Re: More on source first and other priorities
Yeah, source first was best. Here's a hypothetical system for you since I haven't done a real world comparison. 1. Klimax LP12 > Sagatun Monos > Tundra Monos > Inexpressive speakers that don't let the music through very well 2. Selekt LP12 > Boazu > Majik 109s I think I'd pick system 2. So, the sam...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
So you compared a vinyl system against a CD / DVD system? That's more extreme or differently extreme to what I had in mind. I was thinking of comparing 2 vinyl, or 2 CD or 2 streaming systems. And of having 2 good but not quite equal sources. And 2 very different pairs of speakers, with one pair as ...

Re: More on source first and other priorities
How extreme a practical demonstration does anyone want to put on? For example System A The most tuneful sounding source available for a given recording format, a decent sounding amplifier, 2014 B&W CM1 speakers (untuneful budget speakers) The second most tuneful sounding source available for that fo...

Re: Is there a “best” test track?
If I used Steely Dan as a test track, I'd be too distracted by how grated I was by Fagen's vocals to be of any use when it came to evaluating the equipment. Too bad they didn't have Freddie Mercury as their lead singer. Have you got any recommendations? What do you usually use to evaluate a new com...

Re: Is there a “best” test track?
The Roches The Troubles is the sort of track that a good hi-fi system can get very close to making it sound like it's being performed live in your listening room.
Especially if you could get a hold of the master tape or a master tape copy.

Harman International. The fount of all knowledge on hi-fi :)
Although I suppose, given the aquisitive nature of their business, in a few years time they might be the fount of all hi-fi products.

Thanks Rutger. That makes your findings doubly interesting! Internal damping is something I’ve really struggled to get to work well. However, I think my methodology may not be very good so it’s not been possible to come to any definitive conclusions. Tuning the enclosure volume without filling is r...

If only 18mm void-free birch plywood was cheap! Or even available (in the UK)! One advantage of birch plywood for DIY projects is that, in my opinion you don't need to veneer it to look acceptable. I think that birch plywood has a natural beauty to it. The joint most musical sounding speakers I've h...

The one without compression would always sound better. I don’t agree. I have a very high respect for the producers of an album. I also consider the final version of an album to be THE work of art for the audience to enjoy, applaud or criticise. Therefore I also consider the practice of making diffe...

Re: LP12 50: If Jony Ive made record players...
There are those in mixing and production who know what they’re doing and those that do not. The only way I have been able to tell them apart is by listening. I haven’t found any numbers or specific techniques to be a short cut to the answer. I fully agree. I am just curious how the musical result w...

Re: LP12 50: If Jony Ive made record players...
I would enjoy listening to the 9.7 more than the 3.4. Both versions have ridiculous amounts of clipping. The contrast between the quieter bits and the louder bits on the 9.7 is significantly greater on the 9.7. Resulting in that sounding less bad. A better sounding version would have no clipping and...

Personally, I’ve never been able to correlate musical enjoyment with DR rating. Some high DR recordings are enjoyable and some less so. Here’s a low DR album I quite enjoy https://open.spotify.com/album/16J9NCaxxRc2QW999f5V9H?si=gNqpWq70TROeEGbeCke_Kw Here’s an album not listed in the DR database, ...

Re: LP12 50: If Jony Ive made record players...
There are loads of examples of albums that have been remastered with more compression being used than earlier versions. The more compressed versions have always sounded worse (with appropriate adjustment to the volume knob when comparing each version). It's impossible for me to say if any of my albu...

Here’s 360’s set up by Linn. https://youtu.be/EgvVhwQI0gc I was there in room, I found it inferior to a good set-up with 3677s at a fraction of that price. It's the high efficiency large woofered thing vs the low efficiency medium-sized woofered thing. Just goes to show, an extremely high retail pr...

Re: What Makes a Loudspeaker Musical?
If a source and amplifier sound bad with one pair of speakers whilst sounding good with another, is that the fault of the source and amplification, or a fault with the speakers? I’m not sure tbh. Personally, I’d like to think that a genuinely good loudspeaker should sound good with all sources, but...

I love Kans which have tiny drive units. I've thoroughly enjoyed 242s many times as well and they are the sort of speaker you dislike. I've yet to hear any make of speaker I prefer to Linn but I'm open to that, with or without 18" woofers. I hate Kans! They are too transistor radioey for me. I can ...

I think this became a more theoretical discussion which is good for sharing some experiences but is maybe the not so perfect approach in a forum where we speak about musicality … especially when non of us has heard the 360‘s live. So you've heard high efficiency speakers with 18" or larger woofers on which you would base an assessment as to whether Linn's choice of drivers is likely to compromise the sound?Tendaberry wrote: ↑2023-04-25 11:50 So, you've heard the 360's then, since you are implying that Linn's choice of drivers compromise the sound?
