Re: Kazoo Kraziness. Alas, no ALAC?

Did you solve this? I have a similar problem.
  • Upmpdcli on snakeoil
  • Bubbleupnp and twonky with open home on a separate music server.
  • Linn kazoo
I can play the alac files if I use hifi cast rendered to upmpdcli, but kazoo rendering to the openhome renderer for the same upmpdcli does not work.

I'm trialling Qobuz now. I've imported playlists from Deezer (ie recreated them from scratch: what a faff).

Interesting how much more popular renting via streaming is over buying downloads.

Oz streamer (not HAKAI)

I've assembled Pete Oz Hakai (POH) v0.2 v0.1 sounded like it was playing underwater in a tin can through a sock, which was rather disappointing initially. However I switched the USB cable for the DAC to the front panel and suddenly music emerged, at about twice the volume. My benchmark is the Sonos ...

Buy - free?
For the rest of time - means?
Tense: Past, present, future
Yes - it was rather badly worded. I upped my game and re-worded it

Quality digital music: Do You Buy or Rent?

I'm wondering which approach to take: buy lossless downloads and store them locally, pay once and then forever free, or pay for the rest of my life for streaming.

What choice have you made?

Re: Deezer or TuneIn on Hakai

I can confirm that the combination of Bubble UpnP with MinimServer/MinimStream allows streaming of internet radio. I have it working with BBC stations and my local radio station. It's a pretty geeky set up and will break as soon as any stream provider changes the URLs of their content. Tunein is not...

Re: Deezer or TuneIn on Hakai

I suspect that Deezer is not worth pursing at this point. They have very narrow explicit support playing over streaming solutions and have told their forum that they are not going to support UPNP. Good news though: Both BBC and Tunein support the HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol. Minim Radio (http...

Re: Deezer or TuneIn on Hakai

If you use HiFi Cast as a control point you get Internet Radio built-in. I've just started using HiFi Cast, having added Twonky to my existing media PC (it's a little Atom box I've had for about 10 years, on which I store all my media backed up via Livedrive). I've been using the Sonos control poin...

I'm having trouble sourcing the recommended Deltaco SATA 1000/600 cables in the UK. Does anyone have any suggestions where I can find them? The Nordic sites do not seem to be set up to send to the UK

Re: Deezer or TuneIn on Hakai

Is there a good sounding music station on TuneIn you can recommend? I'm using the free service too, mostly to listen to BBC R4 or my local independent radio. It's very much background audio so I can't recommend it for musicality. I'm intrigued by the Oz Hakai, as it is a low cost route in and can b...

Deezer or TuneIn on Hakai

I am considering building a Hakai. I currently listen to my Linn Axis or Sonos roughly 50/50. On the Sonos I listen to Deezer, my music library and TuneIn. I've been researching Volumio and SnakeOil OS but can't find confirmation that Deezer is supported. Is anyone successfully using Deezer or TuneI...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I'm pleased you like it - I'm really enjoying playing records again, and I'm pleasantly surprised that this rather ad hoc system can sound so enjoyable. My final choices were: 4mm VTA 2.3g Tracking (although I found 2.3g and 2.25g pretty close) 2.4g Anti-skate (2.4g and 2.25g were close, better to m...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

Thanks everyone for taking the time. It's interesting that you're struggling to hear differences - I found it OK when listening at the time, but difficult with the recordings. Sorry for the delay in responding - I've been on Lundy Island for the last week (no interweb, in fact barely any comms). I'm...

Here are the recordings for VTA: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/g78xzwq7jrh0 ... tA-Da?dl=0

Hopefully you can access them.

I had set the VTA on a previous session, and for me this session has confirmed my original setting. I'll be very interested to see if you agree :)

Quick question regarding setting arm height: is it worth tuning to sub millimetre resolution? If so I'll need to buy some feeler guages as I've only got plastic shims to 1mm

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

What a great thread. I did not expect to hear differences recorded and played back using phones. It's interesting that my 'instinctive' preferences on the recordings seem very consistent (close my eyes: which one do I want to keep playing?). However if I try to analyse the difference I'm hearing, or...

Speaker supports: Gliders vs spikes?

I subscribe to an email newsletter from Jim Smith (author of "Get Better Sound"), and the most recent issue promotes using "gliders" under speaker spikes: Quite simply, using spikes as the interface between the floor and the speaker consistently produces what I call Audiophile Bass. There is no ques...

Re: Lejonklou Tundra

Final price is not set, but a rough estimate is around 30.000 SEK (=3300€=£2900=$4700). Wow. If it can compete with Linn Solos and appeal to those who appreciate what Linn do, that's the sort of price that will have an impact. Very interesting. Even I could afford it, although the s/h market might ...
