Re: Linn versus Naim amps

Yep. I like clear well recorded music too. I just wouldn't recognise if the cello sounded right or not. Agreed. That’s a typical audiophile problem. Usually, we’ve no idea what something should sound like, so when it comes to the sound element I work on the principle that the sound only has to be g...

Re: Linn versus Naim amps

But what about the natural sound of the instruments? If it were only about melody, rhythm and timing, we would not need the many different instruments with their characteristic sound (colours). Must admit Eli7 that I'm not really bothered about this element of replay, but I don't listen to much cla...

. It took me a little while to realise HiFi is almost a term of abuse on here Quite right Motley. I think it’s time we made a stand. So ….. “Hello. My names spannko. I’m an audiophile” There, I’ve said it and ….. Wow! It feels so good to come out! I should have done it a long time ago! To be honest...

Gosh, yes. I forgot Henri was ripping it up down your way. I hope everyone who’s effected by the storms are OK 🤞 To take your mind off what’s going on in this crazy new world of ours for a couple of minutes, here’s a direct comparison between Henri (the power supply!) and the standard Netgear poweri...

The playground has been fairly quiet recently, so here’s a little something to keep you going. It’s my diy power supply powering a Netgear GS108T and some other stuff which you don’t need to worry your pretty little heads about right now 🤣 https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B1259UlCqHn2Trh Enjoy!

Re: Linn versus Naim amps

Too detailed I don't understand the concept of, "too detailed". Watch YouTube videos of the best studio professionals and you'll quickly realise that much information from the performance is lost before the master tapes are complete. From a source first POV too detailed makes no sense to me. The cl...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

Good question! I think the safest answer is to say I don’t know! Maybe we could set up a series of tests comparing one component with another and see if any patterns emerge? But I agree with Fredrik’s view that it helps enormously if we can relate to the piece we’re listening to. For me, modern cla...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

So, our western ideas of pitch relationships and harmony don’t help us to assess a components ability to be pitch accurate when using music which doesn’t conform to our musical model. The models aren’t better or worse than one another, they’re just different. If you're just trying to follow the mus...

This should be an advantage for the tune method.

Matt
By “alien”, I mean that the pitch relationships are not what we’ve become accustomed to; they do not align with our internalised western model of harmony.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

What part of the quote applies to component tunefulness assessment using music from other cultures? None, specifically. It requires a bit of extrapolation. “ Western music is also the only flavor that contains true harmony, which we developed roughly from 1400 to 1600 and expanded on thereafter. Wh...
