Re: Possible Upgrade

Linn claims that a KDSM produces a better sound than a KDS in conjunction with a KK as it has an incorporated preamp, so what exactly are the concerns about losing the preamp component of the Boazu? Peter, there are two answers here, the first is that Linn seem currently to be prioritising sound ov...

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

Didn't compare Win 7 & 10. I seem to remember someone reporting that Win 10 was an improvement, and my Win 7 installation was old and cranky.... so rather than reinstall the old one (when I couldn't find the licence key) I coughed up for Win 10. And I didn't compare with XP either... when you're obs...

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

Current (whatever was the available download a few weeks ago) version of iTunes under Windows 10. When ripping was finished, I removed the Win 10 SSD, installed the Debian 9 SSD, and disconnected the optical drive. So a switch between ripper and server takes less than five minutes including the fidd...

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

A quick postscript with my ripping completed - I had fewer CDs than I thought. The improvement in ripping quality has made it much clearer that after reconfiguring the LSNAS back to a dedicated server, Debian 9 is an improvement on Windows 7 or 10. Likewise the LSNAS outperforms a HakaiNAS, both run...

Re: Next Upgrade

You have to decide how to allocate your money depending on how well your current products are serving you. But I would agree that long term you would be better served by an ADSM with Katalyst into a Tundra amp and whichever of the two speakers best suits you. Even better would be the ADSM with inte...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I didn't say this was a comparison between rips. Although A is newly ripped..... I was listening to A, and feeling pretty pleased with myself that the new rips sounded rather good, when I remembered that I also have this album on vinyl. The digital recording is by ECM. A is the iTunes rip on my LSNA...

Re: Cheap power strips for best sound.

I gave a 6-way one to a fellow forum member but it has a longer cable - 3m as I recall. I think he may have found a much more expensive alternative though - not sure if he stuck with it or not. I'm still using it, thank you, and I think it's 2m. I did go down a very deep and dark rabbit-hole trying...

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

This summary is copied from the playground thread. If you go to that thread, the relevant pages are 67-69. I think it needs to be here as well: Yes, I prefer iTunes/ALAC: to dbPoweramp/FLAC by a long way; to EAC/FLAC by a lesser margin; and also to JRiver/ALAC by a smaller margin still. I used error...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Yes, the previous single track comparison had B as the uncorrected version. This time it was A. Yes, I prefer iTunes/ALAC: to dbPoweramp/FLAC by a long way; to EAC/FLAC by a lesser margin; and also to JRiver/ALAC by a smaller margin still. I used error correction/secure mode/slow mode (as recommende...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I'm using Samsung Note 9. I think the only mic is on the bottom edge, hence pointing that towards the speakers. I have to disagree with beck this time - surprisingly because he identified my favourite on the single track where I was only 99% sure of which way round! But low-level info gets sacrifice...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Here are some different tracks. The black video content is deliberate - the phone is resting camera down on an armrest, to minimise any problems with holding it steady. A and B remain the same throughout, to make life simpler. Preferences? Track 1 A: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yus0d539vrivjb2/2019073...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I'm not absolutely sure I know which of the last pair if clips is which! Having both tracks available to the control point simultaneously meant that I introduced a chance of confusion. (This applies only to the last pair of clips, where I shortcut my usual comparison process.) So before revealing wh...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I think I would go with B (based on the third track), there you're upfront at the stage. On A you're further back and it's not so intimate. I feel the same, but I'm not 100% convinced that everything's better with B. There's something a little rushed and detail-oriented about it. A on the other han...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

This is the result of my ripping exercise: the only difference between this pair of clips is the ripping software. One is iTunes, the other is JRiver, both using ALAC. The LSNAS is optimised back to being a server, the files come from different directories on the same SSD. Track 1: A: https://www.dr...

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

I'm 158 albums into my ripping project, and now JRiver is recommended instead of iTunes! JRiver is interesting because it's available for Linux (Debian), which I've previously found to be slightly better than Win7 as a server OS. So it could suit me well, apart from the metadata, to use JRiver. (May...

I've never tried ALAC (or iTunes). Could you share some examples?
Sorry, but all spare time will be going into the ripping for a while. In any case, you're far better off trying it for yourself. It's free, and then you'll know if it works for you.

Re: Optimum ripping solutions

I don't want to go over the top about this, but.... First, a caveat: the dbPoweramp files I have compared were ripped over the last two years, the EAC files last year, and all using Win7. The iTunes rips were done with Win10. The positioning and support of the LSNAS has changed (as has my home) - so...
