Re: Cobra Dave’s system

Obvious to me, given stated desire to keep your Axis for a couple of years yet, would be the phono stage, probably Slipsik in readiness, with a new VM95 stylus as a maintenance item. Otherwise keep enjoying the music, and saving for that LP12 when you're ready to upgrade from the Axis ;) Find the ri...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I wasn't keen on the Fazioli either, but the pianist certainly liked it... Watching & listening on the tv I thought the Steinway sounded just a little delicate; I preferred the weight of the Bösendorfer - thankfully nothing like Bose. Nice to have options, if not both Steinway & Bösendorfer for diff...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Shouldn't that be like speakers: the other grands should rolled out of the room so they don't resonate and influence each other in room? Critically speaking, each grand should be assessed in the same position, surely ... or they should each be tune-dem'd into their individual optimum position :D

What would we say of .. Evelyn Glennie? Where does their appreciation of music come from? Thanks for mentioning Evelyn... I have to admit I wasn't familiar, but did a little Googling, which led to this: https://www.ted.com/talks/evelyn_glennie_shows_how_to_listen - I found her talk, musicianship, i...

1 step forwarDS; 2 steps Akubarik... :/ It's good that Linn reintroduced the DSs, especially if that leads to new Renews... I really hope they don't even think about considering limiting new LP12s to those with Urika 2, but I am surprised by the decision to drop their passive speakers. It seems like...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

New clips! This time “Hakai” and Tidal as source. Two different speaker positions. 29cm from wall (previous best position) ... 29,5 cm ... Amazing what 5mm will do. Agree with beck that 29cm is the better of these two... Did you try any further out than 29,5 or was that limited to the '2 cm change ...

Glad you've reached a happy Kanclusion... hope they let you hug (& smell) Kate Bush whenever you (& she) are in the mood... and if they're not kandusive, then maybe inviting her into your office would do the trick :D

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Supposedly the Kan is an LS3/5A clone .. or is that a klone? Have you heard any of the other later if not latest LS3/5(A) derivatives such as those from Harbeth, Spendor, or Graham - Harbeth P3; Spendor A1; Graham Chartwell LS3/5 - if not those from Falcon Acoustics or Stirling Broadcast? When revie...

Russell K Red 50s vs Linn...
I'm not the biggest fan of Linn speakers, generally, but I preferred them here... The RKs, as they been abbreviated above, sound a little too RauKous for my ears.

Kaos theory - 2nd set; "2 cm change in position" for me, thanks :)
Less convinced after listening on my phone, rather than my laptop, but not enough to change my vote... Maybe another, better, speaker position lurking somewhere?

I can hear why 2 might be preferred but it also loses something from 1... Hopefully Kaos can help you find the sweet spot somewhere in between - cats are good at that :)

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

(along with an upgrade to Buster, apparently) Don't forget that I had Stretch on a 40GB SSD, and Buster on a 300GB. Back in the LSNAS days, it was said that bigger is better for Intel 320s. That said, I kept back the bigger disks for the NAS and used the 40GB for Hakai, but this 300GB was free at t...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Couldn't hear much difference, if any. Maybe a little sound difference in favour(?) of Qobuz... Any meaningful musical difference in room? Since it's for streaming rather than critical listening, if there's little to nothing in it musically, then other factors likely weigh higher, inc content, cost,...

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

Got that the load/heat in streaming are low; was curious for more description on musical comparison, esp since ThomasOK's experiences with LSNAS & Radikal indicate that mobo orientation can make a surprising difference, hence wondering whether same is true just of SSD in Hakai. Have you compared & d...

Re: Debian/MPD: Recent/Latest Versions?

.. I now think Buster IS an improvement on Stretch... the Buster SSD is now firmly bolted in place and .. case closed. Maybe not "case closed" if you're going to investigate ideal torque settings... :) Do I understand correctly that you installed your SSD horizontally, above the CPU? I don't suppos...

Very hard. I found #2 somewhat more engaging, but that's probably because it's louder. (It is, I pulled it into Audacity to verify.) Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Gratifying to know since it was between 1 & 3 for me, with 3 sounding a bit more relaxed, in a good way, compared to 1. 2 just sounded wrong - I haven't liked the Cinnamon in either clip... Guess I should place an order for some Blue Jeans Cables then :)
