Re: Playground for practical listening exercises
Okay, I'll put my head above the parapet! I was a late convert to iTunes ripping to ALAC, and I found the "no correction" setting to be usefully more musical. My ripping drive is a Samsung SH-224. For the first song, I initially felt it easy to pick B on drive 1. The difference seemed smaller with D...

Re: A provocation
Famous last words! That would work, when the digital is you're only source of music ,you'll be more appreciative of what it can do and less willing to possibly make things worse ,if it ain't broke .... So comparing to an LP12 isn't in frame then; it's just that your LP12 shows up digital in a genera...

Re: A provocation
It feels like there are many elements to streaming - to focus on a song or album streamed from a NAS compared with the same(?) recording played on an LP12 could be argued to be ignoring the wider benefits of streaming. If the inadequacy of streaming is in comparison to a 5 figure turntable, then ma...

Re: A provocation
maybe you're chopping and changing because you can. Were you happy with your DS3 before the Hakai came along...or your Lp12 for that matter ? Yes, it's because I can. Even with the DS I got obsessive about which version of Davaar was best! You could always put on some Ornette Coleman ,that would cer...

Re: A provocation
I am waiting for the upcoming Schiit Audio cd transport named "Urd". It is not expensive (USD 1300)and supposed to be very good. I have no clue if it will outperform Hakai, maybe it will do the trick. Matt Thank you. Good to know. But I have spent countless hours trying to get the system right, rat...

A provocation
Is streaming all it's cracked up to be? I get that we can now stream any music we like from several services. For a number of reasons that doesn't appeal to me. What I want from streaming is simple: the best reproduction possible of music, not available on vinyl, which is owned by me on CD. Years ag...

Re: Troika and Naim Stageline K/S
Do you already own the Troika? It was a great cartridge, but the youngest examples are now 27 years old, and re-tipping or re-building Linn MC cartridges often destroys their musicality. I've had a factory rebuilt Klyde, which was nowhere near as good as a new one. That's why Linn stopped rebuilding...

Re: Troika and Naim Stageline K/S
Hi Allan3630, Please tell us the complete system that you are currently using. You have several threads where you ask in isolation about different parts of the system. It would be a lot easier to help you if we knew the full story. In particular, you mention your Troika. What specification of LP12 i...
Re: Sweetspot
Yes, and no. Some years ago when my system was all Linn, and in a different flat, a visiting friend tuned it so that it sounded really fantastic, especially from the sweetspot. But it was no more musical, and listening for the "headphone effect" got in the way of enjoyment.

Hmm... tokenbrit's description seems spot on! I think A is better, but there's a lot of fun happening with B.
Re: Boazu pre
You should listen for yourself before deciding. And, when I listened to Boazu, it was not the latest version... Also, don't always be thinking of the future - what you buy now may be so good that you decide to get off the upgrade train :)
Re: Boazu pre
Just that. If you do a quick comparison, you may be seduced by the clarity and detail which will come from using the DVC (pre-amp) section of the ADS. But you won't (or rather, I wouldn't) want to live with that for very long. The Boazu will not sound as "impressive", but you will get a more enjoyab...
Re: Boazu pre
Boazu. It probably won't sound as immediately impressive, but It'll be a lot, a lot, more musical.
I used to have ADS/3, and 109s. The Boazu pre will wipe the floor with the DVC in the ADS, and it will make the 109s sing. Yes, I've heard that.

Re: HAKAI playground
Thank you all for your comments! They have helped me make (or remake) a more musical digital system. It all started last year when I decided that the LSNAS sounded better with Win10 than Debian, and then that Volumio sounded better than Debian for the Hakai hardware. Both these decisions were made a...

Re: LP12 Radikal problem
Thank you! You've obviously experimented more than me... I wasn't clear about my question at all! What I was thinking was whether you had tried the original feet in the place of your spikes, and whether that was even possible. I understand about your shelf being tuned to Trampolin. I've tried severa...

Re: HAKAI playground
Curious that the changes changed the result(s) - one might expect that hardware changes would improve both; not reverse previous preferences. Results for my clips, above, echoed your latest results... One thing I have found is that the Linux kernel image changes the sound, which is why I stayed wit...

Re: LP12 Radikal problem
I was thinking about using the baseboard instead of the trampolin to get around this problem but was advised that with the trampolin it sounds better There are different generations of baseboard, with varying rigidity, and I think that a primary function is/was to ensure electrical safety. Back in ...

Re: LP12 Radikal problem
If I've seen that correctly, you have put the spikes into the plinth holes, where normally the original, non-Trampolin, feet would go? Does it make any difference whether the Trampolin is fitted, or not, with this arrangement? I'm using the original small feet, and no baseboard, since replacing my U...

Re: HAKAI playground
The differences were that A and C had the Hakai running a 300GB Intel 320 with Debian Stretch, controlled from Kazoo via AssetUPnP on the LSNAS. B and D were from a 160GB Intel 320 with Volumio 2.411 running MPD 21.16, with Volumio accessing the files directly. Although I had done this comparison a...
