Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Not digging these latest clips - they all sound a bit soulless to me... Not sure if that's the 12 when I preferred the 32, or just the Naim sound coming through more... I prefer 160 vs 110, and with the hicap, just, over without but I'm not really getting the music with either(s). Are these as well ...

Re: Possible Upgrade

Additionally, depending on what you are looking to achieve, you could look at system setup to make sure you are getting the best from your current components, particularly speaker positioning, network, NAS, and ripping solutions, and what supports your system... You can also get a surprising boost i...

Re: Mixing things up.. non Linn speakers?

From personal experience with 4200 and Spendors, not ProAcs, it's definitely worth trying, even if it's only with factory jumpers... Biamped sounded bigger, but single amped, single wired, was unquestionably more musical in my system at the time. Easy to try; easy to put back if you don't think it w...

Rip it up & start again - recommendations?

Old setup: Old, old Win XP desktop & iTunes to ReadyNAS Duo (HDDs) over CIFS; copy to 'new Debian LS-NAS' (Ext4 SSD) over NFS Options for new setup: 1. old WIn desktop & iTunes to 'new Debian LS-NAS' over CIFS - NAS library SSD* (re)formatted to NTFS 2a. new Debian desktop reconfigured to allow Win7...

Makes sense... Better to trust Debian with NTFS than Windows with Ext4. (no more questions ;) Cheers.

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

I thought of another question... (apologies if it has already been asked/answered) What do you do for your library drive file formatting: is it/are they NTFS (for Win) or Ext4 (for Debian), and do you use a Linux tool such as ntfs-3g to read/copy from NTFS, or did you find a reliable tool to write f...

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

Didn't compare Win 7 & 10. I seem to remember someone reporting that Win 10 was an improvement, and my Win 7 installation was old and cranky.... so rather than reinstall the old one (when I couldn't find the licence key) I coughed up for Win 10. And I didn't compare with XP either... when you're ob...

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

Elegant way of doing it. I have a Win7 license & spare SSD I might be able to reuse to convert the desktop, or NAS, into a ripping station as & when. I guess NAS would be better as Microsoft significantly curtailed support for NFS, so I'd have to find another way to transfer rips between boxes... Di...

Re: Lejonklou Demo in nyc

I was thinking about visiting that store when I heard they had a Boazu on demo and also stocked Spendors (& Harbeths) - at the time I was interested in hearing the Spendor D9s with Lejonklou electronics. The store is by appointment so I sent an e-mail enquiry... The response was something to the eff...

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

Thanks for sharing. Just curious, do you rip from iTunes on IOS, or on Windows? Also, what version of iTunes are you using? I'd have to check which version I went with, but I know it was an older one because I was still running XP on the desktop used for ripping... I then built a new desktop at the ...

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

Thanks 'julio. I'm going to go with the maxim: "if it ain't broke don't fix it", and stick with 1.4.0-2. My Hakai sounds good enough that the missus sat there listening & singing along - always a good sign, if not a good sound ;) I put on Pink Floyd DSotM, Time to signal time's up on the listening s...

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

Did you revert to libupnpp 0.16 at the same time as rolling back to upmpdcli 1.3.8, or is that still on 0.17 (or higher)?

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

Thanks, that's interesting. I didn't think to check beforehand but, depending on exactly when I built/finished building the Hakai, it may have been 'last days' of 1.3.8 or first of 1.4.0... There are some potentially handy(?) fixes in 1.4.0, and a dependency on libupnpp 0.17 making upmpdcli incompat...

upmpdcli: latest version?

MPD 0.21.11-1 is a good 'un! Checking versions, my Hakai is on upmpdcli 1.4.0-2. Despite lesbonscomptes reporting the release 1.4.2 as the latest, running update followed by either upgrade or install upmpdcli doesn't result in a later version than 1.4.0-2 being installed... assuming the apt-cache po...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

You're welcome. It's fun following along on your old gear odyssey to find the music. Thanks for sharing. Just a thought, since I could relate to your comment about Naim: have you tried a Tundra in your system? To me, Fredrick's boxes are somewhere between Naim & Linn: less overtly warm than Linn; le...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Certainly doesn't come across in the clip, and I have felt aurally pinned to a wall by Naim amps before so know what you mean by "that full on in your face relentless Naim sound" :/ If anything, the 12S came across more like that due to the relative lack of musicality... The 12S had similar sound to...

Re: Why music is important to us

And yet the best thing to do with an equalizer (in the replay system) other than to remove or bypass it, is to set it 'flat'* ;) Or, as a local coffeehouse says: "filter coffee, not people" ... or music :)

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

B here too. For me it's upright vs grand -A sounds ok until you listen to B, then you realise that A is (more than) a bit one dimensional. A just presents the main note that's struck whereas B includes the other notes in the chord and resonances that makes it sound like a real piano, piece, and perf...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Please tell me that is Rod Stewart and not the speakers making another singer(?) sound like him... Between his voice, the Nait, and the speakers, that makes for a harsh listen, with a nasty aggressiveness to the speakers as if they have Royd rage ;)

So much for wandering about the Minstrels :)
