Re: Streaming service

Qobuz is generally considered to be the best for sound quality through DS’s. The difference between Qobuz and Spotify through a DS is very noticeable. Qobuz is £15/month and sounds better than most (all?) NAS’s, which makes it good value for money.

Linear Power Supply For Netgear GS108T

I’ve put quite a bit of effort into building a power supply to better the one supplied with the Netgear GS108T network switch, and it feels like I’m getting pretty close now. After hearing what a good power supply can do, my thoughts about how good the supplied power supply is have changed slightly....

Re: Whopping the Topping

Especially in the context of it being easy to find speakers that thrash Linn M140's when it comes to tunefulness - with the big proviso that the speakers that I've come across so far that beat M140's most comprehensively are bigger and uglier. lindsayt, Which DS firmwares do you find the most music...

Great clips beck, thanks for sharing. Ultimately, I preferred your lp12, but the NAD sounds way better than it has any right to!

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

More and more, I’m thinking that what’s needed is an internet forum/magazine/blog/database type thing, which would be a like a cross between the playground and eg Darko, The Ear etc, where potential purchasers are able to compare the sound of typical entry level music systems (Sonos, Bose, JBL etc) ...

I feel the same way about all the new stereo Linn “Chakra” power amps too. In active mode I think they can be excellent, but I honestly think that even a KT really struggles in passive mode.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I wonder if there’s another explanation, because ideally, tune, rhythm & coherence should all agree. It’s possible that your Linn combo is only firing on 11 cylinders: it’s able to play tunes better than the naim, but it’s still not “right”, which only makes itself known over time. It’ll be interest...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Whether we all hear differently is a can of worms I like to try and avoid if I can: it’s an inconvenient truth which tends to muddy the waters a little bit! I like the idea that the component which reproduces pitch the most accurately is the best, which logically has to be true (even from a mathemat...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I do prefer the more laid back dynamics / speed / presentation of the Linn amps though but this comes secondary to the mental effort required to interpret the music. I think this is a really important point. There must be something going on with the Linn combo, which doesn’t come across in the vide...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Don't know about you but I can focus on different things and end up with a different preference when comparing both clips. It's like my brain can slot into one of two modes. The default mode tends to prefer Naim and the timing of everything together, but it can shift over and prefer the Linn for mo...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

Sadly, everything beck & charlie1 have said is true. I’m pretty sure that the reason companies can get away with releasing unmusical HiFi is because half of buyers are not aware that HiFi systems vary in their ability to play rhythms & tunes, half are aware but are unable to discriminate between tho...

It’s the cupboard where one keeps ones fruit juices. Doesn’t every one have one?
Like Lego, I've never heard of one. Mine just go in the fridge or the pantry depending on whether they need refridgeration.
How very strange!

Re: Karousel

Great work ThomasOK! It appears that the difference between optimally torqued and otherwise is critical to getting the best out of the Karousel.

Now that you’ve optimised the torque, it would be really interesting to hear a serviced Cirkus deck compared to the optimised Karousel 🤞

...so can't see me going back to Naim on this system. This system is really just background music whilst I work. However, I value it a lot and it adds a lot of enjoyment to my day. I'm beginning to suspect that the slightly weaker rhythm and timing is distracting my mind a little as I work. It's sl...
