Re: Linux Kernels

Those of you running Debian (Buster) / Hakai, do you update / upgrade your OS regularly? If so, have you installed the latest kernel? Or do you leave well alone if it works? Curious if you've upgraded and noticed a change in musicality for better or worse... Those using SnakeOil presumably get upda...

Does a better system make you want to hear the same album less often?

[New topic, split from the topic 'Karousel'] One thing that is very seldom referred to here is the communication of the replay system. I have a hunch that the better the system is at communicating the music the less you'll want to listen to that particular album. Could this be construed as boring-s...

Karousel is in Val's tailwind.
At the moment I am preferring the Karousel , seems to have a better groove about it , all be it a very laid back one

Re: Karousel

Well, I carried out an A v B dem at Loud and Clear Glasgow. Identical Akurate spec decks except Akito arm and Krystal changed to AO PU7 and DV cart on both. 3 month old Cirkus on one and 3 month Karousel on the other, both with similar hours on them. Super decks by the way. First observation is the...

Initial listening, the bass appears to be more nimble and less laborious going from 10 hrs to 150hrs

Under non-Covid conditions I'd like to have a pint and watch Lego and Math list the bass players and drummers they know :-)
That's not going to happen 😁

Re: What is an adequate replacement for the briks?

I'd just move to Glasgow and buy a large tenement flat.Early Linn speakers were designed to be played in a room that had 4 proper walls, preferably with at least a 3 foot thick wall behind Briks ,not even sure about windows 😁 There's something very satisfying about a contributor called "Lego" contr...

Re: Recording Bass Guitar

In my humble opinion, you're not supposed to notice the bass until it stops playing. A wee side note, just before Chic's Bernard Edwards died he was playing live on stage and was intermittently having blackouts. Nile Rodgers was totally unaware as he said the gaps in the bass were always in time so...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

FairPlayMotty, do you have a link to that piece by Martin Colloms? My ears don't allow me to be boxed in by a philosophy of listening. It's important to know that the Tune Method is not a philosophy of listening. It's only a method of evaluation; which is better, A or B? One thing I like about the ...

Re: Mains improvement, after the wall socket

Back in the early days when I got my first hifi,I had a Rega 3 Nad 3020 plugged into a 6 way strip. After a couple of weeks I decided to try plugging them into a single block, thinking no wires directly plugged into wall,it must sound better, There was a clear sound improvement, ie better, clearer an...

Have you tried listening with different amplifiers Fredrik 😁 No. What are your thoughts on this, Lego? What amplifier do you think is needed? I have only heard clips and I always thought Karousel sounded worse rather than not much in it.I must admit I've never been charmed in demos by any Lp12 upgr...

Re: Random thoughts on Supertramp and hifi

Coincidently, I've been getting into 'Crisis, What Crisis?' quite a lot the past couple of weeks. Good album. One of their albums I never got around to listen to. I am changing that now! :-) I love listening to albums recorded in the seventies. They have so much “life” in their sound and music. Tha...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

+1 Yes, I think I prefer them in general to 80s recordings, even the ones that seem all analogue. 60s original pressings often sound a bit brash to me, especially rock/pop. The reissues in 70s and 80s often sound more paletable, albeit less tuneful. And of course the 50s jazz stuff on blue note etc...

I believe it was the NAC 552. And Linn certainly did highly endorse using the LP12 and Isobariks, SARAs and Kans with Naim electronics...until they came out with their own!
Sorry Thomas it was the 52 I was referring to, not the 552 which is a later preamp

Indeed Thomas thanks .I was hoping that there was one out there that bucked the trend .I think I'll just go back to the T copper wire as I remember it having quite a nice warm musical sound though very hissy. Probably a farewell session .

Re: Magnum Dynalab Antenna and Ekos/1

Last week I was finally able to install the new MD ST-2 antenna, and it's a really great improvement over the previous antenna. The signals are much stronger, and the back ground noise is much lower as well. And needless to say, listening to FM frequencies isn't as unpleasant now. Voices are more n...

Re: Brikin' It !

Thanks Tony. Nice to know it's not always a 100% knockout for everyone and there are shades of grey, albeit differing shades between us. Also you've got to remember Charlie1 you're listening to an LP12 with Naim amps, something Linn would never ever endorse. Maybe you need an Aro 😁 Although I remem...
