I agree(!), at least with Linn speakers. I have not enough experience with positioning others to give a general comment.

Re: Whither Tunedem, 2015

Hcl, is there really a conflict between your referred "methods", isn't tune method ideally a mix of technical musicianship and communicated emotion? Appreciated. Thanks! Fundamentally the two methods are both related to how the music is perceived. One could well be performed by anyone and the other...

Re: Whither Tunedem, 2015

I think the tune-method is the best somewhat universal tool we have to evaluate equipment, but there are many ways of performing it and some are more reliable than others. Focusing on how well the instruments are tuned is (in my view) much more reliable than the "Idol" (or listen and feel) version a...

Re: Exakt

This I think either: A. invalidates "source first" or tune-dem as a fully universal and objective measure for musical qulity of hifi equipment. B. Indicates that the shortcomings of the less well performing Exakt installations are due to explicit shortcomings in the Exakt installation resulting in ...

... Although these pieces all now have ExaktLink outputs, a good example of Linn making this technology more available, it is also important to note that the improved circuitry appears to benefit the analog outputs at least as much as the Exakt ones. I have been told that the KDSM/1 through Sagatun...

Re: Exakt

I did not say that the improvements to the clocking, or even to the circuit layout, did not improve the Exakt outputs. Indeed I would certainly expect they would. What I said was that the inclusion of Exakt outputs BY ITSELF would not improve the musical quality of the DS. That it was the other cha...

Re: Exakt

There are a few people, including Anthony, who have said that the KDSM/1 is more musical than the KDS/1. Yes, that seems to be the common opinion. However, the Exakt outputs appear to have nothing to do with this. On what grounds do you suggest that? Reserving myself from the possibility that my so...

Re: Exakt

I believ that most people here hold "source first" pretty high. As far as I know the new KDSM with exakt link is a step up from even the old KDS/1 (better with respect to tune dem). This is said to be owned to improvements on the digital side and more precise to the clocking design. If so I would ar...

Re: Exakt installation

I think it is pretty clear. The better the system the more it requires of all enironmental conditions and the more revealing it is regarding set-up flaws. This has been the case with all systems up to now and as Exakt offer a new level of accuracy it also require a new level of installation accuracy...

Moderation of this forum takes up on the heritage stamped out in east Germany during the cold war. Re: Exakt installation

In looking at this again it seems that there was a misreading of my original post by hcl. Nowhere did I say that I set the speakers to a precision of 1/8". I said that I was moving the speakers in 1/8' increments. This is quite different. In terms of precision of placement, which I would equate wit...

Did I say that performance would be ruined if not spot on the optimum position? Re: Exakt

I must say it's amusing to read that, according to hcl, a precision of at least 1/32 inch is required to make a speaker perform well. That's 0.79 mm. Yes, half a mm matters, but can it ruin the performance of a world class speaker? Absolutely not. On the contrary, I find that quality can be recogni...

I'm creating a new thread here for the quite specific debate about whether Exakt-systems need more careful installation than any previous known system in order to perform musically. Sorry hcl, but your arguments are simplistic. To get a better understanding, take a look at actual circuits and summarize their sources of noise. Then you will find that a large contributor is the high value resistors required for a decent input load. Those cause most balanced inputs to be signific...

... how do you come to the conclusion that balanced are more noisy? This is no conclusion of mine, it's common knowledge. Just as balanced is more effective at supressing interference, the circuits also become more noisy. I'd say that most balanced input circuits are at least 6 dB more noisy than t...

I prefer unbalanced. Both from a theoretical point of view (balanced is more noisy and there are problems associated with splitting and adding signals), from practical experiments (they always seem to loose a bit of flow compared to unbalanced) and in addition, the current best interconnect cables ...
