Re: HAKAI Build Help?

Thanks for that Pete, great sound in both cases ..second track in both cases sounded better to me. I've got different rips from same Album but different mastering and the differences can be night and day sometimes. Check out Nick Drake on Tidal for me .You don't need to compare ,you'll just think Ni...

Re: HAKAI Build Help?

Very good recordings, sounds almost like a direct line! I tend to get a lot of room effects in my clips. What did you use? I used my mobile phone, propped up on a bamboo stand. However, playing back on the phone over via Google Photos, I don't hear the sort of differences that I hear in the room. I...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Thanks Ron for taking the time to share your expertise with such a detailed informative and interesting post. I discovered a few weeks ago that I preferred a pair of blacks over the pair of silvers I was using. Having inspected them I think the silvers are custom made. They are shorter and appear ha...

I noticed six discrepancies immediately (a few others came clear upon further inspection). I can share those details if anyone is interested. It will help those buying or building their own.
I'm interested, Ron

Re: HAKAI Build Help?

That's interesting, that would be great ,when you have the time thanks. But what was the difference? Here's a couple of examples: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Qteh92G4sYAtH3bQ8 The differences vary considerably, as these illustrate. 1A and 1B I picked out because they really stand out. 2A and 2B I picke...

Quadraspire Q4 shelf maple

Would also consider oak or cherry

Could exchange for a glass shelf (which is what I want to replace).

No need for legs - I just need the shelf

Re: HAKAI Build Help?

When you say you prefer Peter ,do you mean sound quality is better and if so what's the difference? Yes the sound quality of many of my ripped CDs is poorer than Qobuz. Not all of the them - but it's sufficiently hit and miss that I prefer to go straight to Qobuz. I have a few CDs that aren't avail...

Re: HAKAI Build Help?

Case, motherboard, RAM, DAC and SSDs on order. Select cables later. HW dealt with, SW to follow. Happy with the advice I've read and heard. New motherboard was a steal (and off my radar - thanks FPM). Distillation of sound advice is easy compared to finding out on my lonesome. The Auralic is on the...

Re: Pete's System

For digital music I was using Sonos and my amp was an Arcam AVR300. The Sonos was only good enough for background music, so the Axis was the main source. Having introduced the Hakai, now I'm listening via Qobuz and Radio Paradise and digital is the main source, although I still play vinyl regularly.

Yes. The hakai has brought fab new music and the Boazu has brought it all to life, improving vinyl as well

Re: Pete's System

Thanks for the nice comments. When we designed the house, the alcove for the hifii rack was put on its own fused spur with separate earth, and K400 run under the floor to the speakers, which face the other direction (towards and parallel to the rack but firing about 2m to the side). The idea was to ...

Pete's System

Since the pandemic my system has undergone a radical transformation. That's what happens when we're made to spend more time at home :). During lockdown I ticked quite a few longstanding jobs that had been left over from the house build when we moved in 9 years ago, and sorting out my digital source ...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

Musical timing seem to vary when the hunt for sound sets in. So gaining a “better” sound often mean a change of the musical timing. To which degree this affects us when listening we have to decide for ourselves. All we can do is listen, compare and decide what works best for our own ears. I've foun...

Re: Speaker Placement Tuning

If I'm using familiar music to judge changes, am I really able to use tune method? Will my familiarisation with the music compromise my ability to detect differences in timing? I suspect that I should use a different unfamiliar tune for each change, but I'm not sure how practical this would be. How ...
