug - I enjoyed that more than the CD12. Wouldn't mind an ACD with a Utopik and NOS laser. If beck could do his magic as well the...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Im only talking of the perceived pitch of a guitar. Good musicians use tuned guitars on their recordings. If one source can give the perceived listening impression of a more tuned guitar, then the articulation in the lower end of the sound where the fundamental rythm elements are, will also be more...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Are speakers unengaging or showing how unengaging the source is .Again it's all speculation, and probably something that can't be demonstrated . I can understand a better pair of speakers revealing an annoyance from the source/amp that other (possibly cheaper) pairs have covered up - I think that's ...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
I have a question - do you prefer a guitar thats carefully tuned or a guitar slightly out of tune ? Which one of those two guitars will give you more enjoyment ? This is what Source first is for me - the source that gives a more accurate perceived pitch from the recorded instruments when playing mu...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Hmmm. I might be able to compare Källa>boazu>'cheap no name speakers in untuned position' with Hakai>boazu>Espeks in a month or so.... I think where this applies for me is when the speakers are unengaging. Cheap with no name and no setup doesn't guarantee that. Are speakers unengaging or showing ho...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Yeah, source first was best. Here's a hypothetical system for you since I haven't done a real world comparison. 1. Klimax LP12 > Sagatun Monos > Tundra Monos > Inexpressive speakers that don't let the music through very well 2. Selekt LP12 > Boazu > Majik 109s I think I'd pick system 2. I'm sure on...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Yeah, I definitely did some other comparisons but using the LP12 in both setups. Can't recall what I did now. Might have involved a KK1 and Kikkin plus other changes but really don't remember - it was in our old house so 13+ years ago.

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Give that man a memory badge! - if such a thing exists But that technics midi system did actually play music. In fact, the CD section was probably the weakest link. I still use it for burning in and leave it running in the office and don't mind it to be honest. For those that don't recall, I compare...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
Fair enough Leo. Not sure a point of reference is needed. For example, if several speakers are all musically enjoyable and one comes along that leaves you flat then I don't see why the source is at fault. This is of course assuming they are all functioning well and time has been taken to set them up...

Re: Pre-amplifiers/streamers for my newly acquired Tundra 2.2 Tarandus.
HAS ANYONE TRIED THE LATEST VERSION AKURATE KONTROL? (i believe it looks just like an adsm/3) Just checking but I'm sure you know Linn ceased production of all pre-amps many years ago. Just cos you wrote 'LATEST' that's all, as if it were a current product. I think David Neel of this forum had an A...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
There are so many factors involved in getting enjoyment from a music replay set up that generalisation can sometimes be more misleading than helpful. Apart from the equipment and the set up, there is the room, the context (home? on the move? ), the listener's habits, and their expectations. 'Source...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
I agree charlie1. There’s a level below which no component can be allowed to fall, be that a turntable, an amplifier, a speaker, a cable or even individual components, such as resistors, capacitors etc, making up each major component. I think source first emerged when the LP12 demonstrated that nea...

Re: Record player for daughter
My daughter will hear her Linn Axis for the first time on Saturday. It was quite cheap and unfortunately doesn't spin at 45rpm. In addition, the anti-scatting appears to be defective, as it immediately sprints to zero with the slightest touch. It is difficult to leave the value at 1.5. Three exampl...

More on source first and other priorities
I'm sure by now we've all learned the value a source first approach to system building within a limited budget. And many thanks to the various members who helped me on that journey. A journey that started quite a long time ago soon after I joined. Time has flown. Yet what's more important to me than...

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
Thanks Tom. Could there be a way of fixing a new arm using the existing screw holes used by this new arm collar? Perhaps Linn would offer their 'special' 250 customers a special deal on a new arm. Better that than having to sell the Ekos SE and Keel in order to get a new super duper arm. From the p...

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
Great post - thanks Thomas!!!
I've added it to the LP12 Product History page.
Is there a unique serial number for these or do they just follow the current numbering?
I guess it's safe to assume Linn has a new arm in the pipeline then.
