Re: Linn announcements 9/2018, Selekt, etc.

David, you're one of the most articulate and respected people on the hifi forums and I respect your opinion. However I think the tundra sounds far superior to an akurate 4200 and you yourself don't, so the fact that we disagree over space optimisation doesn't really surprise me. Please don't take a...

Re: Upgrading Linn DS units

I was hoping the KDS with Katalyst would be as good. Oh well, such is life! Based on one comparison, and not your own ears making it? And it's not as if price is irrelevant. The KDS upgrade to /3 (Katalyst) standard is £3,850 in the UK price list. That, together with the price of a second hand KDS ...

Re: Linn announcements 9/2018, Selekt, etc.

The SO profile for the room has fixed cuts - or at least the representation does. A 16dB cut is a 16dB cut, it's absolute, not relative. I assume they are calculated for "normal listening levels", probably a best-guess within a range of comfortable listening levels. Turn it up that much higher and ...

Re: Linn announcements 9/2018, Selekt, etc.

It's an easy comparison to make - what sounds better to you in your system is better. Quite so. SO sounds better - for me. Any thoughts (my previous post) on whether the beneficial effects of SO in your system are volume-dependent? Actually, no, because I haven't tested that point specifically, tho...

Yes davidHb, just bin it off and focus on the music. How did we ever manage before? I'm not a fan in the slightest. I may be in the minority but hey, I can live with that. I've thought a bit carefully before responding to this, and to the points Fredrik made. I am conscious that Fredrik is the host...

Bin what? Space Optimisation? If Don does that, and my experience (yes, with Tune Dem assessment) is anything to go by, his enjoyment of the music will be considerably less than with a good SO setup.

Re: Upgrading Linn DS units

I wouldn’t invest into a discontinued product but either keep it as is or sell it as soon as possible. Why not, if that gets you the product you want, at a price you find acceptable? Of course, one would want the product to have a sensible support life, but Linn's track record on that is pretty goo...

Re: Aro versus Ekos SE

AFAIK, Javelin for Aro Keel is shortly before launch. It's certainly promised. And, having heard the Javelin on demo, I can certainly confirm that it is well worth a listen. And, as I needed a ferry journey to get that demo, I would not regard a trip from Nottingham to Windsor as too far to hear th...

Re: Linn announcements 9/2018, Selekt, etc.

If there wouldn't be the sunset of the DS line I would be absolutely fine with it. Frankly, I see no need to worry. Like others who have commented, I think that you would get very good value from a Katalyst upgrade to your KDS/1. And it's not as if, in discontinuing the DS products, Linn is abandon...

Re: Upgrading Linn DS units

I agree. As I understand things the only upgrade they're stopping is DS to DSM. Katalyst update is still to be available. That's my understanding too. Mind you, if I owned a KDS I'd want to get it upgraded as soon as possible. There seems to be a strong consensus that the upgrade is very well worth...

Re: New Linn Forum

Let’s say you’ve owned a new piano for a while and it’s started to sound a “bit off” and in need of a retune. A gentleman arrives with nothing more than a special spanner and starts to fettle under the lid. You ask him where his other tools are and he tells you the only other tool he needs is betwe...

Back to spannko's point and Charlie1's demurral. I entirely agree that my approach is entirely for me. But then so also is any Tune Dem process individual to the person who engages in it. Tune Dem is a good method for working out what I prefer. But my Tune Dem results say little or nothing of certai...

After using Tune Dem for the last 30 years when evaluating everything from car stereos to digital pianos, I’m not aware of any limitations of the approach ... How would you describe the limitations as you see them? Firstly, I said "limitations", not "failings" or "disadvantages". I know of no bette...

You will also find some minor differences between Fredrik's Tune Method description here and Ivor's 'How to Judge a System' page that used to be on the Linn website, and can still be found on Internet archival services. Re: New Linn Forum

It is the limitation of the freedom of speech, and the general cordiality of the founders and members, that keeps this forum freer of the pointless types of arguments often seen on the web. Personally I find this refreshing. IMO, the mark of a good forum is that it finds a sensible balance between ...

Apparently I have to change the Akurate Exakt DSM to Akurate System Hub though! It says Akurate Exakt DSM on the front, doesn't it? :) And, having now heard the 140s with the upgraded stands in a number of different systems, I am sure they are well worth keeping. Recently, Chris of Hidden Systems s...

Re: How Different Are We?

I'm glad to have started this discussion, albeit quite accidentally. Actually, my understanding is closer to Fredrik's than he was implying, which is why I (perhaps ineptly) used the phrase "the musical performance is happening here and now". Having quoted Aristotle (whose whole purpose is to to dis...

The notice on the closed forum says that it will remain closed until mid-October. Only Linn know why the closure needs to be that long, or indeed why it was necessary at all.

I think Gilad is making the company his own. That's probably the only way it can survive anyway. If you're trying to be like someone else then that will be very unrewarding over time. I can't really imagine what it's like to run a business like that, but I'm sure I'd want to be fully engaged and ex...

Re: Does clearer lyrics = better tune?

I wouldn’t say so. I think intelligibility and tune playing are two different things. I suspect that you mean that clarity and tunefulness are two different things; if you do, I agree with you, but I think that changes the answer to the original question. In a good song, words and music are essenti...

Maybe we don't give enough credit to potential differences in the way each of us listens and experiences our music ... Thoughts? I couldn't agree more. I think it is always useful to assume that the most unreliable and unpredictable component of any H-Fi system is the one between the listener's ear...

Because of the interesting similarities and differences between the Linn and Lejonklou philosophies, I agree that this is a useful place for discussion for owners of both brands. Selekt cannot be seen as a change of market focus or as an abandonment of enthusiast customers. Correct, Selekt cannot be seen as a change of market focus - as the abandonment of enthusiast customers happened many years earlier. I'm not sure how you reach that conclusion. If Urika II and Lingo 4 (b...

Wait on Linn if you Selekt; a good few of us have already elected not to do so. There's room for both approaches,...
