Re: Random thoughts on hifi

I think you’re bang on there Don!

I’d love to set up my system so that I can sit 5 rows back too. Unfortunately, my listening room is about 4 rows too short 😂

Re: Hierarchy within the speaker

It seems mostly anything can sound great if the designer knows what he/she's doing and takes the time to listen and fine-tune everything. I think you’re right WMN. For every “rule” there will be an exception, which reminds me, there’s only one rule: there are no rules! Only one thing takes preceden...

Re: Hierarchy within the speaker

There’s no doubt that it’s important for the cabinet and drive units to work together harmoniously. But more important than the x/o ? If we follow the path of the signal, the x/o has to be more important than the drive unit/cabinet. Not more expensive necessarily, but if musical information is lost ...

I suspect the cabinet is possibly more fundamental than the crossover and possibly is on a par with or before the drive unit.
I’ve not heard of anyone saying this about a cabinet before. What makes you think so, sunbeam?

Re: Hierarchy within the speaker

Yes, I forgot to mention, all of the modern full range HiFi speakers I’ve heard have been awful too - the ones with a 6-8” paper cone and a paper “whizzer” in the middle. Musically, they’ve all been worse than my little Logitech jobbies, but they go a LOT louder. The principle obviously works, cos e...

Re: Hierarchy within the speaker

I’ve got a pair of computer speakers which are very simple and cheap as chips. They’ve got just one 40mm aluminium drive unit and amplifier in each ported enclosure and I think they sound way better than they have any right to for only £15 and I’ve often wondered if they would make the ultimate flat...

Re Exakt.

Are you guys referring to Exakt, Space Optimisation, or both?

The reason I ask is because people sometimes think they’re all the same thing.

Ah! I forgot that you’ve already compared the catsnake to the microconnect. I know nearly everyone preferred the microconnect, but I found them very close, with a slight preference for the catsnake. However, I agree with everyone that the bjc is quite a bit better than the microconnect, so it looks ...

I suppose the bottom line is that without a frame of reference, all we end up with is random noise.

I absolutely agree. I’d rather have a tuneful supermarket HiFi for €100 than anything else, at any price, that can’t bang out a tune.

As I’ve described previously, an uncontrolled test of this kind is likely to produce a split decision.

Re: Hakai Vs £55 PC SB RESULTS RECOUNT !!! (UPDATE)

These results are seriously disconcerting. Not even a consensus in the individual comparisons. Not necessarily. As I’ve described previously, an uncontrolled test of this kind is likely to produce a split decision. Floyd Toole has done a lot of research on this. His recommendation for overcoming th...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

Sorry beck, I’m still struggling to understand your Danglish blanding 😉 What I think you’re saying is that flow and the feeling of musical timing is most important, then you’d prefer a fist on the nose to one at a distance. However, if you can’t have it on your nose, any distance will do so long as ...

I think I’m with you here beck, although I do feel that some digital systems can replace the flesh on the bones! ☠️☠️☠️ Forgive me if I’m wrong, but you seem to be describing the “sound” and “impact” of a system, and that although the presentation may change, what’s presented can still be called “mu...

My point is that without a frame of reference, your decision that they sound as good as one another only applies to you. It’s possible that someone will “agree” with you, but for totally different reasons. In that case, the “agreement” is merely a coincidence. With a frame of reference, any agreemen...

Re: Hakai Vs £55 PC

The downside of closed voting is that the results will tend to aggregate around the mean From a statistical or musical point of view I don't understand how that would work. In this example I believe the results were close because all of the clips were close in audio quality. I agree it's desirable ...

To be fair I only asked what do you prefer, maybe 'and why' should be added .To go from 95% in favour of one clip to very close to 50/50 in a secret ballot says a lot for me. The clips here have come a long way from this product A and this is product B which one do you prefer, which was happening a l...
