Re: The New Lejonklou Streamer

I'm quiet about this mainly because I'm working on it constantly. Seven models have been made. Some bad, others good, one really great. But not quite as breathtaking as it needs to be. Number eight is under construction. This one is technically very complicated and will require months of fine tunin...

Re: The New Lejonklou Streamer

It seems to have gone quiet on the Lejonklou digital player. Is there any news on when it might be ready?

Given that halving K400 has a finite lifetime as supplies dry up, is there a current "preferred" alternative?

Linn use an AKM DAC for Katalyst - traditional and Exakt versions.

Re: Portable DAC

Chord Mojo. I've only compared it with the Dragonfly, but the Mojo was a long way ahead (for more money of course).
I think the Mojo is the current generation's equivalent to the NAD 3020 in terms of good music on a budget.

Q Acoustics standmounts with big reductions at Richer Sounds Great little speakers which perform way better than their price and size would suggest. Re: JBL 3677

I wonder why they say this about this new speaker? "Advanced passive crossover network combined with leading edge DSP in the amplifier produce highly accurate playback and response" Is there a particular amplifier they're referring to? A particular DSP profile they'll recommend? Do they have some ki...

Re: Do we really want a full understanding of music from our hi-fi?

A fascinating subject. Some music just doesn't interest me - for example, New Orleans Jazz, or that modern type of classical music that seems to be more about showing off the technical competency of the composer or musicians than it is about conveying a message or feeling. I don't know why it doesn'...

Re: The meaning of Source First

I think Spannko was referring to the musical meaning of tune, pitch, timing, rhythmn etc. Terms to descibe his understanding of what musical means to him perhaps. To create the emotional aspects of music, musical techniques are used. For example, upping the tempo creates a feeling of urgency, swapp...

Re: The meaning of Source First

I believe that accurate timing and pitch reproduction are critical. Fortunately, because we're talking about perceived pitch, listening to a systems tune playing ability allows us to ignore the timing whilst at the same time, totally nailing it! What we also end up with is "true" timing, and not fo...

Re: The meaning of Source First

http://www.acs.psu.edu/drussell/Demos/RoomModes/driving.html Thanks for the link sunbeam. I found it really helpful in understanding more about how speaker positioning affects the modal response of the room, even though I feel it's slightly academic in that I think there are other factors which hav...

Re: The meaning of Source First

Sunbeam, I think there's something you're not getting here. The link you posted is not unknown to us, it's basic knowledge. It's also useless on the level where our discussions are, because if room nodes were the answer, most speakers would end up at the same position in a given room. And that posi...

Re: The meaning of Source First

No, its about source first but has driven into a discussion about speaker placement and why it's so important. Speaker positioning down to the last mm is crucial to get the best out of the setup. Your link has absolutely NOTHING to do with musicality and using the tune method to find the best place...

Re: The meaning of Source First

Sorry sunbeam, but optimising the position of loudspeakers in a room does not minimise room nodes in the simple (and IMHO useless) way that space does. If that was the case, we would have had a mathematical method for it decades ago. No apology required. I never mentioned SPACE. I wrote about using...

Re: The meaning of Source First

Erik, I don't disagree that a digital front end needs to be set up well, as much as an analogue one does. The point I was trying to get across was that its much easier to set up an analogue source very badly than it is to set up a digital source very badly. The degree of opportunity to screw up the ...

Re: The meaning of Source First

It would seem, particularly for a system with an analogue source, that the careful set up of the source will be more important than any other component. It would be interesting to make comparisons between the physical set up of an SSD NAS vs an HDD NAS vs a well supported / badly suppprted streamer ...

Re: The meaning of Source First

To summarise, there's been two threads to this topic. There is the source first finding itself, which is one thread. Glad the source only name has been challenged and we can just debate the meaning of source first. Sunbeam thinks it means something else to many of us but I still maintain he underst...

Time to move on. Its getting repetitive. I'll stick with source first as a relative priority for me, in line with many of the forum members, judging by system listings.

Thanks for the constructive contributions.

Re: The meaning of Source First

Sunbeam, If we were to think about the "source" as being the performer, your logic suggests that you would be happier listening to an X Factor contestant on the very best sounding system (of your choice), compared to Dame Janet Baker played on my Bush "hifi" which I bought for my children 15 years ...

Re: The meaning of Source First

what's lost at the source can't be recovered. Source first says this. True! But then you write the following...totally contradicting source first. It can't be both. But I'd far rather lose a little musicality at the source than lose lots of musicality later in the chain. That way I get more music. ...
