Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Thank you all for your contributions. Pleased with the positive feedback to the clips and overall setup. Now the most interesting part. B is Gaio 2 and A is 2.4. Have I botched the setup? The recording conditions? Something else? Due to the nature of this comparison I obviously can’t cross check wit...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

We have to remember it is early days to judge the “new” 2.4 whichever it is....... Yes, Tony & Entity, burn-in is 150+ hours/playing music and continue to improve ... This is a good point. Just to be absolutely clear - my Gaio was upgraded from 2 to 2.4 and has had many hours of use as a version 2....

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

On A2/3 sounds like acoustics is changed and sounds like "empty" room ... Do you mean it changes between A2 and A3? I just checked the time stamps and all "A" clips are recorded within a 12 minute time span. The kids were asleep and the wife not home. I only moved between the sofa and the turntable...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Alright, let’s see how this goes. Gaio 2 vs Gaio 2.4. For logistics reasons there are a couple of weeks between recording the clips. Everything else is, as far as possible, kept the same although filling level and positioning of fruit basket and wine glass is a variation we’ll have to accept. They’r...

Re: Gaio 2::

Today the Gaio 2:: (as is the actual rear panel marking rather than a 4) and I were reunited with the rest of the Hi-Fi. Pardon my (still) poor tune dem lingo... but it’s good. It plays beautiful music. Is the improvement in the bass, as suggested in the upgrade announcement? It may well be, but the...

Re: Oscar's system and first world problems

Upgrade Monday! First day back at work after a winter holiday with the family - and a package was waiting for me. My Gaio 2 is now a Gaio 2.4. My immediate impression is that it is indeed a better machine. The upgrade was said to mainly address bass, but I dare say it’s both tidier and stronger acro...

Re: Torqued equipment...

I’m not gonna go against Fredrik’s expertise on this specific matter, but in general it would be reasonable to assume “torque down” to be an erroneous method. If a guitar string is tuned too high you first go slightly below the right note and then tune up. If a bicycle tyre is overinflated you let a...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Whilst acknowledging that the hierarchy does place the cables in question very high, one can’t help but wonder whether the effect would be the same with less refined/revelatory downstream components and setup. I mean, most would probably agree that either of the two clips are in fact very good. I p...

I 'herd' that tuning cows to improve the moosic can be an udder pain ;)
Interference from electrical fences is the likely cause. Roaming limitations are detrimental to digital playback.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Another thing: using the clips as guiding line my system has only improved it’s ability to play music. In short: it works! :-) That’s reassuring. With all the discussion about the extraordinary complexity of good digital reproduction I just wondered if the possibility of a “false positive” using cl...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Now that “what is going on in the hifi world” has been sorted I needed to find a new hobby. It is rather peaceful and can be enjoyed while listening to music. https://www.dropbox.com/s/eh6120p8d8omfrb/Billede%2012.02.2020%2021.08.03.jpg?dl=0 Fill your boots but I'm glad to see the back of them. Re: EVENTS

Let’s not forget the Slipsik is twice the price of the Gaio.

While I’m very pleased with my Gaio (on its way back in 2.4 version) I would certainly hope spending twice as much would yield an improvement.

Source first would also suggest upgrading the turntable rather than going from Gaio and up...

Re: HAKAI Build Help?

Hi, Just for curiosity, how do you enable Spotify Connect on Hakai? Do you use debian 9 stretch or something else? Thanks! -e- That's a very good question... My Hakai is running Snakeoil which does have a Spotify Connect player included. However, as per above, I haven't yet managed to get it fully ...

Re: Adios JBL

The difference between the two clips is obvious if you look at the right corner and notice that in the clip with the later timestamp the big, black subwoofer has been banished. I had not even noticed the sub appear in the second clip - shows how observant I am - I was too busy listening perhaps :) ...

Control Apps

Hello, thought it would be relevant with a tread to discuss pros and cons of the various control apps available. I got my Hakai to work last night and made my first ever attempt using Linn Kazoo; it has been mentioned on here and is available for iPhone. Since I at present don't have a NAS but only ...

Oh it’s close now...

I have a Hakai that can play Spotify Connect through the headphone out.

Working on the USB-output.

Once the NAS is ready I’ll also try other players.

But the build was reasonably smooth!

Re: Gaio 2

My Gaio 2 is on its way to Uppsala to have a dot and a four added on the back panel. I recorded some ‘before’ clips before packing it. These at least came out better than my previous attempts so let’s see if they can make for a useful comparison after the upgrade. Reports from Hamburg may be forthco...

This is a nice tread, deserves a resurrection.

Picked up a some dirt cheap but excellent copies of The Clash’s ‘London Calling’ and Elvis Costello’s ‘My Aim is True’ the other day. Covers look like shit but the vinyl is VG+.

Only had them on CD before... they’re (even) better albums now.

Re: HAKAI Build Help?

Solution, until further notice. I’ve fitted the power PCB as is but have turned the button inside out so it’s effectively a removable cover. To switch machine on (or off, though disconnecting the mains power also achieves this) I take the ‘cover’ off and bridge the two lower pins on the right side o...

Re: HAKAI Build Help?

Further update: I can switch the machine on and off by “hotwiring” it, i.e. placing a screwdriver over the ‘power switch’ pins on the motherboard.

So the issue is indeed with the switch/PCB/button.

Re: HAKAI Build Help?

A couple of pictures showing how the PCB looks. In my mind there’s surely supposed to be something sitting inside the little box in the centre, for the button to engage.

Also a picture of how it’s connected, to the power switch + and -.
