Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I have never met or heard of anyone using the Tune Method who says that a diagonal connection is more musical. It's a silly theory invented by someone who didn't listen. That's a very strong dismissive response, Mr L! Not my preferred configuration I must admit, but it was suggested to me by an est...

It may not be the right way to do it but I really do enjoy what I have got. :-)
Then, my friend, it IS the right way to do it. Continue enjoying it!

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Have you guys tried connecting the speaker plugs directly to the treble? That's usually the top two posts on the speaker terminal. The treble always benefit from having the best quality signal and It's also recommended by Fredrik to do so when running speakers in a single wire configuration. Also w...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

If you want to bypass plates on the back of speakers, try soldering two speakers plugs, at exactly the correct spacing to the end of one piece of wire, making something that looks like an "F". To make this easy to solder precisely, take an old piece of wood and drill two holes in it so that the spea...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I may have missed something Beck, but have you tried using just half the K400 in single wire mode.
Better than K20 to my (non-tunedem) ears.....

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

I understand that one reason the Walkman Pro was so good was because it internally generates its own DC at a higher voltage rail. Which is why it is impossibly expensive on batteries. I remember having to change them at an interval to record a concert! Sony's own mains power supply seemed quite good...

Re: Latest records to enter your collection

Ella Fitzgerald The Lost Berlin Tapes 1962. If you are an Ella fan this is jazz singing at its best. So much energy. Not sure it warrants issuing in hi-res, but well recorded and stored! Listening to it on Qobuz. Supposedly found in Norman Grantz's vault. I wonder what else is there. If you can, do ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

OK, I listened the rest of the way through. The drummer in B needs new drums and new hands as it is all over the place. The other instruments are also playing together better in A which overall is fairly listenable, B is not. This for me illustrates the problem of listening to needle drops and the ...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

I still own a Walkman Pro and used it as my cassette deck in my Linn and Linn/Naim systems back when I was using cassettes. It was actually a very good machine. I have one too. Excellent machine. I remember one of the UK flat earth hifi magazines in the 1980s maintained that it was the most musical...

Re: Home Network tweaking (was 'Buy or Rent')

As I have hinted before, rather than considering connecting and disconnecting the internet from the hifi part of the home network, I have bought a couple of these TP-LINK MC100CM 10/100M RJ45 to 100M Full-Duplex Multi-Mode SC Fiber Converter https://www.tp-link.com/uk/business-networking/accessory/m...

Re: Home Network tweaking (was 'Buy or Rent')

Hi Matt disconnecting the network during playback? To be honest I have not really tried this - seems likely to lead to frustration, although well worth trying. I also use Qobuz, so would be a pain! I have installed an optical link north of my Melco Switch and south of the rest of the home network so...

Re: Home Network tweaking (was 'Buy or Rent')

Hi Lego, I am not an expert on home networks which is why you might understand my elementary understanding of DHCP. In a small home network everything is able to talk to everything else on the network either by radio (wifi) or cable (ethernet or optical). For them all to make sense they need to know...

Re: Streaming from internet Vs NAS

Interesting thoughts Matthias. I certainly agree that the less network activity there is, is a good thing. (see other thread(s)). Of course one can do different tests to prove your hypothesis: 1) Plug the internet straight into the streamer. Listen. Then put it all back together. 2) Set up a play li...

Re: Songcorder: record your vinyl as digital

Sounds interesting. But another, free, approach on a Mac is to.... Connect turntable to a standard preamplifier using the RIAA curve on that. Feed the audio into the Mac sound card. Use Audacity to record. Note, with Catalina, Audacity needs to be launched via Terminal to overcome permissions proble...

Home Network tweaking (was 'Buy or Rent')

Well Spannko, thanks for the encouragement. To make a start. It seems that the noise flowing around a home network does reduce the musicality of streamed music. Not just the path from say your NAS to your streamer, but any noise that flows, say from the internet, your router, or any other appliance ...

Home Network tweaking (was 'Buy or Rent')

I think the debate so far has made certain assumptions and, perhaps of necessity has been simplified. Do we take if as given that streamed music sounds as good as well ripped and stored FLAC or WAV files? Do we take it that Hi-Res files can sound better than "ordinary" red book rips or streams? Do w...

Re: Does a better system make you want to hear the same album less often?

I think Sunbeamgls has better developed what I was trying to say earlier. Having a better system certainly makes some artists, even different genres of music more enjoyable. And how many times have we read on forums over the years "now I have bought a Tundra, it has made me want to listen to my reco...

Re: Karousel

I guess this thread is turning into a musical Carousel rather than a Karousel, so apologies to continue. Re: Karousel

Not to digress too much, but just a word about musicians. I have worked with many better musicians than myself over the years, and most have terrible hifi systems. This seems to be because some musicians listen to music in terms of simply what it represents. They listen to much of what is going on r...

Losslessalbums site

Hi Friends, Can anyone tell me anything about this site? https: // losslessalbums.club I have not put it in a live link because I am not sure it is safe or legal. It appears to contain a gold mine of Flac rips of mainly popular music, and it seems to be located in the USA. Maybe it is via a VPN. I h...

Well, it is a couple of days since I asked if we could have a separate category called Music in which we could discuss our favourite loves, hates, test pieces and new releases. Why music here?

Just a question....
Why do we have discussions about music on "On the Inside" thread? I sort of presumed that discussions posted here were of a more technical nature.
Could we have a whole new category called Music?
