Re: Linn Bananas
I will just add this to the mix from an overcast beautiful downtown York. Firstly Season's greetings to my friends here. Secondly - those of you near York and in touch with Hamish at the Sound Organisation, do chat to him about his latest "find". He has been stocking the skeletal Z type plugs for so...

Re: Thoughts on HiFi
I think this a very interesting aspect of our hobby Charlie1 and quite brave of you to raise it really. I am sure you are being hard on yourself. I know a lot of remarkably non-musical friends who may also have poor systems who get a great deal of pleasure - often from music that I would not have in...

Re: Optimum ripping solutions
I find dBpoweramp is great. I set mine to Flac "lossless uncompressed". I always rip to a hard disk in my computer for ease and speed of writing - this I use as primary store of my music. I then tidy up any metadata using Tag Editor (on my Mac) Mp3tag is good for windows. I then transfer the file(s)...

Re: DS firmware - what is the lastest on the most musical one?
Forgive me if it has been posted elsewhere, but Linn has closed it previous Firmware and Beta links Colin of Linn sent me this https://docs.linn.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Konfig_Manual#Recovery_Procedure I haven't had time to have a good look at it, but it seems a bit of a muddle to me. But useful to get...

Use a pile of coins to make up the 8th position. I bet you never hear the difference.
And just think, somewhere in the universe there must be a hifi enthusiast who is listening to their system using only one skeet.

Re: Is aktiv operation best in all respects (same quality amp)?
Having tried various ways of wiring speakers and amplifiers in my home over the years, and hearing some of the top Linn systems in dealers' audition rooms and shows, I must concur with Matthias when he says "passive system single amping and single wiring is the most musical sounding". I am not sure ...

Re: DS firmware - what is the lastest on the most musical one?
I presume that 4.53.125 came out before Kat. Therefore not an option for some of us. I get the impression that the recent firmwares, at least for my ADS, sound rather similar. As does the very latest 4.70.300. Perhaps I am getting unexpectation fatigue. Bit of a habit updating all the time. I do not...

Re: Routers and switches.
Hi Matt Thank you for your long posting. When I first read it I understood that you owned a Naim Statement! I like your description of how to identify good music reproduction. Much like my own method. I have found that using my Virgin Superhub as a modem and getting another router, and thence to a s...

Try putting the spikes back, using the Skeets, and putting a small blob of bluetak under each Skeet.

Re: Is this possible and safe?
It seems that you have been forgotten, old chap..... If I understand you correctly you have this - a really good preamplifier, and you are proposing feeding that into a unit of obviously lesser quality, using it just as a headphone amplifier. Well there are no doubt better solutions, but without buy...

Re: Donuk's system
OK Defender, I have to admit, you have a point..... So I have lived with bi-amping for a few days. Some things are better. There is an even wider sound stage, and more detail in the music comes through. It is possible to hear hidden instruments a bit better on many tracks. I have tried swapping the ...

I used to have vinyl - LP12, Uphorik, Dynavector, &c Got rid of it all a few years ago - suddenly the cottage got a lot bigger. Now have Melco, Linn ADS/Kat, and the speakers are Totem Model 1 Signatures. I have had two amplifiers out on the racks (Isoblue) for some time. The problem is that I have ...

Re: Routers and switches.
I do not feel qualified to report on the sound of switches and cables. However I do think there are audible advantages to having the NAS (and Melco in my case) in a different room to the streamer. What I have also found makes a positive improvement, not least in functionality, is to install, effecti...

Re: How good are phono stages in vintage Linn preamps?
I agree with Charlie 1. The phono stage on the Majik Kontrol (moving coil) I found to be excellent. I had the opportunity of a second hand Linto, and found it hard to convince myself I had made an upgrade. When I got a Uphorik, things were very different. A significant upgrade. Re: Food for thought
I have often felt that early sixties pop music sounds more nostalgic when played on a three inch speaker driven by a couple of OC71s. I am sure early Beatles, Stones, Hollies and the like were mixed for this.

Sort of reminds me of the gag: "For sale, top rate hifi units for sale. Knock down prices. Phone 01245 535333. If a guy answers, ring off....." I like the Linn Klimax twin. Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
I use the same Kan stands with my Totem model one signatures. Interesting that the design seems to let the speakers breathe - that is you can feel the vibrations running through the steel struts. Certainly not a solid base for the speakers. I have positioned the stands at 90 degrees to the normal wa...

Re: Does clearer lyrics = better tune?
No. Those who have been involved with long distance broadcast reception (DXing with DSWCI) will know that intelligibility is improved if you cut frequencies below 150Hz and above, say 3 kHz. Not what the composer intended perhaps, but easier to hear the words, and dare I say it, the tune..... Donuk ...

If you have a wall fitted turntable -
lift out the board from its mounting spikes
lay two sturdy pieces of wood across
put LP12 back
and proceed.
Move the wood around to give you access is necessary.
