Re: Subwoofer

I can concur that trying to add subs to quality speakers is very tricky. Even expensive subs I tried (which I still have - use for for movies) with my Linn 350s added some extra dimension but also took something away from the finesse of the sound. It's all about timing I concluded and the difference...

Linn AV5125 Repair

Does anyone know someone who repairs older Linn amps in UK, preferably local - I am in the W.Midlands. It is an AV 5125 and I reckon needs the dynamik power supply re-capped. Unfortunately I bought second hand from a HiFi retailer (so thought I had some safety, but after months of back and forth ema...

Re: Understanding what a good rack needs to deliver

Thanks for that. I have suspended timber floors. They were providing their own backing singers. I put concrete slab under the rack & speakers and found that an improvement, stopping some of the vibrations to/ from the timber floors. Putting a mass as per the diagram above would not have helped with ...

Re: Understanding what a good rack needs to deliver

I don't understand

'placing a bigger mass on the ground in between the feets/spikes of the rack. So the rack still stands on the ground and not on the big mass'

can you explain in more detail.

Re: Understanding what a good rack needs to deliver

Hi Defender, I have done a lot of soul searching with racks recently so... 1. yes its both things. I can also add the following - make it easier to get to the back of equipment if you need to move things or change cables - give some air flow & space around each component - least important but if you...

Quite an unfathomable area!
I think a lot of things like this only come from trying it and seeing what sounds best.

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

Beck, I think you have slightly misunderstood, I was referring to mentally relaxing when listening to music rather than thinking about improvements or 'I still need to swap that cable' outstanding type of things. I am not meaning at the expense of musicality or enjoying the music. I still want the b...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

I agree that it is easier to achieve with simpler systems. I think that is because you have lower expectations and you are not trying to make it a journey of HiFi nirvana, so when you put it on you are pleased just to listen to good music played well by a decent enough system. I know if I had Exakt ...

Re: Unequal lengths of RCA OR Speaker Cable, Left & Right? Advice..

Thanks for the advice. I will make equal length 8m interconnects. Speaker cable not too short either. Got it. As an aside I would love to know (scientifically) why short speaker cable sounds worse. Logically I would think shorter cables means less signal degradation opportunity. Just curious, not di...

Re: Unequal lengths of RCA OR Speaker Cable, Left & Right? Advice..

Frederik, really you have answered the question about speaker cable.

Really the only question is 'is 8m equal length interconnect left & right with 4m of the right 8m just coiled up, better than 8m right & 4m length interconnect" ?

Cheers.

Re: Unequal lengths of RCA OR Speaker Cable, Left & Right? Advice..

Hi Frederik, No & sorry if my subject is confusing. I am asking really how important it is that a) an interconnect is equal length - considering 4m will be coiled up on the left channel compared to the right channel if I make them equal of 8m I am then asking the same question about speaker cable B)...

Re: Random thoughts on hifi

I think that is great that Beck & U252 are in that happy place. I find when I listen in the car or on a system I have put together from spare Hifi (ok its still decent hifi, 5125 amps type of thing, Kabers), I think mentally I switch off better because you are not thinking 'how can that be improved'...

Re: Unequal lengths of RCA OR Speaker Cable, Left & Right? Advice..

Thanks for your thoughts. I did have a read of 'optimal length of speaker cable ' thread first, but didn't think it helped on the particular issue I have noted. If I could have all cables at 2.48m it would make life simpler :)

Anyone have any other thoughts? or experience?

Unequal lengths of RCA OR Speaker Cable, Left & Right? Advice..

Does anyone have any experience on the below 2 scenerios - similar or same issues I would think. I know the answer seems obvious - of course have the same length cable...but... 1) AV processor connecting to 2 subs . The processor (pre-amp) is in 1 corner of the room. Length required to Sub 1 is 4m &...

Re: LINN Classik K - CD Engine & DAC Quality

If you can find an Akurate CD player & fits budget - get it they are really good, in linn line up only the CD12 is better.

Re: LINN Classik K - CD Engine & DAC Quality

The Ikemi is something special. It sounds very good, but I really like them I think because of its design and build. By that it is subjective, when you just like a favourite car, not because it make perfect sense. But in the linn family, the Unidisc 1.1 sounds better (clearly noticeable) and is not ...

Re: Wall mounting a AV centre speaker - Linn 225

Thanks Thomas. I could not find any pictures of the back of the 225 either. It does need 2 Brakits, Linn confirmed that.
I've ordered 2 brakits. I will have to test that it will fit, now that I know there are 2 versions of the brakit!

Re: Wall mounting a AV centre speaker - Linn 225

In case, this helps someone else, I spoke to Linn and the 225 speaker has holes pre-drilled in it (back) & you screw 1 part of the bracket into the speaker with supplied screws. The other part of the bracket you drill into wall.

Re: Wall mounting a AV centre speaker - Linn 225

Thanks Tokenbrit & Thomas. I am so glad I asked the question. I actually had some brakits for some (not great) little Linn surround speakers years ago, but they went a long time ago. I am not at home now, so cannot see how the brakits fix to the 225 speaker. Does anyone know? Also how many will I ne...

Wall mounting a AV centre speaker - Linn 225

My Linn Akurate 225 centre speaker is H 250 x W 600 x D 300 mm & weighs 21kg. I will need to wall mount it soon. Any ideas what to place it on? Its on a wood cabinet at the moment, sitting on top of an isolation platform. I was thinking a turntable wall shelf. I have a Vulcan for my LP12, but I am n...
