Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

This is one of those times I wonder if the first playing of clips doesn't have a problem. When I first listened to Clip 1 I thought something was wrong. Then I listened to Clip 2 and thought it was better. Then I listened to Clip 2 and Clip 1 a second time, in that reverse order, and preferred Clip...

Re: Exakt

.If Linn has truely left the concept of tune dem and source first behind I fear they will sooner or later run out of rope (I do not believe they have). Whether Linn have abandoned Tune Dem, or not, isn’t an easy question to answer. Actually it’s easy to answer. They removed TD from their homepage. ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I’ve just remembered that detecting inharmonicity “appears” to be an innate sense. It’s something nearly everyone can do from an early age, but it’s not yet known if we are born with the ability or we learn it very quickly. It may also be a consequence of the way our inner ear works. I think it’s p...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Well done, beck! Your CD player sounds really good. Re: “disharmonic vibration”. I agree, and would say that inharmonicity is at the root of ALL poorly performing systems. I’d even go further and say that harmonicity is essential for life! Without harmonicity, there is nothing (ie pre Big Bang), and...

Re: How to learn tunedem?

Well done LinnJim. TuneDem isn’t easy, and even after many years of practicing I’m no expert and still sometimes get it wrong. Fortunately, the error soon makes itself known, which is a reminder to do it again. Your technique of “focus without focusing” is a great one, and much more like how we list...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Normally I will always choose the more musical as to me this means better timing , flow and foot tapping and emotion. ..... to my ears there is something lost in that the backing musicians/instruments are over dominant and relegating the vocals to the background, even though everything is in tune, ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Since I’m the only person to prefer 1, I thought I’d have another listen.

I’m sticking with 1, cos while 2 does the HiFi stuff ok, it just sounds too musically incoherent to my ears.

Re: Quality digital music: Do You Buy or Rent?

I have recently gone from buying to renting with Quobuz. I used to use an off the shelf NAS drive / ripper and good ones cost around £1000 . I would guess at a shelf life of around 5 years and potential intermittent reliability /IT issues - my Rip Nas went to the dealer every 2 to three years and f...

Re: English Electric 8Switch (Audiophile Network Switch)

I’ve only just noticed that Martin Colloms tried the 8Switch in two positions - next to the router and next to the HiFi. He didn’t like the 8Switch with a short cable back to the router, describing the sound in a similar way to those of us who heard it at the Bristol show (which I think was also wir...

Re: Briks missing bass

Mhh... You mean lay another cable to the plant, through a reinforced concrete ceiling and two walls? That's simply not possible. When the setup was finished like in the picture, I tested some power strips, so only one plug was used. But I'm not sure if this is what you recommend. Not really. Just l...

Re: Briks missing bass

My recommendation would be to install a simple, but musical, single cable 6mm2 radial, checked for direction, as recommended by Naim, RtM, Fredrik Ethernet al. Then live with it for at least a month before going back to your current setup.

Re: Briks missing bass

As I am a professional, of course the AC range is the first thing I worked on. It is a 5x10qmm soldered directly into a power block. The wires are connected in a way that there is no "hirarchy". Two times plus and two times minus are connected in a way that they are soldered from both sides of the ...

Re: English Electric 8Switch (Audiophile Network Switch)

Martin Colloms has given the 8Switch a good review for all the reasons that those on Lejonklou who have heard it, felt it was lacking. MC usually treads a good line between musicality and fidelity and describes them both impartially. Very confusing!

Re: Optimal House Wiring

I’ve compared power strips to hydras in the past V.A.MKD, and preferred hydras at the time, but because star wiring/earthing hasn’t been totally successful in the DIY Netgear power supply I’ve been playing with recently, I’m not 100% sure hydras are the way to go with power distribution now. Experim...

Re: Optimal House Wiring

I’ve just noticed that I haven’t updated my house wiring experiments since November 2018! It’s been so long, I can’t remember exactly how I got to where I am now, so I’ll just describe the setup that I’ve finally settled on. 11m of Prysmian 6mm2 Twin & Earth mains cable The Prysmian cable is a stand...

Re: Best sounding LAN cable for DS

They’re £80 for a 3m length. I’ve got three of them for about the same price of a pair of Linn Silver interconnects. I’d say they bring about a greater improvement in musicality than the Silvers, so that makes them pretty good value for money as far as I’m concerned.

Re: Best sounding LAN cable for DS

I posted a couple of videos comparing the bjc to the Meicord and everyone preferred the Meicord.

It can be bought for about £80 in the UK, with the option to return it within 30 days if it’s found to be unsuitable.
