Re: Recording Bass Guitar
I thought I'd leave you with another one before I head out on vacation. Yes again from my favorite band King Crimson and one of the nest pieces of music they, or any prog rock band for that matter, ever did. The track is "Starless" from the album "Red" and is 12 and a half minutes long. If you want...

Re: Dr Loudness War
Interesting clips mastering above. it seems as if vinyl by it self is adding or enhancing something in the recording that the CD do not have. Strange. Why, otherwise should the program detect relatively large differences when trying to measure compression. Compression and autotune makes a lot of co...

Re: Dr Loudness War
Colin, Radio was definitely a factor. On the attached link Katz describes the accelerants for loudness. Forecasting several years ahead was brave of him. https://youtu.be/u9Fb3rWNWDA Interesting video. Unfortunately, he wasn't right about the normalization killing of the loudness war by 2020. I do ...

Re: Dr Loudness War
The loudness war keeps on going. I found the recent album by Haim (2020) just terrible. When I tried to confirm my suspicions, I discovered this site (below) that measures the dynamic range in albums. My favorite albums are typically in the green and yellow. And, it appears that most vinyl versions...

Re: Recording Bass Guitar
I enjoy bass players who are more melodic in their playing rather than just anchoring the rhythm. Then again I suppose it comes in part from being into prog rock. I thought I'd link a couple examples of bass playing I like. So here is Easy Money and Easy Money: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0rol...

Re: Recording Bass Guitar
Thanks for the clips Math! The guy playing bass on here is supposed to be a legend amongst bass players: https://youtu.be/SbyAZQ45uww Hejira is my favourite Joni album and Jaco Pastorius is part of it but it's a stellar band. Who's your favourite bass player? I often listen to that record with Nanc...

Re: Recording Bass Guitar
In my humble opinion, you're not supposed to notice the bass until it stops playing. A wee side note, just before Chic's Bernard Edwards died he was playing live on stage and was intermittently having blackouts. Nile Rodgers was totally unaware as he said the gaps in the bass were always in time so...

Re: Quality digital music: Do You Buy or Rent?
I often buy downloads on Bandcamp from the smaller bands, the great thing about Bandcamp is that they only take 12 to 15% of the money, the rest goes directly to the artists or the small labels. Some music is even free or "pay what you want". I also use Tidal that has broadened my musical taste. It'...
Re: ATC SCM40
I used ATC SCM100ASL active speakers for a fair number of years. I felt they were quite musical at the end of an all Linn system and Linn/Lejonklou system. Out of curiosity I bought a pair of original factory passive crossovers for them and found they were easily more musical passive with Tundra Mo...
Re: ATC SCM40
lindsayt, If I lived in a more populated part of the world with a better selection of used hifi gear I would do the same as you, buying used and sell it on if I didn't like it, without any loss. No need for a listen. The problem for me, in a small town like mine, it's evident that hifi is something ...
Re: ATC SCM40
Hi Math, Have a look at Adams from Germany, they may well suit what you are looking for. This is a link to their web site and dealer lists https://www.adam-audio.com/en/find-a-dealer/ Hi Starman and thank you for the reply. I have heard good things about the Adam studio monitors and I had some thou...

Re: ATC SCM40
You asked a while ago about Graham LS5/9 floorstanders. I have a pair of the standmounts, which are light years ahead of M140s, and the M109s I used to have, for musicality and information. Do they have a neutral response curve? I don't know, but I do know I enjoy them a lot. Whatever you do, don't...
Re: ATC SCM40
I can't help you very much, as I've not heard those particular ATC speakers. After that disclaimer, let me try anyway. I've heard, several times, the more expensive SCM50s. To me, they vary significantly depending on amplification and source, which is another way of saying that source first is the ...
ATC SCM40
Hi everyone! Does anyone of you kind people have experience with the ATC speakers? I have had my eyes on these speakers for a while now and just by reading about them I think I will like them and maybe they can be an upgrade to the loudspeakers I got now, passive Majik 140 with upgrade stands. Unfor...

Re: Small top quality floorstanders
Hello Peter, now after some time with your new Graham speakers, maybe you can give us a longer review? I have the M140's myself and thinking about an upgrade and the Graham's looks interesting, so a more in-depth comparison to them would be great. :) Apologies for the delay, but I've (fortunately) ...

Re: Musical Streaming Services
I'm sure Qobuz and Tidal sound the same as long as they got the same masters from the record labels, that is if it's nothing strange is happening in the streaming part on their side? When I had Spotify years ago, my mind always drifted away and I lost interest in the music, and I know others that ha...

Re: Small top quality floorstanders
I had the test of the Graham's yesterday and was very impressed. Physically they are very similar in size to the M140s but with a larger base. As expected the Graham's produced more bass which was possibly the weakest link in the M140. I also noticed a much greater improvement of overall sound with...

Re: Recording Bass Guitar
dasher, I think the bass in Carla Bleys album "Life Goes On" is a good example of what Charlie1 don't like about the usual bass recordings in the modern world, the simplified way of D.I recording to get a bass recording that's easy to control in the mix over a natural-sounding reproduction of the re...
