Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I'm sorry I missed the NAS clips but I was in Canada for the Labor Day holiday enjoying Lake Erie and the beautiful marshes of Point Pelee. I expect I am not listening to NAS units on this as it looks like the LP12 is playing. I preferred clip 1 in both cases. I found that they let me relax into th...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

For yesterday's clips, I'm with Spannko and Tenderberry. I prefer my LSNAS to my HAKAI NAS. But do remember there are other variables in the build. For today's, I've only listened to the clips enough to check they are working. I have, of course, listened to them live. I know which I prefer in the fl...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I've had to delete the previous links to make space in Dropbox, but thanks for all the comments. Here are three more pairs. The first is now deleted to free up dropbox space. 1. deleted 2. deleted 1. https://www.dropbox.com/s/y8uxfz42140az94/20180904_142355.mp4?dl=0 2. https://www.dropbox.com/s/39pi...

Re: Trimming Lejonklou Amps in an Active System

Each amplifier has an individual setting which is noted on the multimeter. You should use this. The optimum setting may vary slightly between different units. I can't think why an active system should make any difference if monos could be different side to side (mine are the same).

Re: Motherboards

You could insert this card: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Ports-Mini-PCI-E-PCI-Express-to-SATA-3-0-Hard-Drive-Extension-Adapter-Card-/142900820069 Thanks for the idea! I'd prefer it on the motherboard, if only to reduce the variables. If someone evaluates the J1900 board and gives it a glowing review ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I think it can be useful to get input from us lot, but ultimately, you need to decide which you prefer. I know you're good at that, even if it takes a while. You've now got Spannko preferring the second clip (on the first two tracks at least) so, whichever you choose, you will not be entirely alone...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Thanks for posting the clips David. Thanks for prodding me into doing it! I have learned a lot today, and am still trying to understand the final pair... For the first two pairs, option one was the HAKAI NAS, option 2 the LSNAS. I'm going to do another recording of the other change tomorrow, so won...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

This was not a comparison between the two NASes, was it? No it wasn't. And it has shocked me, as the result was not what I had expected. It's only two days since I did the same comparison, with a different source and a different result. And now I'm back listening to vinyl, getting very different re...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

The streamer is my ADS/3.

The HAKAI NAS is running Debian and the N3050N-D2P motherboard, the LSNAS Windows 7, which I have felt in the past is very slightly behind Debian.

Re: Motherboards

Update: the J3455N-D3H has failed and is on its way back to Amazon for a refund, while I think what to do next. I've compared on the Gigabyte website, and only the J3355N-D2P seems an alternative, but as it has only 2 SATA connections it wouldn't work as a NAS.

Re: Mains improvement, after the wall socket

Spannko, As somebody who has never listened to music on my phone, never made a video on my phone, never posted a picture in a forum because he doesn't understand (and can't be bothered to learn?) how to do this, and not listened to any of the playground clips, I'm not a prime candidate for doing thi...

Well, 48 hours later, are you going to spill the beans? Or will mine be the only multi-word post in this thread?

Re: Mains improvement, after the wall socket

I guess I owe you all an update... I had an interesting afternoon several weeks ago. My Linn dealer came round with some bits and pieces: mains cables, interconnects, speaker cables, signal grounding boxes. Too much actually; we only played with the mains cables. Once we had done these comparisons t...

Re: Motherboards

Motherboard impressions: as both a NAS and as a streamer, the N3050N-D2P is more musical, but sounds a bit "thin"; the J3455N-D3H is more impressive and "full" but lacks the same level of musical engagement. Caveat: I suspect burn-in may improve both, the signs are there as performance seems a bit i...

Re: GIGAPORT HD/HD+

I've had similar messages with the N3050N-D2P motherboard. It seems to relate to the communication between Volumio and the NAS as a session is started, and normally disappears if I try again after a couple of minutes. Once Volumio is playing nicely with a NAS, no further messages.

Motherboards

The trouble with quick comparisons is controlling the variables! I'm currently living with a power strip and power cords which I may well buy - subject to a final comparison at the weekend with my trusted Linn dealer helping with the listening. And then my LSNAS played hide-and-seek with Volumio whe...

Motherboards

I purchased my N3150N-D3V as an untested open box which had been returned to Amazon and then sold as part of a huge job lot to an ebay trader. When I initially couldn't get it working I feared the worst, but couldn't do anything with it as it has no HDMI port. Thank you to tokenbrit for pointing out...

Re: Gigabyte N3150N-D3V vs. Asus E45M1-I Deluxe Mini-itx

After Azazello found that the N3150N-D3V was superior to the Asus E45M1-I, I was keen to investigate the potential for replacing my LSNAS. It also gave me an opportunity to demonstrate my ineptitude with software... I have rebuilt my HAKAI as a NAS. After previous experimentation with the LSNAS, I a...

Re: General discussion about HAKAI (Split from original thread)

I believe that the GSM Plus board you're looking at is not powered by an ATX power supply... So skip it and remember that ATX power is required for this DIY project. Thanks Fredrik. That was my take on it given what you said about the 3160TN... Will wait for a recommended m'board to become availabl...

Re: General discussion about HAKAI (Split from original thread)

Not sure I understand what you are trying to say? Is the 3150N-D3V much better then the N3050N-D2P..? I wanted a second board so that I have the option to build a NAS. The 3050N-D2P has only two SATA ports, which is fine for a HAKAI streamer, but the 3150N-D3V has four SATA ports, so for a NAS it c...
