Re: The Skeptical Audiophile - In Search of Better Records

Despite their cool name I'd be a little wary of the Skeptikal Audiophile. I would agree that pressings do certainly vary in musical quality and that many, if not most, rereleases are substandard - even the expensive ones. However, this seems to now be the home page for Better Records, a site that I ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

Hmm, this is interesting. It looks like we’ve got a semi-mullet combination (track 1) being generally preferred to a source first combination (track 3). Is this an example of “source first” theory being falsified? I think that is stretching it a bit. As the turntable/PS/arm/cartridge and the electr...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercises

This is really an LP12 comparison that was requested so it's '89-spec (with VM95ML stylus) versus '02-spec but I've added in K20/K400 and early/late Kan 1s into the mix cos I was comparing them myself anyway. Only K20 can be connected to the older Kans at the moment. Fill ya boots if it's of any in...

Re: Spotify settings for best musical performance

A further, and positive, update on the Spotify versions. For starters I am aware that you can't just necessarily stay with a specific firmware version forever (I spent 14 years in the Mac world and am an Apple certified computer technician). After all, some updates are bug fixes so sticking with an ...

Although we have gotten a little off topic here, there is a video file posted above I wanted to address so I'll carry us a little further off... I find it the video posted by Spannko very interesting for a couple of reasons. One is that the second track, a streamed one is a pretty "audiophile" type ...

Re: 50th Anniversary LP12

First off I am surprised by the $60,000 price as I was told it was going to be $50,000. That's double the current price for an interesting new plinth, power switch, hinges and a handful of cosmetic touches. I was informed that the Keel is only different cosmetically, not musically, and that from the...

Absolutely! My favourite (from an aesthetic perspective) is the original Rega RB??? with the detachable headshell on a wooden framed plinth. 571DD5EB-753B-45A2-BBC8-DF91BD228E01.png I have one sitting in my basement that I recently repaired. Re: Tundra Mono 3

I'm afraid I don't keep up with the used market that much. I would say that the best bets are usually Audiogon and eBay although you can also put items for sale here and on the WAM forum, which has a Linn section. As to what they are worth I would look them up on Hi-Fi Shark as they aggregate used l...

That's very interesting! I also certainly didn't think it was a speaker comparison as they sounded more similar than I would expect. I prefer 1 on all three tracks. I don't hear it so much as rushed but there does seem to be something not right with the timing on the 2 tracks. I just found the 2s gave me a sense of unease with the music whereas the 1 tracks were all quite enjoyable. Also on the F and G pieces the music sounded so...

The sticker companies would have made a lot of money if those had been put on all the appropriate albums!

I did not get inside the units and I don't recall doing the back plate. I recommend being careful and not going too high as the screws go directly into particle board.

Did someone brave compare .44 to .43? BTW, I have the impression that on macOS the version 1.2.13 is better as well. I had not intended to. But my iPad, which as noted above hadn't been doing a very good job of automatically updating, just chose to do so last night. So it is now at 8.8.44.458. My f...

Just a word of warning to check your settings after you do an upgrade. While the settings all stayed the same on my iPad, the upgrade to 8.8.43 on my iPhone changed a number of settings back to the less musical defaults. In my case a number of settings were changed. Under Settings, within Playback t...

Wow, indeed! In several ways. I hadn't noticed any musical change in the system recently so I went and checked the software on my iPad (which I thought had automatic updates as it has updated Spotify in the past and when it does the music always stops). As a little preamble I should mention that I h...
