Re: Help with summer house system

Gigaport directly to Tundra sounds fine! I have not tested it on very low levels, which could potentially suffer.

Re: Cables

This can't be related to the power supply. The only sensible explanation is that both cables are faulty.

Re: Cables

Looks like the right one. Very strange that it doesn't work, I don't understand why.

I can test them for you on one of my streamers, if you want. But as you've already tested them between several products, perhaps there's no point?

It's a much better sounding piece of software with more options and the ability to support an audio server as well as a dedicated player.
Could you elaborate a bit on "Much better sounding"? Clips would of course be ideal to support the claim. :)

Re: Best / worst vinyl pressings

I am tempted by Mobile Fidelity’s reissue of Supertramps “Breakfast in America” (new record) in the “Original Master recording” series but it is not cheap. Is it any good? I have never heard a Mobile Fidelity Original Master Recording that impressed me. They have always sounded weird. Usually any r...

Re: Latest records to enter your collection

My sister gave me her old vinyl collection this weekend.. I haven't brought them all home yet, but I did bring David Bowie's Pinups, Ozzy Ozbourne's Diary of a Madman + Speak of the Devil, Peter Gabriel's first and some others. None of which I owned before.

Thank you Sister!

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I feel that the song as a whole is better with the damping pad. But it also seems to loose a bit of the dynamics that are present without the pad. As I've done this comparison live many times, I feel the clips don't quite do it justice. Because in the room, the presentation is a lot more dynamic and...

Hi Charlie! Apologies for the late response - took care of 30 loose ends and closed the lab for vacation TODAY! Yesss - four weeks from today when I'll do my best not to think of the projects (although I really want to, experience has taught me that unexpected benefits can arise from completely igno...

Re: MC preamp straight into power amp?

Hi, I think Thomas has answered a question I have had about my kikkin now that my slipsik7 is a full 4 months burned in and sounding rather excellent. I use some so called inefficient Linn speakers in my system which can cause clipping pretty easily in the upper ranges of the kikkin pre-amplifier c...

Re: Symptom of lp12 out of level

A little worse.

Actually it was a good while since I made a proper comparison. But I have many times screwed in the feet of Trampolin and adjusted the shelf until the LP12 has been level and it's always sounded a bit more stable and "right" afterwards.

Re: Symptom of lp12 out of level

Hi bonzo! Always keep your Trampolin feet screwed all the way in. Don't overtighten, as they can break. Adjust the wall shelf until the plinth (or top plate, as sometimes the plinth is a little warped) is level. The platter should be level with the top plate when the suspension of the LP12 is proper...

Re: GIGAPORT HD/HD+

I do agree with Ron the Mon on the low business interest of ESI-Audio to shell money on this but, given that some enhusiasts at ALSA-Project would do it free, I don't see why I should "curb my enthusiasm" and not even try to have something put in motion ??? You're right to have enthusiasm and posit...

Re: Thoughts around a Lejonklou Streamer

Ah, interesting! I have the AK4497 but haven't heard the 4499. Even better sounds promising. There are also some other new chips around and then there's R2R DACs, which require an extreme amount of precision in the resistors, but this is already something I'm into, so not really a problem. The issue...

Re: MC preamp straight into power amp?

There's always new angles to explore! Even the basic premises need be discussed and constantly reevaluated for things to move forward.

That's part of what's so fascinating with this field where art meets science.

Re: MC preamp straight into power amp?

What is also worth questioning - and this is something I remember discussing with Matthias long ago - is why the power amp should add gain when the preamp usually just attenuates signal. It must be bad for quality to attenuate and then amplify, in summary doing manipulations adding up to nothing. Ri...

Re: Entry Level Lejonklou MC

BTW, I asked some time ago for variable gain to fit EMT cartridges. I suppose this is not possible with #3 as well? Sorry Matthias, I forgot your question. The EMT's have 1 mV of output, right? I'm afraid none of my MC phono stages will be able to handle that. They are all built around a very high ...

Re: Entry Level Lejonklou MC

Oh yes, it's very worthwhile! In fact, I'd say it's essential. I think it's impossible to make a great sounding amplifier without having tried many, many variations of "how much amplification and where". The pre-amp doesn't perform any amplification unless you play very loud. That's where the volume...

Re: Entry Level Lejonklou MC

This might be a daft question (since I don't understand the science very well) but is it technically possible to remove part of the amplification process by building a single source phono/power amplifier? - i.e. go from RIAA equalisation straight to the power amp stage. I guess you'd have to skip a...

A couple of guys on the Naim forum tried two Radikals about 10 years ago. Both of them preferred a single Radikal much to their surprise.
