Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E
I tried the 18gram and I do not recommend it. I had to solder direct to the VM95 to make it fit.

Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E
The leads on the 18gram headshell are not compatible, broke one. I have new connectors to make new ones so I can report back on headshell weight increase.

Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E
Many thanks for input JH and Tom. Just thinking as I have the Linto I am only set up for MC. Dont wish to make things overly complicated so perhaps downgrading the cartridge wont fly. Another thought, and although I'm not intending change anytime soon, would be by my reckoning a 2nd hand standard R...

Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E
Interesting discussion. I'm not a fan of expensive cartridges: 1) I cant afford them 2) They need replaced 3) Cartridges by their nature can be accidentally broken, snapped etc 4) Their position in tt hierarchy means money best spent elsewhere. Given this I have enjoyed the ATF7 on Basik Plus arm s...

Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E
And yes I mean the AT-VM95c specifically. The c version is conical. The tracking force for it is 1.5-2.2g, the K9 is I think 2-2.5g or 2-3g (I forgot already) for the conical tip. (people who disregard the conicals are trying to squeeze something unnatural out of the grove I think) 1. I have multipl...

Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E
The K9 has a higher tracking force. I'm actually curious how similar the AT95C is to the AT-VM95c. The E's might be the same but I don't know about the C's.

Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E
I use a shim to improve coupling between the lighter headshells and the AT (shim is from the sorta cardboard paper that is used in tapes of electronics, it's thinner than cereal box). That improved the sound with all my carts on the lighter headshells. However until I switched to a 13g I wasn't sold...

Re: The Mighty AT95E Becomes The AT-VM95E
The VM95C is stupid good. Like I've heard some of the more expensive carts and I'm not sure they offer more in a way that makes them worth it. However however however.... You need at least a 13gram headshell. I have an 18gram on the way to try. (if it's better but worse I'll try a 15gram before I de...
Re: JBL 3677
I ended up removing some lining behind my woofer. It seems like 100% isn't the right balance, makes instruments sound small.
It's kind of a vintage thing to have low amounts of internal lining/filling. I think there is a little something to it.

Re: JBL 3677
After more listening I can say I think the damping of the horn body is a very good thing. While I understand at budget and everything it's a great way to mount a horn, I can still say that it's better than a horn not be exposed to as much vibration from a woofer so this is a solution without totally...
Re: JBL 3677
I grabbed the 5 sheets of these to put on the horns, on the inside of cabin.
I'm not conclusive on sound yet. May be positive. I noticed the CD rings a little tapping on the front but it's hard to want to place anything on it that could thermally interfere.

Re: JBL 3677
I only made one change at time. You guys aren't getting that full benefit because I screwed up when recording the first time - and I'm not about to move backwards for myself. Well I think my thoughts that the videos aren't going to tell anything too well are correct. In person no one would ever choo...
Re: JBL 3677
Playing around. I untwisted tweeter leads. I prefer that. Makes sense to me.
Re: JBL 3677
Supposedly 3.5" (in) but I'm not sure it poofs up that much. I apologize but being in the US it's really hard to search the EU anywhere. BondedLogic makes it, the product is called Ultratouch denim insulation, R13. I don't know any building supply places in the EU. https://www.bondedlogic.com/ultrat...
Re: JBL 3677
Btw if anyone is wondering I choose denim insulation because it has the best coefficients across the board. R13 is right thickness, thicker can cause some reflection. A better way would be to glue on thick vinyl tile or something first, then denim. I’ll just build new cabinets before I do that. It’s...
Re: JBL 3677
Both done. Sounds better overall, makes you sing more. Reveals more character in some stuff for sure. Piano is much better. This is not a shock, the insulation in it before was so thin it probably didn't do anything at all except annoy me when taking it out. (It wasn't that hard to do, just had to b...
Re: JBL 3677
Ok so I've done one speaker with R13 denim insulation. The improvements are very good. I'm recording before and after. Hard to say how obvious it'll be, but in person it's obvious. On a single speaker it has more bass, clearer, and less forward harshness.
Re: JBL 3677
I don't understand that topic, at all. People talking about stuff I don't know how they got to or context.
iPhone sounds horrrrrid. I've tried many times. Many friends say same thing. But newer Samsungs work better. (I have an older one that makes marginally better videos that new iPhone)

Re: JBL 3677
It's a bit late now for a YouTube video. Maybe I'll try that if I get into something more extensive. (My phone is pretty bad quality though, iPhone's audio is BAD) For soldering I use Kester 44 63/37. My station is an old Weller that won't quit! There's plenty better like MetCal ($500+). I recommend...
Re: JBL 3677
Tinned copper inside speakers always sounds more musical to me. It has tone and scaling. Copper without might have more introspective but it certainly isn't in tune for me. The twisting I might play with. But I can say most the time it doesn't do much either way when I've played with it for speakers...
Re: JBL 3677
While the box is braced ok, I'm thinking from what I've read a bit of better insulation inside is advisable. I'm going to see if I can locate some denim insulation that I don't have to buy a pallets worth to get... And then look at the back of the horn to see if I can use non-hardening clay to cut a...
Re: JBL 3677
I replaced series resistors with the MOX resistors. When I looked closer at the wiring I noticed it was tinned copper so I just twisted it and put some heatshrink towards the end to make it manageable. I cannot see any reason to replace the speaker wire, as tinned copper is perfect for the speaker. ...
