Re: upgrade path
Yes, the HAKAI might be the solution. Today I was a little in the HAKAI area. Just reading the technical terms made me dizzy. The thought of building one yourself seems like a bad joke to me. So the question is: Which amiable person would be willing to build one for me? However, I'm afraid I am not...

Here’s a comparison between a Rega P3 and a Technics SL1200 turntable. The reviewer is focused on the sound differences, but we can do our own tune based comparison. https://youtu.be/ogiWnw5X0ZI Replace the mediocre stock arm on the Technics with something better, eg OL modded rega arm or Alphason ...

Re: Assistance with Linn system hub choice
Hello Marco Polo, I’d also be interested in knowing what your musical expectation might be. What’s the most enjoyable system you’ve ever owned or heard? What have you heard that hasn’t been to your taste? Of the systems you’ve enjoyed, what was it about them that got you excited? Similarly, what was...

To get a “budget” amplifier into a list of the best amplifiers costing as much as a decent car is a fantastic achievement Fredrik. Well done!

I like what beck likes No. Seriously. I really do like what beck likes. 😂. The red led can’t play bass, which is strange, because in the Nait, the red led plays bass better than the green led.

BUT! I might be falling into my usual trap of thinking that the extra clarity, dynamics and purity of the Krystal allows the “spectral envelope” to be heard easier which gives the impression that it’s more musical. AND! One disagrees with beck at their peril. He’s rarely wrong! Sometimes I got a po...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
I think I prefer the oak deck slightly more. After the first 10 to 15 seconds it feels as though it starts to pull away from the black deck and settle down into a more harmonious presentation. The chords from about half way through seem more harmonically complete on the oak deck, with more dynamic r...

I agree. The SL1200 is easily bettered by the lowly P3, never mind an LP12!

Hello Charlie! Thank you for sharing the earlier clips of Naim vs Linn. Of these last clips i prefer the ones with the black LP12. Have you checked the rubber surrounds of the cones on your SBLs? Good point. Also, are the gaskets between the bass enclosure and its loading enclosure still airtight?

Re: Recommended tool for 242 3 k array torque settings
Just as a matter of interest, I tightened my 3K’s to ‘my preferred’ 0.9Nm tonight and really didn’t like the result. After dropping to 0.8Nm (Thomas’ favourite) I was happy again. In fact, very happy. Then I read the above posts only to discover I actually preferred 0.8Nm when we did the test 9 mont...

Re: Playground for practical listening exercices
This is a very different sound to your more recent offerings charlie1! I’ve got only a slight preference for the Lingo deck, which surprised me given your comments on what you’re hearing at home. I do wonder though, if the Geddon deck might become a bit of a musical bore after a while due to it not ...

Re: How we define "good sound"
For me, the relevance of pitch, harmonicity and tune is that when a musical note is reproduced through a HiFi system, the harmonics of the note will inevitably become subtly skewed (to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the system) which will ever so slightly alter the pitch as we hear (perce...

This is definitely the best vintage setup so far............ About 1min 18sec into this is the kinda tuneful and well timed groove that I love. It sounds better in the room - treble less intense. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ltrlkee9uotlpr8/IMG_0016.MOV?dl=0 I feel like I have not made it absolutely c...

Re: How we define "good sound"
Dasher, I think you are right, there’s no research which suggests listening to tunes in the way recommend on this forum will lead to a state of bliss. However, there are many papers looking at the various effects of inharmonicity and how it affects pitch perception. I read recently how harmonically ...

Re: How we define "good sound"
I guess "following the tune" is a bit like religion. I truly wish I could have faith in something greater than all of us, but coming from a strong science background, I'm more driven by evidence than faith. Same applies to the "tune-dem" (no offence intended). I've tried to "follow the tune" and id...
