Re: Random thoughts on hifi

CWC was one of my favourite albums of the 70’s. I’m going to go and have a listen now! The live album “Paris” is a great album too.

I suppose the bottom line is that without a frame of reference, all we end up with is random noise.

Not that one. It’s been a while, but it was related to inter listener consistency.

Statistically, where's the proof? It sounds suspect mathematically.

Good watch. Thanks Spankko, do you think slide 64 is your "proof"?

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

I absolutely agree. I’d rather have a tuneful supermarket HiFi for €100 than anything else, at any price, that can’t bang out a tune.

As I’ve described previously, an uncontrolled test of this kind is likely to produce a split decision.

Re: Hakai Vs £55 PC SB RESULTS RECOUNT !!! (UPDATE)

These results are seriously disconcerting. Not even a consensus in the individual comparisons. Not necessarily. As I’ve described previously, an uncontrolled test of this kind is likely to produce a split decision. Floyd Toole has done a lot of research on this. His recommendation for overcoming th...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

Sorry beck, I’m still struggling to understand your Danglish blanding 😉 What I think you’re saying is that flow and the feeling of musical timing is most important, then you’d prefer a fist on the nose to one at a distance. However, if you can’t have it on your nose, any distance will do so long as ...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

I think I’m with you here beck, although I do feel that some digital systems can replace the flesh on the bones! ☠️☠️☠️ Forgive me if I’m wrong, but you seem to be describing the “sound” and “impact” of a system, and that although the presentation may change, what’s presented can still be called “mu...

Re: Hakai Vs £55 PC

My point is that without a frame of reference, your decision that they sound as good as one another only applies to you. It’s possible that someone will “agree” with you, but for totally different reasons. In that case, the “agreement” is merely a coincidence. With a frame of reference, any agreemen...

Re: Hakai Vs £55 PC

The downside of closed voting is that the results will tend to aggregate around the mean From a statistical or musical point of view I don't understand how that would work. In this example I believe the results were close because all of the clips were close in audio quality. I agree it's desirable ...

I think you’re right beck. Through communicating we create a common understanding, which we can individually filter to arrive at something we find useful.

Re: Hakai Vs £55 PC

To be fair I only asked what do you prefer, maybe 'and why' should be added .To go from 95% in favour of one clip to very close to 50/50 in a secret ballot says a lot for me. The clips here have come a long way from this product A and this is product B which one do you prefer, which was happening a l...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

This is one of those times I wonder if the first playing of clips doesn't have a problem. When I first listened to Clip 1 I thought something was wrong. Then I listened to Clip 2 and thought it was better. Then I listened to Clip 2 and Clip 1 a second time, in that reverse order, and preferred Clip...

.If Linn has truely left the concept of tune dem and source first behind I fear they will sooner or later run out of rope (I do not believe they have). Whether Linn have abandoned Tune Dem, or not, isn’t an easy question to answer. Actually it’s easy to answer. They removed TD from their homepage. ...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices

I’ve just remembered that detecting inharmonicity “appears” to be an innate sense. It’s something nearly everyone can do from an early age, but it’s not yet known if we are born with the ability or we learn it very quickly. It may also be a consequence of the way our inner ear works. I think it’s p...

Well done, beck! Your CD player sounds really good. Re: “disharmonic vibration”. I agree, and would say that inharmonicity is at the root of ALL poorly performing systems. I’d even go further and say that harmonicity is essential for life! Without harmonicity, there is nothing (ie pre Big Bang), and...

Re: How to learn tunedem?

Well done LinnJim. TuneDem isn’t easy, and even after many years of practicing I’m no expert and still sometimes get it wrong. Fortunately, the error soon makes itself known, which is a reminder to do it again. Your technique of “focus without focusing” is a great one, and much more like how we list...

Since I’m the only person to prefer 1, I thought I’d have another listen.

I’m sticking with 1, cos while 2 does the HiFi stuff ok, it just sounds too musically incoherent to my ears.

Re: Quality digital music: Do You Buy or Rent?

I have recently gone from buying to renting with Quobuz. I used to use an off the shelf NAS drive / ripper and good ones cost around £1000 . I would guess at a shelf life of around 5 years and potential intermittent reliability /IT issues - my Rip Nas went to the dealer every 2 to three years and f...
