Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?
I guess it comes down with how music works. Its ordered frequencies in the time domain. Less order, worse sound. If energy is lost somewhere in the system it cant be recovered later in the chain. If one hifi system makes you tap your feet more than another - its a better system and most probably mo...

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
……….I don't recall Linn doing marketing during the time I bought kit from their shop in Glasgow (or any other time)………. Perhaps marketing is lost on me. I believe this is known as being hoisted by your own petard 😂 I'm about to buy chocolate - have I fallen victim to a sneaky marketing campaign? No...

Re: Which is the optimal length of speaker wires?
I had it some time ago. Linn Axis or Digital with K400 in 2.48m length on Keilidh/Tukan with Naim 72/140. In fact, I couldn't hear any difference. However, this was before the Keilidh crossovers got new capacitors, which gave the speakers a significant boost. In the next few days I'll be making two...

For me, 353 sounds groovy, whilst 352 sounds disjointed.lejonklou wrote: ↑2023-11-13 23:20 Here's a practical listening exercise:
Can you hear any difference between these two clips? It's perfectly OK if you can't!

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
Despite all of the changes at Linn in the last 50 years, there’s one thing which hasn’t changed: some people believe the marketing bullshit and some people don’t.

Re: Linn 50th Anniversary
I'm not getting much sense of musical passion from either link 🤷 I wonder what Ivor thinks of the direction Linn has taken since Gilad has taken over? There certainly doesn’t seek to be much emphasis on rhythm’s and tunes these days. I switched off the first video after hearing that Jonny “Dieter R...

Keilidh’s with the latest bass and three bar treble units and polymer stands are an enjoyable listen for about £200

There’s the Royd Coniston R’s too. They partner very well with the creeks and they’re both available for under £100
PS I’ve given my grandson a 4040 with a pair of Coniston R’s to use as computer speakers and he absolutely loves them!

Re: More on source first and other priorities
I don’t know of one loudspeaker, past or present which comes near to reproducing the potential of the most musical sources and amplifiers we have available to us today. I'm intrigued: how do you know? Maybe it's crazy to expect a couple of fancy cones of paper to recreate any instrument ever create...

….. just normal unmusical speakers like 90% on the market ….. Sad, but almost true! I’d go as far as saying at least 99%, maybe more 😳 But I wonder if this is the crux of the problem? Not easy on the first two, but I think I have a preference for E4 over D3. I’ll listen again later.

Am I right in thinking that “detuned”, from a musical perspective doesn’t mean “out of tune”.

. Having no knowledge whatsoever about music, I had never appreciated this before; but I think explains my aversion to musical systems with poorly controlled bass, opting for those with less bass but better control. In the early 70’s I remember feeling physically nauseous when listening to my cousi...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
I think if the source is top notch or is well setup(LP12) then you'd really need to get a terrible amp and speaker setup to not enjoy putting a record on. Comparing amps and speakers you would come across something better or worse, but the main outcome is always enjoyable listening. If not it's defin...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
I agree charlie1. There’s a level below which no component can be allowed to fall, be that a turntable, an amplifier, a speaker, a cable or even individual components, such as resistors, capacitors etc, making up each major component. I think source first emerged when the LP12 demonstrated that near...

Re: Record player for daughter
All three sound fundamentally wrong to me. I’m sure a Rega P2 with a budget AT cartridge would be a much better choice. The Rega’s don’t sound “wrong”, they’re just not as good as an LP12. Charlie1 is our resident budget AT expert and I think he’s had good results with one of the cheaper Rega’s.

The JBL flip 5 isn’t too bad. They’ve been replaced by the flip 6 but can still be purchased for around £80. They have a rechargeable battery, are waterproof and can be linked to form a stereo pair. A workman was using one outside and its musical sound caught my attention so I got one for listening ...
