Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

Yep, brass for me too and for the same reason as everyone else. Steel feels less musical all round. Great system too!

Re: Opinion wanted | Replacing a Kairn for center channel and sub or just improved stereo

OK. Given that you’re asking for advice on a way forward on this particular forum, we need to be thinking about how you can improve the tune playing ability of your system. I’ve heard quite a few Linn home theatre setups and although they sound very impressive, not one of them was capable of making ...

Re: Opinion wanted | Replacing a Kairn for center channel and sub or just improved stereo

Hello Ninth Wave,

It’s often said that if you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there! With this in mind, where do you see yourself going with your system? What’s your end goal? When you know this, deciding upon the next step is relatively easy.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

It’s not a price based rating system. Many manufacturers charge posh nosh prices, but sadly all they deliver is pub grub fare.

Thanks guy’s! It’ll be interesting to see how the rating system works for you Fredrik, although for me, you’re already producing posh nosh!

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

Thank you gentlemen. It’s been an interesting journey, with many turns taking me back quite a few steps. Thankfully though, the general trend has been upward! I’ve developed a rating system of 7 categories which I think of as being likened to 1. Pig Swill, 2. Below Average Pub Grub, 3. Average Pub G...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

It’s been far too long since I posted videos of my speaker project, so here’s a few new videos of where the project has got to. After two years I’m still working on one speaker at a time, and the base panel of this particular speaker is sealed with foam strip to allow me to insert blocks of known vo...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

I can hear how 109’s might appeal to some, particularly with the opening bass line, but like most here, I just find the Kans more engaging.

A for me. The streams are also a bit awkward to access because they’re muted by default.

Re: What’s Slam Got To Do With It?

For me, slam, is really a lower frequency transient, caused by say an energetic plucking of a double bass string or a crack on a drum. The joy of hearing it might very much depend upon whether it was there in the original performance. And - not for me to say - where does tunedem fit into this? FWIW...

Is slam a good attribute? Can there be poor slam? How would we be able to tell the difference?

What’s Slam Got To Do With It?

…. It’s nothing but a second hand artefact. Oftentimes in life, we have to be careful what we wish for. This is particularly so within the realm of high fidelity, or audiophilia. Ever since Linn introduced the Isobarik’s with their ability to produce prodigious amounts of super tight bass, particula...

Fantastic Pete! Linn Records would often use Espek’s to monitor their recordings in preference to any other speaker, so you’ve got a great system there. Enjoy!

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

I've never designed or built a loudspeaker in my life, but I do know that any material will damp resonances at some frequencies. It's also pretty well known that symmetry is not a must for speaker cabinets for performace reasons, they are done more for cost reasons. This makes me thing that experim...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

What happens if you have a tunefork resonanse from the cabinet exactly at the frequency of a musical tone ? Remember you can always build a stiff, high Q resonating cabinet without tunefork effects if you use different thickness on every opposite wall in the speaker, also the sidewalls . This will ...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

Maybe there is also an inverse relation between dimensions and musicality? Possibly. I’ve a feeling that each additional kg, regardless of its role or purpose, reduces musicality due to the time it takes for vibrations to decay, thus smearing transients. However, increasing the size of the enclosur...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?

On the subject of lower mass cabinets, I've heard quite a few open baffle designs (with conventional drivers, not referring here to electrostatics) - essentially as low mass as practically possible. I haven't found any of them to be musical - although most were DIY designs, but that's not an automa...

This week I’m building an enclosure of approximately 600 x 250 x 250 which weighs about the same as the original Kans. Maybe there is also an inverse relation between dimensions and musicality? Possibly. I’ve a feeling that each additional kg, regardless of its role or purpose, reduces musicality d...
