Re: LP12 - alternative plinths and top-plates

I did not care for the Khan nor the Karmen top plates. They gave an artificially detailed sound to the music while compressing the music, damaging the flow and not allowing you to hear as far into the mix. With the Khan I also found emphasized surface noise. The Karmen was better than the Khan but ...

Re: When is an LP12 not an LP12?

I have not heard the Stratos, nor its competitor the Stiletto. I have evaluated the Khan and Karmen top plates from the same companies and did not like either, but those are aluminum top plates that mate to a wood plinth, not a complete aluminum top plate/plinth combination. So you are talking abou...

Re: When is an LP12 not an LP12?

I'd be interested to hear your LP12, anachronid. Would you be willing to post some clips so that we can get an inkling of how it sounds? Hi tokenbrit I confess to being mystified by the technique of using clips recorded on iPhones etc to evaluate musicality, though I've read up on other threads (e....

Re: When is an LP12 not an LP12?

As far as I have seen, LP12 is marked and developed as a product from Linn Products. Either as Linn Sondek LP12 or only Linn LP12 and covers the turntable, usually including power supply. Arm and cartridge being separate. Hence, if a different top plate, bearing, PSU etc is used, it's not a LP12 - ...

Re: When is an LP12 not an LP12?

Very interesting as always Thomas. Following home demonstration (my 'LP12' built into a Tiger Paw Stratos) it didn't take long for me to decide to keep the machined aluminium plinth/top plate. To my ears, the Stratos facilitates increased detail, tunefulness, and musicality. ... I would say that the...

When is an LP12 not an LP12?

Or to put it another way, what makes an LP12 an LP12? What accounts for its distinctive sound? If the LP12 is more musical and plays tunes ‘better’ than some other turntables, why is this? Is the 'essence' of the LP12 the three-point spring suspension? Or this combined with the (slightly bent) stain...

Re: LP12 - alternative plinths and top-plates

The Tune Method typically stipulates something along the lines of: “Play component A while following or singing along to the main tune of the music; repeat the 10-20 seconds on component A (because it is usually is a little easier to follow the tune the second time you hear it); then play the 10-20 ...

In the early 2017, I was at my dealer and tried for a couple of hours my LP12 into a properly set entry level Exakt system (MDSM/2, MExaktbox-I and M140) and I was impressed but ... it was digital. A digitalized vinyl is not my cup of tea. M. That's fine, your choice. Before committing to Exakt, I ...

Re: Exakt vs. non-Exakt

The worst I have ever heard my LP12 in 34 years was when it was once played through an Exakt 350 system. Ron The Mon Needle-Freak I'm not surprised. I had a pair of 350Ps on home dem for a week when I had a passive system with Solos. Compared with my existing 242s, and the AkubarikPs I bought to re...

Re: LP12 - alternative plinths and top-plates

The Linn one piece aluminum top plate/plinth is a little more than rumored. Here is a photo that used to reside on the 4c Design website where they talked about helping Linn prototype products for the Special Edition LP12. It looks like Linn had them take the original post down and now talks about ...

Re: LP12 - alternative plinths and top-plates

In all cases bar one, the result to my ears has been a loss of musicality compared to the standard LP12. And the one where I got an improvement in tunedem/musical understanding? That's the Booplinth. Have you heard Tiger Paw Stratos, or Tangerine Audio Stiletto/Skorpion? These integrated plinth/top...

Thanks Thomas OK for this information, and for the link to the earlier discussion. LP12 - alternative plinths and top-plates

There is now a bewildering variety of third-party alternatives to the standard LP12 wooden plinth and stainless steel top-plate. For the plinth there are different materials (types of wood, or alternatives to wood such as bamboo or aluminium), and different methods of construction (‘picture frame’ j...

Re: Linn announcements 9/2018, Selekt, etc.

Music Lover is correct, the Tune Method is an objective method and David Neel summarised it well (evaluate objectively, enjoy subjectively). The Tune Method is mandatory on this forum and I will not allow any debate about that fact - we've been there many times before and it leads nowhere. Except t...

Re: Linn announcements 9/2018, Selekt, etc.

Not quite. You should compare these systems with each-other. 1/ the system with SO active 2/ the system with SO off, AND the system perfectly tuned Comparing a system with SO off, WITHOUT tuning the system to perfection is pointless. You need to compare both options at their best. SO assumes that t...

Re: Linn announcements 9/2018, Selekt, etc.

it was markedly more musical (wider soundstage, more engaging mids, less muddy bass) I say there is no correlation between the sound being more clear/less muddy and the reproduction being more musical. In fairness to Timster, I don’t think he’s saying his system is more musical because of the wider...

Hi There's also no bass or treble shelf option, so for those 'in-Exakt' users who use that in the current SO (which I do in my bedroom system to good effect; I use a 1 dB bass shelf and a 1 dB lower sub setting to help better integrate it with my 212s) it might be worth holding off until these feat...

Re: Linn announcements 9/2018, Selekt, etc.

On every system I've come across, and there's been a few, it's sounded more musical when SO was turned off. +1 SO is like telling the musicians playing in a room to play differently. Matt If the room the musicians are playing in has poor acoustics (and I’ve heard a few) then telling them to play di...
