Re: NAS Software

I'm using Debian plus Asset on my Hakai NAS. Is there any benefit to using OMV instead of generic Debian? Either for ease of use or, better, for musicality? What you have is an OS plus a media server. OMV is an OS with nas functionality and I'm guessing would relay health of HDs etc which is probab...

Re: Volumio.

Alright, step by step guide: 1. Download http://updates.volumio.org/x86/volumio/2.394/volumio-2.394-2018-04-14-x86.img.zip 2. Create a bootable USB disk like described on the Volumio website 3. I trust that you can start this Volumio image like you did before? On a laptop or PC other then your HAKA...

Re: Motherboards

I used 2 x 4GB Not because I need 8GB memory, but Gigabyte states on their website that it’s better to have 2 memory slots used instead of 1. (But I cannot find this statement anymore, I’m sure I’ve read it somewhere on their website) They would say that in that if you wanted to double up to 16gb y...

Ah, because the music went over the air... gotcha. :) I think I'll go with OpenMediaVault if no one is of the opinion that there is a better or simpler choice. That's the one I'm going to go with, let me know how you proceeded with it, I managed it once then after that continued to get errors durin...

Re: NAS Software

Perhaps Synology isn't very good as a music NAS then? I don't remember it being recommended very much but perhaps I remember wrong. I have never tried it myself. (BTW, as I understand the concept "tuneful", I don't think "more light and airy" necessarily means "more tuneful".) Bad attempt at a joke...

It's a Synology, I was expecting Hifi type improvement with wired nas but I'm sure I got a musical regression, I could be wrong. Wireless seemed more light and airy.. :0)

What do you mean by running more stable and dev volumio build Sopper

Any new conclusions, guys? I will start building the units tomorrow, both the HAKAI and the NAS. I just bought three 160gb ssds. 1) Selecting OS My experience with the QNAP NAS is that after shutting down background services, the system improves tune. Sometimes a LOT! Even for idle services... Re: FRIWO 12 v medical grade PSU for Netgear GS108 switch

Hi Lego I can indeed confirm that the MPP15 Med 12V FRIWO suited for Netgear GS108 switches is indeed RS part number 472-8572. There is also a version that doesn't come with the medical approval tag and I'm assured by a FRIWO distributor that the only technical difference is that they don't come wi...

Well, well, now we need a set of clips comparing the ADSM with its integrated DAC vs. with the RME DAC... I can do that, but will post it in playground for practical listening exercises thread. Re: Musical Unpleasantness

Would you be able to tell if someone was a very musical player? Yes, from the first note. Please compare Ritchie Blackmore and Yngwie Malmsteen One play music, the other is more focused on speed and technical brilliance. Is there a difference between musicality in hifi and musicality in someone pla...

I have found a site in the U.K. that claims to have 10+ of the GA-N3160N-D3V motherboards in stock, but they only ship to U.K. addresses. It can be found here: https://www.kikatek.com/Product/1070825-GAN3160ND3V-GIGABYTE-Int-MB-N310N-D3V-DDR4-M-ITX Are any of our U.K. members familiar with this out...

In the UK there is a terrible radio station called BBC Radio 2, it basically plays music from 30 odd years ago, obviously hated by teenagers, I know my kids are always moaning about it. You'd be amazed how many of my contemporaries say how good radio 2 has become. You couldn't make it up. lol

This has been stated here and there many times before but I doubt it can be mentioned enough. It is amazing how much more accessible a tuneful system makes music. Re: General discussion about HAKAI

Are people using Volumio as just a renderer (controlling it from another app, like Lumin, Bubble etc), as opposed to it finding the music to play? I've just put a Hakai together and going through the find the library stage. It sees my Synology NAS, but not the shares. I tried manually connecting wi...
