Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E

I’d put my money on a nude elliptical too, but I’d also put a two way on us both being wrong! Experience has thought me that reliance on “knowledge” can lead us down the garden path! Hm. So you put all your money on the nude elliptical and the same amount on it being the wrong choice? That means yo...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

So, it seems that to get the most music out of the groove one should choose a cart with an elliptical tip and in the more expensive end a cart with contact line. I'm not entirely sure that's the case. It seems to me that the various tip shapes "tip" the sound in one way or another. But so does the ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

E rules! Regarding the distortion, it sounds like a really worn record to me. Does it break up only on the last track? It's interesting how some tip shapes seem to cope much better with records that break up like this. I wish that ability would be strongly correlated with how musical the overall rep...

Re: Market Rules

I have amended my adverts for speaker cable and interconnects. Normally that would bring them to the top of the list of For Sale items. For some reason that is not happening. Am I doing something wrong ? Hi Flatcoat! By 'amend', do you mean you edited it? If so, that doesn't bring it to the top. Po...

Re: Tundra Stereo idea

You asked for stupid ideas... Try a tundra in bridged configuration but as a stereo amp One channel non inverting One channel inverting Connect two speakers but reverse plus and minus on the speaker connected to the inverting channel. The speakers will be in phase. Now - since the most power (curre...

Re: Tundra Stereo idea

How could I think you didn’t tried out that already - so my next questions might be stupid ;( is there a way these errors would cancel out? like providing the loudspeaker output as balanced output ... minus and plus as live outputs? Well I have tried bridging, but there are countless other things I...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Thanks for an excellent post Ron! Your findings regarding the choice of tip matches my experiences with the old AT-95's. E always seemed the most musical and I have also never really experienced the dreaded end-of-side distortion. Sometimes MM carts can give a nasty sound, but it hasn't necessarily ...

I had an E before the K9 but found the inner groove distortion too much.
I see. So the ML is better in that department, then.

Do you feel that the new VMN95ML is more musical than an old AT95E? What about the naked E in the new VMN line?

Re: Tundra Stereo idea

Hi Defender! Thank you! I love suggestions like this, they always make me think along a different path than the ones I am currently occupied with. Tundra is bridgeable and I have used that on a few occasions to get a lot of power. The drawback is that it doesn't sound as good, which is the case with...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Why did you pick the ML instead of the E?

Do you know whether the new models are in fact more musical than the old ones?

If you can find an old 95E stylus, it fits on the K9 body and might sound better than the VMN-95ML.

Re: Testing MC step up transformers

The line level transformers and the SUTs are two separate ranges from Lundahl, as the required levels and ratios are different. But they're both analogue signal transformers and therefore similar, while the switch mode power supplies in Boazu, Sagatun /Mono and Tundra /Mono use a completely differen...

Re: Lingo 1 recap result

Those little Peak Atlases can be useful instruments! Cheap and effective. But please note that the LCR40 doesn't say all that much. Neither about the ESR nor the leakage current. Those caps can be in quite bad shape even if they seem to measure OK with the LCR40. Recapping a Lingo is really tricky i...

Re: Testing MC step up transformers

OK! True, both use transformers. But very different in design, materials and practical use.

I doubt there's any cross pollination possible here, but as I said, it's fun and perhaps, at least maybe somewhere far down the line, worthwhile thinking of what they have in common.

Re: How to repair failing Dynamiks

Wonderfully helpful, Linntek! Thanks for posting.

I think it's more likely leakage current related than ESR.

Defender: I'd go a bit further than 'misleading' and say that it's pointless to try measuring a cap in circuit.

Re: Testing MC step up transformers

Any potential to transform the power supplies in Sagatun or Tundra arising from your MC SUT tests? I'm not sure what you mean by this. The SUTs have nothing to do with power supplies. The principles and technologies involved are so vastly different that it's a fun exercise to try to find what they ...

Re: Testing MC step up transformers

SUT offers a nice upgrade path for Slipsik owners moving to MC but it also makes sense that you don't want too many products. I guess the SUT market is also much smaller than traditional MC phono. Thank you for your comments! I don't mind having many products, but each one needs to make sense. The ...

The suggested Sturtevant Richmont CAL 36/4 seems to be unattainable in Italy.

Can someone suggests a similar alternative, including the kit?
There are no good alternatives.

You can find them on eBay, beware that old used ones can sometimes go bad, but in bulk they're occasionally dirt cheap.

OK, so you noe have two Masterplug strips. Which direction is the cord on these two? Is the text on the two cords identical (which often indicates that it's the same model)? Are the two cords equally long? If you have one cord in each direction and the text on the two cords is identical and they are...

I have gone back to using the Masterplug power strip, and I agree the music flows better. Interesting that you reached that conclusion. Then it seems everyone thinks the same, both about the clips and in real life? With the added bonus the print on the mains cable travels from the plug to the power...

I did just that at the start of the summer. I fell for a pristine pair of s/h Proac Response D38’s. They are passively biamped by my A4200 and I am extremely happy. New Linn speakers are too expensive and require too many channels of amplification for my modest finances. Have you tested using only ...

Re: Is aktiv operation best in all respects (same quality amp)?

Some tweeters can sound more musical when they are driven from a high impedance amplifier in active mode. That means, putting a resistor about 3,3 ohms in series with the + connection of the tweeter can bring musical benefits. The proof is in the listening. Ofcourse you have to compensate the gain ...
