Re: Optimal House Wiring

Can someone let me know what kind of cable is used for final power circuits in Europe please. It looks like it might be 2.5mm NYM-J cable, protected with a 16A type C RCD, but it would be good to know for sure before I ask Sparky to source some for me. NYM-J is like a cross between a T&E and a flex....

Re: Optimal House Wiring

It’s time to reveal the results ............... (drum roll) ........ ! Fortunately, as it happened, socket 1/direction 1 remained ‘A’ throughout the test and socket 2/direction 2 remained B, which makes explaining the results a bit easier. Test 1 returned a mixture of A & B being preferred, but I th...

Re: Ring main direction test

Here’s the first of the ring main tests I said I would carry out for everyone. The ring is 25m in length, with a socket inserted 7m along each leg. Only the socket position changes, everything else is identical. The directions (A or B) can be seen clearly on the videos. TEST 1 https://www.dropbox.c...

Re: Amplification options

Peter, Don’t forget “source first”! Upgrading your KRDS/1 to a KRDS/2 for about £1k will definitely give you the most musical upgrade for the lowest cost. Then, when you have added a good musical equipment support (eg Isoblue) and you have checked that you have a musical power supply, you can start ...

Re: Optimal House Wiring

OK chaps, we’re on the last leg now. Only one more A or B decision to make, then I’ll reveal the results first thing Monday morning. The reason for another set of sound clips is because we still don’t have a significant majority preference for one or the other, so it would be great if you could list...

Re: Optimal House Wiring

I’ve done some more recordings, but just for fun I’ve added a little twist! Everything is exactly the same except I tossed a coin for the naming of the cables (A & B). TEST 2 https://www.dropbox.com/sh/c3a8a5zq1gbvrji/AAA7WxLvyMYIuTHexzZI_hTGa?dl=0 I've struggled this time. Droxbox is constantly dr...

Re: Optimal House Wiring

Thanks for your input tokenbrit. There’s a couple of slight problems with describing the text direction. One is that the text direction for best sound could change from batch to batch. Secondly, if you imagine your drawing flipped horizontally, the text will read in the opposite direction! We could ...

Re: Optimal House Wiring

Hey Spannko, thanks for posting. I agree with others here with regards preferred direction for musicality. One quick question: when you are changing cable direction are you keeping all 3 sections oriented consistently with each other? If you can imagine the two ends being joined together at the con...

I much prefer A. I Am Kloot? I think your setup is looking a bit cluttered though. Can't swing a cat for all those HiFi components, racks of CDs and walls of vinyl. No, of course, it's looking very good - how life has changed for you digital fans. I do like those speakers. Can't beat that new-carpe...

Re: Adventures in Hi-fi, it's electrifying

Just spoken to Sparks and he’s agreed to temporarily fit a ring with one 7m leg and one 18m leg. We’ll listen for directionality, then reduce the long leg down to 7m in 0.5m increments. It’ll be interesting to see what emerges. Dedication to the task! I love it. It does sound pretty cool, but I hop...

Re: Adventures in Hi-fi, it's electrifying

Hey How you getting on? R. Not very well, I’m afraid! What I thought would be a simple task has turned out to be quite involved. I’ve realised that my ring and radial differ by more than just the wiring topology. That is, 1) The consumer units, 2) The breaker manufacturers and, 3) The power socket ...

Just rounding off this thread. I sense something has nudged up the engagement factor the past 2-3 weeks. Could this be final burn in on the Tundra? Work has been busier than ever and so I've not listened much, but when i do it is pressing all the right buttons :) It could be an exhilarating short L...

Re: Now DSD128 with Klimax Katalyst

Very fond of 4.61.196 (better timing), first change since 4.56.173. I’ve given 61.196 a good listening and I still have a preference for 59.185. I find that 59.185 has a magical quality which reminds me of the best turntables. How do you feel about giving 59.185 another go? It could be a system dep...

Re: Now DSD128 with Klimax Katalyst

Ahh, I haven’t tried that one yet. I tried 55.172 (which I didn’t like) and missed 55.173. I thought 60.193 was ok but not as good as 59.185. At this point (after comparing different firmwares for several hours) I lost the will to live and went back to 58.185. I’m loading up 61.196 just now; I’ll le...

Re: Now DSD128 with Klimax Katalyst

Has anyone tried 4.59.185? I find it slightly preferable to my earlier favourites like 4.53.125 and 4.54.135 which both sound slightly “pitchy” in comparison.

However, I would say that all three are more musical than any of Linns latest offerings, sadly!

Re: asking for upgrade advice

I say “blinkered” because the conversation is more about what has been (and why things work, or don’t) rather than what could be. Ok, you prefer to look forward. I like that, but it's more speculative, don't you think? In general we have to try things to get an idea of how far a route can take us. ...

Re: Adventures in Hi-fi, it's electrifying

I’ve been experimenting with the mains supply for years and, due mainly to a lack of a truly rigorous approach, I’m still non the wiser! I’ve tried a 4mm twin & earth radial, which I thought was OK. It was nearly 30 years ago, so I can’t remember what, or if, I compared it against, so a bit useless ...
