Re: Snatex's System

I missed Fredrik’s guide the first time round, but it really is excellent, and the only way to set up a pair of speakres for maximum musical enjoyment.

Re: Netgear GS108T Power Supply

Thanks beck. Out of the two, I think the Netgear is the more musical by a slight margin, and the DIY has a better sound in that it is clearer, more open and spacious, but when the music gets more complex, the illusion starts to break down a bit. It’s OK’ish, but still not quite good enough. The old ...

Re: Netgear GS108T Power Supply

In that case, as long as I stay away from the text books, I should be fine! 😁

Seriously though, I’m finding that none of the text books mention anything related to designing for musicality, so it’s totally seat of the pants stuff!

Re: Netgear GS108T Power Supply

Sure, well over thirty years ago I used to build tube pre and power-amps. We regulated the living daylight out of every stage in those things and evaluated again and again and again.. Then I ran into Ivor and Charlie Brennan at CES in Chicago; we danced the night away in their hotel room to music p...

The voltage off the caps is about 20V, which is too high for the GS108T. It’s worth trying in the future though, with a lower voltage output transformer.

Re: Netgear GS108T Power Supply

I think we’re ok andy2. This area of the forum is set aside for diy projects, amongst other stuff. Just as a matter of interest, have you ever built your own power supply and listened to the result? The reason I ask is because at this point in my “power supply designer” career 😂 it’s not clear how m...

Thanks for your input andy2, and thanks for the link to the book - it’s a real gem 🤓 I’ve had a quick look at the book, but couldn’t find anything related to the circuits internal impedance. Would you mind explaining a bit more about that, and why you think it would help? I must stress that I’m an a...

Don’t expect too much, cos the transformer isn’t great, but it might give an indication of the direction it’s going in.

Transformer: This has yet to be decided. My favourite to date was a 25 year old Antrim Transformers model which has now developed an open circuit on the primary winding. Antrim Transformers was bought by TransTronic many moons ago, and they confirmed that the one I have is a 50VA version which they...

Definitely the Rega Planar 1 with an AT95 cartridge (not sure which particular version, charlie1 has some great experience with the carts, I’m sure he’ll be along in a bit to advise). BTW, don’t bother with any of the “similar” turntables - they’re all pants! Rega really are the undisputed budget Ki...

Re: Recommended tool for 242 3 k array torque settings

Hi Gussy, You’re right, there are ‘nuts’ which are screwed into the rear of the front baffle, but the bond between the nut and baffle will break down once its ability to resist turning is exceeded. Unfortunately, I know from experience that this can be as low as 1.5Nm, hence the suggestion to not ex...

Hi Spannko, How are you getting on at 0.55Nm? I’ve got a pair of Akudoriks and am following this thread with great interest! Hi Gussy, I intended to listen at 0.55Nm for a couple of days, but gave up after a couple of hours. In my system, 0.55Nm appeared to struggle with pitch and timing. For me, g...

Re: Recommended tool for 242 3 k array torque settings

I have fairly new Akudoriks and assume they were torqued correctly in the factory before shipping. I also assume that Linn use either air powered or electric tools to torque the bolts when assembling. The closest I have to that is a Makita 18v drill with a bit that does fit the bolts. The Makita ha...

I’m going to try 0.55Nm and live with it for a couple of days before going back to 0.75/0.80/0.85Nm.

Re: Recommended tool for 242 3 k array torque settings

Well gentlemen, we have a conundrum: Everybody preferred 0,55 Nm, as opposed to a unanimous preference for 0,8 on Spannko's Akudoriks. Could it be, that the values are different for Akudorik and Akubarik?? I have been living with 0,55 Nm on my Akubariks for more than a year now and like it a lot. G...

Re: Recommended tool for 242 3 k array torque settings

OK, it looks like A is the clear favourite, which is 0.80Nm. This doesn’t mean that 0.80Nm is the best setting for the 3K array, for 2 reasons: 1. 0.85Nm might be better as Thomas & Fredrik suggests 2. My torque driver has a 6% tolerance, so my 0.80Nm setting could be anywhere between 0.75Nm and 0.8...

Did you mean "0.90Nm" or was that a typo since it's labelled as 0.80Nm on Dropbox Fwiw, I'm for A too. Ah, well spotted! I originally set to 0.90Nm, then dropped to 0.80Nm, so you’re right, i...

Re: Recommended tool for 242 3 k array torque settings

I’ve just checked my Akudoriks and all the bolts were really loose (I haven’t check them for about 18 months). I tightened the bass units to 1Nm and the arrays to 0.9Nm. This sounded a bit too “etched” and hifi’y, which surprised me tbh. I tried 0.55Nm, but this didn’t work too well for me, so went ...

This is something I sometimes think about too.

For me, it would have to be a system built around the Troika, so it would be pre-circus LP12 + Lingo 1 + Ekos 1 + Kairn + Aktiv x/o + 3 off LK280/Spark + Isobariks + loads of great vinyl and music from the pre-loudness war days.

I think I know why I’ve become confused, after initially preferring the Cirkus. I’ve metamorphosed into a sheep! 🐑🐑🐑 I think I’ve succumbed to being influenced by the group, rather than purely making my own decision. I suppose this is why some people call for blind listening, with no discussion unti...
