Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Beck Your CD sounds really good - obviously not up to your Sondek level of musicality and engagement but pretty amazing nevertheless. Its a shame you don't have a streaming device to compare to this - I suspect you would need a pretty well optimised network and good streamer to get significantly bet...

Re: Karousel

I’m no musician - I just hear the timing issues of the Majik deck as not as musical or as engaging as the Valhalla.

I am hearing this issue on most ( if not all ) of the Karousel clips posted to date on the Forum.

Re: Karousel

I have listened to Karousel and Cirkus’d Majik and Akkurate decks in demos at two Linn dealers , with multiple AAB comparisons . I was amazed at how impressive the sound was with Karousel but preferred the flow and timing of the Cirkus decks, which made my feet tap. With the clips, it is difficult t...

Re: English Electric 8Switch (Audiophile Network Switch)

In the Digital world - everything matters. It can be total nightmare to get right at times, but when you get there it is very enjoyable and wothwhile. The switch is important and a safe and a good and inexpensive place to start is the Netgear GS 108. Lots of advice on the Forum regarding choice of C...

Re: Exakt

Unfortunately some of these upgrades are not optional ( Karousel being one example)and what is the 'best thing since sliced bread' for the many becomes a retrograde step musically for the few. There is also a definite move to removing many of the options for analogue preamp/'single wire passive' peo...

Re: Quality digital music: Do You Buy or Rent?

Spotify family at £15 a month for 6 users is great value and the music is quite musical ( I preferred to Tidal but not to Quobuz) But on my devices the software ( which is otherwise great) only seems to connect to one or two of my Four Linn streamers and it is very frustating So this week I regretfu...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I also preferred 1, accepting that 2 is more musical ( and with better Hi Fi). Listening to the second track For the first time I do prefer 2, Going back to Amy Duncan a couple of times now, I find that not only do I get used to and appreciate the better HIFI, but now it does not interfere with the...

Re: Quality digital music: Do You Buy or Rent?

My suggestion to spring wood64 is to try Spotify, Tidal and Quobuz in turn and see what you think. There are free subscriptions usually available for all three from anything from one month to three months. Then work out the annual cost of a good NAS drive, and buying music. I trialled all three stre...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I also preferred 1, accepting that 2 is more musical ( and with better Hi Fi). Normally I will always choose the more musical as to me this means better timing , flow and foot tapping and emotion. Often when the Hi Fi elements are better this is at the expense of musicality and choosing is a no brai...

Re: Quality digital music: Do You Buy or Rent?

I have recently gone from buying to renting with Quobuz. I used to use an off the shelf NAS drive / ripper and good ones cost around £1000 . I would guess at a shelf life of around 5 years and potential intermittent reliability /IT issues - my Rip Nas went to the dealer every 2 to three years and fi...

I prefer 2 on both. More Hi-Fi but more musical as well, moves better.
I agree on both counts but prefer to listen to Amy Duncan on 1 . Something about the Hi Fi sounds , as good as they are seem to get in the way of me enjoying the song - even though it flows better with more emotion.

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

With Amy Duncan - I prefer 1.

Am not listening to the second artist yet as my psychology book tells me that if I do, I will be subject to confirmation bias.

Will have to wait until I have fotgotten which one I preferred with Amy Duncan.

Re: Karousel

I’ve been on and off the fence so many times I’ve got blisters! I’m not sure if you have listened to a live demo - but I suspect that if you did, the differences between the two bearings are so huge, that you will literally jump off that fence, as quickly as if it were an electric one. As to which ...

Re: Karousel

This is also my impression with the two demos I have heard - one comparing Akkurate decks and one with Majik decks. Both had identical decks apart from the bearing. The trade off between Hi Fi and ‘musicality’ is not for me however even though the improvement in Hi Fi is of such great magnitude as t...

2 flows better , but there is quite a bit of 3 which Runs it close.

Maybe a couple of different tacks would help ?

Re: Slipsik 7

I will certainly have a think about this and pm you later today.

Slipsik 6.1 Was a huge improvement over my Gaio 1 - and v 7 is another big step up,

I think a good phonostage really makes a great turntable sing - it may be at the end of the Turntable hierarchy but boy does it make a difference.

Listening to option 2 I relax and enjoy the music.
Agreed - option 1 has nice sounds but option 2 is much more musical.

Is it just me or is this is quite a common finding with comparisons .

One option has impressive sounds but the other has better musicality and is more enjoyable.

Here are four new clips that I find interesting. They have nothing to do with the Karousel (except that it was obviously used) but are another small change in the system. Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I think no 2 is clearly better. No 1 seems more like playing the same notes a the time. The chord changes and melody is much more easily perceived in no 2. Interesting! I previously listened to the first track only. Now I just had to listen to them both. In the first track I can't really hear what ...

I agree with everyone - no 1 is better and by some margin.

If this is original vs another modified PSU, I would guess original is no 1

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I had another listen - and compared numerous times on my iPhone 6 I still prefer old - it sounds good with a natural flow and rhythm and had nothing to upset this. The new modified psu clip does actually have a good flow, and with more emotion perhaps. But there is something very strange in the back...
