Re: Musical NAS Drives

Thanks sunbeam. I’m hoping that by sharing our experiences we can come to some conclusions about just what’s happening and why people are getting different results. Like you I’ve been streaming music for a number of years and never found it engaging. It was ok for checking out new releases, but that...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Sorry Thomas, this test has gone totally hooters up. I removed my geotagging metadata, but the app removed all my timing metadata too, which I didn’t notice at the time, so we’ve no way of knowing what you’re actually listening to.

I’ll re-record the clips, but with labels next to the HiFi next time.

Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E

I don’t know if it’s me or you Thomas, but but I didn’t understand a word of that. One of us has been on the NYE sauce, and since its a about midday your side of the pond, the chances are that it’s not you. OTOH, it could be both of us, he hic he!

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

That’s great, thanks charlie1. I didn’t say anything before now cos I thought you’d all gone Mutton Jeff! :-) I agree, the 108 is much better than the Cisco. Actually, I think the Cisco is really poor. It’s got a nice sound (clear and tight) but it totally messes the music up and jeeeezzzzzzz, is it...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Sorry gents, it looks like the technology gremlins have been playing tricks with us again! The GS108 clips were recorded first, followed by the Cisco, but I think they’ve been presented in reverse order. So it looks like the first clip is the Cisco (you’ll know this cos I zoom in on the Cisco), foll...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I’ve found my GS108T - it’s being used as the home hub/switch! I thought it might have been an FS108. Anyway, I exchanged the 108T for the 108, expecting the 108T on the HiFi to be much better, but I’m sure it was better with the 108T as the home hub - so much for expectation bias! Maybe source firs...

Re: Musical NAS Drives

Since taking the Melco off the hifi’s power circuit I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Qobuz too, and that’s just in 320k. NAS’s are so last year!

Netgear v Cisco Network Switch

By popular demand, here’s a comparison between the Netgear GS108v3 (with the standard supplied PS) and the Cisco 2960 8TC-L. The source is Qobuz at 320kB/s through a standard Virgin modem/router, through 10m of Cat5 into a Netgear 108 with all 8 ports in use (I’ll check the exact model tomorrow), th...

Re: Musical NAS Drives

You don’t need a Zen Mini 3 to try Tidal! Just set it up in Kazoo and save your money. +1 It’s very easy and it’s much more convenient to use Kazoo too. I’m just getting all the parts together to set up a comparison between the Netgear GS108T, the Cisco and the Melco, all used just to “clean up/rea...

Even though the first clips are much louder than the second clips (which would usually give the first clips an advantage), I preferred the second clips.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I think I can hear why you like the third one beck, for me, it seems the most musical too.

Blu Tack on your mains cables? That sounds interesting and something I’ve not heard of before. So what’s your secret then ? ;-)

Re: Musical NAS Drives

I think Anthony may have opened a can of worms here (hear?). I’ve been listening to Qobuz 320k this afternoon, with and without the Melco in circuit. I need to do more experiments, complete with videos, but my initial thoughts are that the Melco is having a slight adverse musical affect on the syste...

Re: Musical NAS Drives

Ha ha! 3 answers and 3 different options. It must be a first for the forum :-) In the new year, I’m going to be looking to upgrade my Melco NAS too. I’ve not done any Direct comparisons yet, but I’ll be making sure I have a good listen before I buy. I’m prepared to go up to the Melco N10 (which I’v...

Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E

Great stuff Ron. Going by yours and charlie1’s descriptions of the AT95 series, I’ll guess that the first one is the C stylus, and the second clip is of one of the more ‘expensive’ styli? The first one sounds rough and ready to rock, whereas the second one is more refined and ready to waltz :-) It ...

First clip was great for me. I got a sense that the system was getting all the fundamentals right ie timing and tune/harmonicity sounded really nice. Clip 2 felt a bit of a car crash!

Yeah, that’s what I’ve thought. It’s more a case of what’s been, rather than what’s possible.
